General

  • Dog-friendly park with direct access to Kielder Forest and Pennine Way
  • Many animals to meet on site
  • Modern and well-kept amenities with free hot water

If you have a canine adventurer, prepare to bring them here. A barkingly high amount of woofsome walkies are available in the area surrounding Otterburn's dog-friendly Border Forest Caravan Park, for it has direct access from its bridge over the barn to the mighty Kielder Forest and the Pennine Way. Collar a stay here forthwith.

As you might reckon from a park so firmly animal friendly, quite a menagerie is on site too: come here to meet the three Kunekune pigs Rita, Bubble and Squeak; Bertie the Labradoodle and Marmite the Giant Schnauzer; Shetland ponies Ant and Dec (they're quite tiny); Dakota the donkey, and Blanche and her chick friends.

And as you also might reckon from all this, its location and its amicable, quiet and family-friendly feel, Border Forest Caravan Park is a popular place for Northumberland stays... Its amenities are cleanly kept and include modern ladies' and gents' showers with free hot water, and toilets, washing-up facilities and a fridge in the park's centre.

As Border Forest is a quiet park, there's no shop or club on site, but a small supermarket is a short drive away. Local village Otterburn has a café, pubs, shops and a tourist information centre.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

We are a very quiet family-run park - there is no shop or club on site.

No single-sex parties or under 25s accepted via Pitchup.com.

Good Location, could do with updated facilities 26/07/2017

Fantastic location on the edge of the forest not far from the Scottish border. Lovely walks and great for the dogs.

    Disliked:

The toilets could do with updating, just one block in the middle of the site and no lights through the day, full of cobwebs. Showers are right at the top of the site, wet room but limited space to hang dry clothes. Facilities ok but dated and needs a spruce up.

Toilets and showers would benefit from a little modernisation but kept very clean.

    Situation nice.

    Disliked:

Having to share toilet block with men. No mosquito or midge screen on the only window so chose to swelter rather than get bitten. Pod door needs a hook and chain in the wind as it nearly chopped my dog in two when coming out unexpectedly. Pod too expensive for facilities offered so won't be returning. Also noisy as lawn mower going on both days there so had to go to Jedburgh to get away from noise.

From the manager...

Hello
We are very sorry that you found your stay here so 'disappointing' in spite of all our other lovely reviews.
Having read your overall view of us it is clear that the park is obviously not for you .
We will look into the pod door but this has never been an issue before
BUT ........
You do not have to share the toilets with men anymore than men have to share toilets with women as there are seperate male and female toilets and showers at the top of the park, just 2 minutes from the pods.
( The unisex toilets are for convenience ). Yes we get midges at certain times of the year. Yes we do mow the grass as we governed by weather and the fact that grass grows but it is not all day and not weekends. You may well have heard one of the cottages mowing their lawn on Sunday (nothing to do with us) .There is a whole forest directly from our park that you could happily have walked in to get 'away from the lawn mowing noise'. We are not sure what facilites you were expecting as we make it clear we have no bar, shop or restaurant here but we're so glad you liked the 'situation', we think you mean the location, as it is very lovely :)

Absolutely loved every aspect of our stay in a wooden pod! One of the friendliest sites we have visited, immaculately clean toilets and wonderful woodlands walks for our dog.
Can't wait to return - thank you!

Location perfect. Great access to walks and cycling. Fantastic views, bagged the best pitch #7 looked straight onto the river, watched birds feeding for hours. Showers piping hot. Peaceful and rural.

    Disliked:

Nothing worth writing about. Minor issues such as a walk to the shower block but only a short walk mind you.

Directions

From Newcastle head towards Newcastle Airport on A696, following directions to Jedburgh all the time (the A696 becomes the A68). Pass through Otterburn and the small hamlet of Rochester, and Border Forest is four miles further on the left hand side, 300 yards after Forest Drive.

From Scotland we are five miles south of the border on the A68 on the right-hand side, one mile after Byrness Village.

Local attractions

Kielder Forest is indeed mighty: this is the biggest human-made woodland in England and covers 250 acres. Roe deer roam here, many an archaeological feature and Site of Special Scientific Interest can be found, and the forest is also home to Kielder Castle, piles of walking and cycling trails, and Kielder Observatory (this is top stargazing territory too).

Also in the forest, hop along to the reservoir Kielder Water and Leaplish Waterside Park to hire fishing and pleasure boats, hide in the red squirrel hide, walk on water or try other activities like archery, crossbows, sea scooters or gymnastics.

Within an hour's drive of the site are famed Northumberland and Scottish Borders attractions like the budget-friendly Jedforest farm and animal park with native and exotic species and Mary Queen of Scots' House, both at Jedburgh; Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall (both also rather mighty); nineteenth century Cragside House, and the first-class Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast. Clay pigeon shooting is also available locally.
