Tents on The Went

General

  • Nearly-wild site on a smallholding next to the Trans Pennine Trail
  • A 20-minute drive to Hatfield Water Park; pub within walking distance
  • Animals to feed and firepit on site; fishing in the pond or river

The owners of Tent on The Went are keen wild campers, but they’re very aware that the remotest of reaches aren’t for everybody. That’s exactly why, after much consideration, they crafted a quiet tent camping stay at their quiet South Yorkshire smallholding for a small, like-minded crowd.

There sure is a huge amount of space to unwind in at Tents on The Went, with a riverbank running alongside the site, a large firepit and a pond. In the morning, the kids are very welcome to help with feeding the site’s flock of Silkie and Frizzle chickens, petting the goats or offering a carrot for horses like Peanut the pony to nibble on.

Fish may nibble upon your line here too, as guests with a rod licence can fish along the riverbank or the large pond (day licences can be booked online). Pike, chub, dace and the occasional barbel are the main occupants. Kids who aren’t too fussed about angling can also dip in the pond under adult supervision.

The remote, basic and stunning spot is set between two nature reserves, so wildlife and birds often make an appearance. Keep a lookout for resident kingfishers, deer (if you’re an early riser), the owl which hoots throughout the day or perhaps Bob the badger on the lane to the village pub, which is only 15 minutes’ walk away. Kristoff the cat sometimes chooses to make an appearance too.

The Trans Pennine Trail snaking its way past the site’s front door is just about the cherry on top. With traffic-free sections, it makes a lovely walk for pint-sized family members too. Petrol stations and shops are 15 minutes’ drive away.

Absolutely love this campsite, lovely location and love that it is more than just a field which so many campsites are now. The goats, chickens etc were a lovely touch and the toilets were super clean. You can hear lots of wildlife and see the stars.

A great price, and the lady who runs it is lovely and goes above and beyond, we would definitely recommend. She even rang us to check us in as we arrived pretty late, which was a lovely touch.

    Disliked:

The only thing we think could be improved is that there aren't any signs on the outer fence warning that it is electric. We didn't realise, and I touched it on the first night and thought it was a static shock, but our puppy ran into it the next day and cried out, at which point we inspected more carefully and realised it was indeed electric. No harm done but I can imagine that if a toddler ran into it and got shocked, parents might not be too happy. So not really a "dislike", maybe just an idea to get a sign on there to avoid any future disgruntled parents!

A really great secluded retreat ran by a lovely family. Plenty of plots to choose from with fire pits and wood available on site.

Loved the the shower and toilets and recycling/washing up area. All spotlessly maintained.

The horses along with the chickens 🐓 and goats 🐐enclosure was a massive hit with our boys. They’re still talking excitedly about feeding and walking the goats (which turned a few heads of the cyclists passing us on the Penine trail l! 😅)

    Disliked:

A fair few mosquitoes 🦟 but they didn’t spoil the fun or our enjoyment of the venue. All part of experiencing the great outdoors.

We visited with my husband and dog. It is a beautiful site and maybe because we went on weekdays or during school time, we had plenty of space - which was handy since our dog gets overexcited around other dogs.
My husband genuinely said 'best campsite ever'.

Both Craig and Claire were so lovely and welcoming. They know what one needs for a good camping experience.

There were some communal sinks to do the dishes. A shower, compost toilets. Let me add really nice clean compost toilets!!
It was just so peaceful and relaxing,we will definitely try to go back

Lovely area. Lots of space on the site. Really cute animals on site - especially the pygmy goats! The owner was really friendly and welcoming and showed us round the site.

    Disliked:

The price of this site doesn’t match the facilities (2 small unisex compost toilets and 1 small unisex shower) - for the same price elsewhere you get separate gender flushable toilet blocks and multiple showers. Beware of the mosquitoes !! Me and my partner are covered in bites despite using mosquito spray :( Also a little expensive to use their firepits/wood (£8 for approx 3 hour burning time of wood and £5 for the firepit).

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, it always good to hear both the good and the bad (we are always keen to improve anywhere in any way that we can).

We live in an area surrounded by rare birds as well as an abundance of other wildlife and are keen that our site is as "green" and environmentally friendly as possible in order to have a neglible impact on the area. Our shower in fact runs for the main part from our solar panels in order to again have as little an imprint as possible. It does state on our listing, and the photos that we have compost toilets. We are sorry that you had not realised this before you booked. We think that in terms of compost toilets that they above average, and all of our feedback to date had been positive.

With regards to the Mosquitoes, unfortunately due to the inclement weather we have had this summer the mosquitoes have been worse than normal in the whole area, and from what i have heard have been bad in a number of other parts of the UK also.

As for the firewood, we are sorry to hear that you feel that £8 per bundle is not good value. We had felt that we were pretty good value compared to most places.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards,

Claire & Craig

We spent a lovely few days camping at Tents on the Went. The site is nice and quiet with the pitches spread out either side of a pond so there's lots of space.

The campsite is on a farm with horses, chickens and goats. The owners and their family were really friendly and let our two young sons feed the chickens and goats.

We even booked to take three of the goats (Ivy, Maggie and Timmy) for a walk. It was only £5 per person which we thought was great value and our sons loved it.

Location wise the site was perfect. It's close to many walking trails, we took one towards Pollington and the canal. It was only a 5 minute walk to the local village pub, the Old George Inn, which had a Biker and BBQ night on when we went.

We also had fun doing a bit of fishing in the river and pond as well as playing cricket in the paddock field located alongside the tent pitches, so ideal for our sons to play in.

We had a lovely stay and would definitely visit again.

Local attractions

While the kids may have already gone pond dipping on the site, there’s plenty of extra space for rental watercrafts like kayaks, canoes or paddleboards at Hatfield Water Park (20 minutes’ drive) – or you may feel like a dip in the pool on the edge of the lake or a round of the aqua park’s inflatable course.

And you may have also spotted a fair bit of wildlife in and around the site already… but probably nothing quite as large as the animals of Yorkshire Wildlife Park (35 minutes), which include sea lions, tamarin monkeys and hyenas.

Life in the Victorian era is a far cry from the modern day, but one great way to get as close of a taste as possible is a visit to the Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (25 minutes). Kept in good order and hardly altered since the 1860s, the country house still looks rather like the original.
