What customers say

This is a popular site for wild camping, praised for its peaceful atmosphere, spacious pitches, and freedom to have campfires and BBQs. Guests highlight the friendly and welcoming owners, secure gated entry, and convenient location close to local amenities. While appreciated for its off-grid feel, some visitors note the basic facilities, including a single portaloo, and occasional issues with cleanliness around bins. The site is recommended for those seeking a relaxed, natural camping experience.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful site, very clean and tidy, the peacocks were a fantastic surprise in the morning. The communication with the hosts was absolutely incredible, and as a woman camping alone I felt very safe. Portaloo was much cleaner and well stocked than I anticipated. All in all, a really good nights stay ready for the GNR the following day.

Disliked N/A as it exceeded expectation

Liked Leaving

Disliked We arrived early but were allowed into the site,we pitched our tent and walked to the tap for making a brew, unfortunately no water in tap.My partner walked to the toilet but it wouldn't flush.
I wrote a text to the owner,i received a text telling me check in is at 1pm and who let us in.
I kept checking the tap but still no water, the owner said she would get her daughter to turn the water on,I checked again, still no water, the owner said her daughter had turned the wrong valve, still no water.
After several more texts she suggested we leave and receive a refund.
We were only too glad to take up this offer after the way she spoke to us.
I have sent screenshots of the text conversation to Pitch up.
Do yourselves a favour and find a friendly site.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The surrounding areas were beautiful. This was my first time away in my van and i was really stressed, but once i got myself sorted, i was calm and relaxed.
I would definetly go back. The walks are beautiful. Thank you so much.

Disliked Unfortunatley one of the owners was admitted to hospital. I am sending you a speedy recovery and get well soon. Hopefully next time, we will get to say hi. GET WELL SOON

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked The area is beautiful
I felt safe and secure travelling with my Grandaughter
The public walks could be better sign posted. It would have been nice to know if we could buy some fresh eggs and the toilet had seen better days
I would stay here again
Thank you

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely quiet place.

Disliked The portaloo had the worst smell ever and didn’t flush. Kids wouldn’t use it.

From the manager: Thank you for your review . Sorry the portaloo must have gone out of water but I did say text any worries at all and we would be straight there & could have filled the tank & cleaned

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked We came early so got a good pitch nice and flat and out the way really enjoyed our stay

Disliked Could of done with an extra toilet or 2

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you very much for your kind review . We would love to be able to afford 2 portaloo but it would make the wild camping field unviable to continue due to cost of professional servicing & hire. Hopefully one day we might expand & be great to offer proper toilet block

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The fact that is a wild camping site was perfect for me and my grandson, he had a great time helping me gather wood for a fire and helping with other tasks and for his 1st time camping he loved it

Disliked Cut wood for fires could be a bit smaller
We had an issue with noise from some older teenagers on site, messaged the site owner and the issue was sorted out very quickly 10 out of 10 and issue was NOT the fault in any way of the site owner and was delt with very promptly

From the manager: Thank you for your booking and your kind review . It’s very unfortunate the young people showed themselves up but we won’t tolerate this as we thankfully have such lovely people here. Their behaviour was very unfortunate and are now banned.
So glad your little guy had fun
Thanks x

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Quiet, plenty space. Forest full of wood that was cut for fire. Park anywhere u wish. I had the tenbox and a living tent next to us. Drinking water tap also onsite. Secure site with electric gate locked at night.

Disliked Only downside was the portaloo. It was clean when we arrived Tuesday afternoon. But by Wednesday morning it was very unhygienic. Was only 3 camper vans and 3 tents including us. Not sure if someone had a bad belly but it was me I would not have left it in such a mess…. If I comeback I will bring a portable folding toilet for the kids. Was the only downside but I suppose it’s basically wild camping

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you very much for your lovely review & booking. Unfortunately the portaloo is ongoing issue as it was professionally services on Tuesday & we clean it daily. Wild camping only needed one last year and they are a big expense too. I really appreciate your booking & glad you enjoyed the wood that was chopped x

Local attractions

What was life like in past times around here? Well, for a whizz back to the Roman era, Heddon-on-the-Wall (15 minutes’ drive) and Corbridge Roman Town (25 minutes) are both a short drive away, where you’ll get to see excavation collections, Roman armour and trinkets, as well as the remains of the 73-mile Roman wall. The 1820s to the 1950s are in focus at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (20 minutes). This place is an open-air museum, so you’ll get to join in with activities here or just have a look around. There are old colliery railway tracks for walking and cycling at Chopwell Woodland Park (10 minutes) but Go Ape Matfen takes things to the treetops (25 minutes) for more daring obstacle courses and zipwires. Water’s surely got to feature in your break too, as the coast is just over half an hour’s drive away. At Seaham beach (35 minutes), perhaps you’ll want to search for sea glass or pull out all the stops for a picnic on the shore, followed by a pretty promenade walk. Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) is another place that's all about the water, whether it’s fishing lessons, open-water swimming, sailing or windsurfing.
