General
- Nearly-wild site on a smallholding next to the Trans Pennine Trail
- A 20-minute drive to Hatfield Water Park; pub within walking distance
- Animals to feed and firepit on site; fishing in the pond or river
The owners of Tent on The Went are keen wild campers, but they’re very aware that the remotest of reaches aren’t for everybody. That’s exactly why, after much consideration, they crafted a quiet tent camping stay at their quiet South Yorkshire smallholding for a small, like-minded crowd.
There sure is a huge amount of space to unwind in at Tents on The Went, with a riverbank running alongside the site, a large firepit and a pond. In the morning, the kids are very welcome to help with feeding the site’s flock of Silkie and Frizzle chickens, petting the goats or offering a carrot for horses like Peanut the pony to nibble on.
Fish may nibble upon your line here too, as guests with a rod licence can fish along the riverbank or the large pond (day licences can be booked online). Pike, chub, dace and the occasional barbel are the main occupants. Kids who aren’t too fussed about angling can also dip in the pond under adult supervision.
The remote, basic and stunning spot is set between two nature reserves, so wildlife and birds often make an appearance. Keep a lookout for resident kingfishers, deer (if you’re an early riser), the owl which hoots throughout the day or perhaps Bob the badger on the lane to the village pub, which is only 15 minutes’ walk away. Kristoff the cat sometimes chooses to make an appearance too.
The Trans Pennine Trail snaking its way past the site’s front door is just about the cherry on top. With traffic-free sections, it makes a lovely walk for pint-sized family members too. Petrol stations and shops are 15 minutes’ drive away.

Lovely area. Lots of space on the site. Really cute …

Thank you for your feedback, it always good to hear both the good and the bad (we are always keen to improve anywhere in any way that we can). We live in an area surrounded by rare birds as well as an abundance of other wildlife and are keen that our site is as "green" and environmentally friendly as possible in order to have a neglible impact on the area. Our shower in fact runs for the main part from our solar panels in order to again have as little an imprint as possible. It does state on our listing, and the photos that we have compost toilets. We are sorry that you had not realised this before you booked. We think that in terms of compost toilets that they above average, and all of our feedback to date had been positive. With regards to the Mosquitoes, unfortunately due to the inclement weather we have had this summer the mosquitoes have been worse than normal in the whole area, and from what i have heard have been bad in a number of other parts of the UK also. As for the firewood, we are sorry to hear that you feel that £8 per bundle is not good value. We had felt that we were pretty good value compared to most places. Thank you again for your feedback. Kind regards, Claire & Craig |

Local attractions
While the kids may have already gone pond dipping on the site, there’s plenty of extra space for rental watercrafts like kayaks, canoes or paddleboards at Hatfield Water Park (20 minutes’ drive) – or you may feel like a dip in the pool on the edge of the lake or a round of the aqua park’s inflatable course.
And you may have also spotted a fair bit of wildlife in and around the site already… but probably nothing quite as large as the animals of Yorkshire Wildlife Park (35 minutes), which include sea lions, tamarin monkeys and hyenas.
Life in the Victorian era is a far cry from the modern day, but one great way to get as close of a taste as possible is a visit to the Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (25 minutes). Kept in good order and hardly altered since the 1860s, the country house still looks rather like the original.
