Elwick campsite

  • Wild camping on a peaceful working farm opposite Lindisfarne
  • Bamburgh Castle 10 minutes’ drive; Newcastle an hour
  • A five-minute drive from Ross Sands; dogs welcome; A1 two miles away
Sitting between the Northumberland Coast National Landscape and Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, Elwick Campsite rewards its guests with pretty spectacular views of this north-easternmost corner of England. Another benefit of staying at this back-to-basics site on a working farm is the easy access to an assortment of excellent activities: from trips to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, to visiting the castles that line the coast up to the Scottish border. And in between all that sightseeing, you can also, of course, explore the many secluded beaches in the local area. This laidback spot has a no-frills approach, but there are some well-maintained basic facilities, including portable toilets and a chemical waste disposal tank, plus running water. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (limited to two per pitch); however, since there is livestock and wildlife all around, it is essential that they are kept on a lead at all times. The farm is in an easily accessible location, about two miles from the A1 and the village of Belford (for a couple of pubs, a café, a small supermarket or a fish and chip shop). The nearest beach is in Ross, roughly five minutes away by car, followed by a lovely mile-long walk along a footpath.

What customers say

This peaceful campsite offers stunning views, particularly of Holy Island. Guests consistently praise the exceptionally large, well-spaced pitches and immaculately clean portaloos. Its rural location is ideal for exploring the Northumberland coast, though the lack of showers means it's best suited for short stays. Owners are frequently noted as friendly and helpful.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Quiet site, great views, easy check in / clear communication, clean facilities.

Disliked 3mile walk / drive to nearest shop. But that's nitpicking.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Exactly as I expected. It’s a basic campsite done very well. Great sized pitches and amazing views. We loved the wide open nature of the site and were treated to a wonderful sunset. Toilets were very clean and frequently checked in on by Susan who runs the site.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Disliked Could really do with some showers for those camping more than one night, but a dip in the sea at seahouses is a good back up option...very exhilarating

Local attractions

Imposing Bamburgh Castle (10 minutes’ drive) looms large over a wide sandy beach from its position atop a volcanic crag. In addition to a large collection of medieval weapons and armour, it houses a couple of museums: one displaying archaeological (mainly Anglo-Saxon) artefacts, the other with a focus on the history of aviation. On the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (20 minutes), which is accessible via a causeway only at low tide (be sure to time your return trip to the mainland just right), are the atmospheric ruins of Lindisfarne Priory. Also here is Lindisfarne Castle, which is not a fortress, but an Edwardian holiday home with the Gertrude Jekyll Garden. In Newcastle (an hour), the Discovery Museum is home to maritime displays including Turbinia, the very first boat powered by turbines. There are natural science and archaeological exhibits at the Great North Museum: Hancock, while nearby Exhibition Park has play areas and duck ponds.
