• Dog-friendly Northumberland site with dark skies and great views
  • A 15-minute drive to Hexham, Corbridge and Hadrian's Wall
  • Back to basics pitches with easy access from the A68
If you’re all about the simple pleasures of life – country walks, wildlife spotting, sunset chasing and stargazing in particular – then it’s likely you’ll be most happy with your lot at Well House Farm, a dog-friendly site in the Northumberland countryside about 15 minutes’ drive from Hexham. Pitches here have been set up in a lovely meadow with views out over the surrounding valley, and they’re often treated to some splendid sunsets. This is a dark-sky area, so you can expect great views overhead by night as well (clouds permitting). Keeping things simple is the ethos on the facilities front too: with views this good all you need is a portable toilet (thus keeping the environmental footprint down as well). Beyond that, anything else you need/want you’ll have to bring along for yourself – barbecues are permitted here, so stock up on all the bits at a local farm shop (there’s a good one by the A69 15 minutes’ drive away) and get set for an outdoor feast as the sun goes down. Time spent on site can be fruitfully spent simply in enjoying the views or watching the wildlife scuttle around, but this is also a great location for getting out and about – it’s close to Hadrian’s Wall for history-themed days out, Northumberland National Park for long walks and Newcastle for city days. Getting out and about to any and all of these should be straightforward thanks to a handy location just a little way from the A68.

Local attractions

Head out in search of Roman history with a walk by Hadrian’s Wall, perhaps taking in some of its major sights along the way – Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort are both about 20 minutes’ drive away, for example, and Corbridge Roman Town is about 15 minutes away. Sample a different side of history with outings to National Trust properties at Wallington (15 minutes’ drive), Gibside (40 minutes) and Cragside (40 minutes), or grab your broomstick and head off in search of Harry Potter locations at Alnwick Castle (50 minutes). If you’d rather stick to the outdoor pursuits there’s plenty of walking to be done nearby, in the Northumberland National Park, Simonside Hills and North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there’s a Go Ape park 15 minutes away for treetop adventures and axe throwing. Meanwhile, if city lights beckon it’ll take you about half an hour to drive to Newcastle upon Tyne to see the Tyne Bridge, the Sage Gateshead and great museums like the BALTIC contemporary art collection.
