  • Family-friendly wild camping in the parish of Bradfield
  • Hilltop location with moorland views on the edge of the Peak District
  • Spacious grass pitches with stunning views
Set on the edge of the Peak District National Park, East Peak Campsite is a pop-up on the outskirts of the village of Dungworth in South Yorkshire. With spectacular views to moorland, the hilltop camping field is flat, peaceful and well away from the sound of traffic. It also catches any available sunshine right from sunrise through to sunset. This family-friendly, back-to-basics site has grass pitches (there are no electric hook-ups), a few event-style toilets and a drinking water tap on the camping field. From the pitches, you can soon be exploring the area on a network of footpaths leading through fields and woodland. While barbecues and firepits are allowed on the pitches, please make sure they’re raised off the ground to reduce the risk of fire spreading. There's also a strict no-music policy on site to keep things peaceful. East Peak Campsite is a handy base for road cyclists, with routes leading into the national park. Likewise, rock climbers looking for grit can easily access the East Peak crags – Agden Rocher crag is visible from the camping field, and popular climbing spots such as Rivelin, Bamford and Stanage are all within 20 minutes’ drive. If you’re backpacking or would rather abandon the car while you’re on site, it's handy that the local bus stop is 10 minutes’ walk away, with an hourly service. If you’ve got any questions about where to go and what to see, ask a member of staff – they’ll be happy to help in any way they can.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Last minute camping trip booked at 7:30pm- booked and was set up less than an hour later. Peaceful surroundings with great views! portoloo toilets (don’t let this put you off as they were the cleanest I’ve seen) buns for rubbish, & a tap for drinking water. Perfect for a quiet getaway with a really big open field, which we found it perfect for us with the kids to toast marshmallows and ride their bikes without being too close to neighbours.

Disliked: Not really a big dislike but we arrived in the dark and drove past the entrance the first time. It could do with a little light on the sign for the camp, once you’ve turned onto the track it is lit lovely with solar lights

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Patrick was amazing. So chilled. Messaged us before arrival telling us what to do when we get there. Easily contactable and approachable. The portaloos are the cleanest portaloos I've ever seen. Always cleaned daily. Toilet rolls supplied. Cleaning products available. Drinking water available. The views are fantastic. Cant wait to return next year.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Incredible views, portaloos cleaned regularly, huge area to pitch up with plenty of privacy

Disliked: Other campers can play loud music until late as quiet hours aren't enforced, which may bother some (but we didn't mind much)

From the manager: Hi, we are sorry for you experience. For 2024 we have decided to ban music altogether.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very large grassy field, with soft soil perfect for putting tent pegs in! Also very helpful being able to rock up late after long day climbing ;) Fantastic views and treat to hear alot of owl as well!

Disliked: Nothing really with the campsite itself! Unfortunately on the second night some ppl next to us were playing music late (was no where near as bad compared to last time I camped in Portland) I think well priced campsites like this one can attract all sorts, and to ensure no music players you have to go to a £20ppn campsite with super strict etiquettes (eg one I stayed at in Gower) that are way too costly if all you want to do is pitch a tent!

From the manager: Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us. but sorry about the late night music, for 2024 we have decided to ban music altogether. hopefully nothing to hear but the winds and the owls.

Flat, well-maintained, picturesque campsite.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful, flat and well-maintained campsite, easy to find and in a lovely location. It's just a 10-minute walk to Our Cow Molly, which does amazing ice creams and also has a refrigerated vending machine open from 8am-8pm that sells milk, bacon and more lovely fresh farm items. Toilets are basic portaloos but were clean and always had loo roll. The drinking water was clean and fresh.

Disliked: Being on a hilltop, the views are excellent but it's quite windy. But it's worth it for the lovely scenery.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful views

Disliked: The people in the tent next to me spent the night with the car engine on which somewhat disturbed the peace. This is obviously not a criticism of the campsite itself or the owner who apologised in the morning for their behaviour when he came around to collect the money

Local attractions

Taking life slowly? Stroll down into Dungworth village (five minutes’ walk) for a pint in the local pub, or treat the kids to an ice cream from Our Cow Molly, where you can also buy milk and eggs if you're running short of supplies. Bradfield village (10 minutes’ drive) has another inviting pub, a café/bistro and a lovely picnic spot by the river Loxley. Ease the kids gently into outdoor life with meanders around local reservoirs such as Damflask (five minutes) and Agden (10 minutes). Alternatively, get cracking on adrenaline-inducing activities straight away with off-road cycling adventures in the Peak District National Park (five minutes), or rock climbing on challenging crags such as Agden Rocher and Rivelin Edge (both 10 minutes). Spend the day in pretty Castleton village (25 minutes), touring the four show caves, climbing up to Peveril Castle (five minutes’ walk from the village) or wandering footpaths in the Hope Valley. For an urban trip out, have a potter around the vast Winter Garden glasshouse or tour the former foundry at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield (20 minutes’ drive).
