  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome as well. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

This campsite offers friendly staff, spacious and level pitches, and convenient access. The on-site pub is frequently praised for its delicious and well-priced food and welcoming atmosphere. While some visitors noted train noise and basic or dated toilet/shower facilities, many found the campsite a great base for exploring the area and would recommend it for its value and accommodating hosts.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Easy so access, the site pitches are level & spacious. I would recommend carrying the tap screw on fitting for your hose as none on taps.
The pub isn't open mon & tues but when open the food is delicious, we'll priced & plentiful.
The site is just outside the village, Amble & Wirksworth both easy driving distance with Amble being my favourite & very dog friendly.
The station is immediately the otherside of the boundary so trains running through frequently should be taken into consideration if a light sleeper.

Disliked The only real niggle on arrival was that we couldn't contact anyone initially (the pub was closed & not answering the phone) which is a bit off putting when you arrive for a prepaid booking but all ended well eventually.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Perfect location as were visiting friends nearby
The pub was closed 2 of the days we stayed(which we were aware of)
And was also told by the lady who showed us to our pitch, -
we didn’t visit the pub , but only as were out with our friends or we would have done and will in our next stay
We use our own facilities in MH so cannot comment on the site facilities
There was noise from the passing trains ,as we had previously read on reviews,
but that didn’t bother us, nor did it keep us awake or wake up up in the mornings

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
