  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome as well. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

This is a friendly campsite with well-maintained, spacious pitches offering electric and water. The on-site pub receives consistent praise for its excellent food and atmosphere, with staff described as welcoming and helpful. While most guests enjoyed their stay, some noted that toilet and shower facilities are dated and could benefit from refurbishment. Train noise is present but generally not an issue overnight. The location is considered ideal for exploring the Northumberland coast.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Site could be lovely as a great location.

Disliked The toilet/ shower block was absolutely disgusting. THE dirtiest I’ve ever seen.
The pub toilets also filthy.
The owner was miserable. What a rip off.
Shame because it could be such a lovely site if someone cleaned it. We chose this site with a pub as we wanted to eat there but after seeing the facilities we didn’t bother.
Massively overpriced for such a disgusting site.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked Poor dirty facilities, no arrival welcome had to call 3 numbers before getting a response. Whole site looked uncared for and unwelcoming. Didn't use showers or toilets as dirty and tired. Not worth the pitch fee.

From the manager: I just think your a weirdo , taking a camera into a toilet block , what did you want to take photos of , the outside sink is turned off because it has been winter, , Sorry there was no banners or brass bands on arrival, didn’t know you was royalty , Don’t come back toilet weirdo

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Big pitches, big enough for my LMC and awning. The onsite pub/restaurant is fantastic with live music on the weekend. Kick off the pitch was 11am on the sunday but because we booked sunday lunch there we were able to stay on the pitch until we had finished dinner.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
