  • Berwickshire caravan park in the grounds of 18th-century Paxton House
  • A 10-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed beaches, ruins and boat trips
  • Woodland walks, adventure playground, Tweed river trips from the site
Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead. Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two. For practical things like pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, ruins, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away.

What customers say

This immaculately kept, peaceful site within a beautiful walled garden offers spacious pitches and free access to Paxton House grounds. Guests praise the tranquility, abundant walks, and convenient location near Berwick. While many facilities are excellent, some reviewers note the toilet and shower block is limited, particularly when busy. Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Really a very nice site with lovely grounds and walks

Disliked Really needs to be more disciplined, ie people were still on site long after the time to leave and no one enforces the time limit on noise etc. rules are there for a reason and on this site no one cares

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked It was an excellent stay , beautiful and peaceful, lovely walks in the woods and around the house , was a bit worried on booking as I hadn’t noticed it had no showers or toilets as my e mail had said , but on arrival a sigh of relief as there was a couple of showers and toilets for our use and were so clean and plenty of space in them

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked We’ve stayed at Paxton House a number of times, our daughter lives in Berwick and so this is a good base for when we visit. The site is quiet unless there’s a function on as there was in Saturday evening and then you can hear the music very clearly until about midnight. Easy to fill your water on your motorhome and also to get rid of your grey water.

Disliked Although they don’t actively advertise the fact there are toilets and showers, there are two wet rooms, however there is not enough of them for the size of the site and I think this is why they say there are none. I know this has been mentioned in lots of other reviews but the facilities could be better with a few tweaks, such as a duck board so that you can get dried without standing in a pool of water and also either a mop and bucket or floor squeegee for cleaning up after yourself once you’re done. The floor around the drain in the one I used at weekend is collapsing and the heater did not work. I also think the site is overpriced for the facilities which are available and the 10am checkout is rubbish (especially if you’re not getting to sleep until after 12). Most of the other sites we’ve stayed on, checkout times are 11am.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely campsite in a spacious walled garden setting, large pitches, access to Paxton Hall grounds and great walks both through the grounds and beyond. Excellent pub 10-15 minutes walk with really good food and local cafes. 2 good toilet/shower rooms which were kept clean. Good refuse disposal area with recycling and easy to access motorhome service point. Easy to get to from A1 and close to Berwick if you need supplies.

Disliked No staff evident on the actual caravan site site, no check-in instructions (basically you find a pitch then go to reception area at the main house and tell them you’ve arrive which is fine but it would have been nice to know that)
The noise from the wedding at the weekend was very loud until midnight ( we were forewarned of possible noise so not complaining) but if you want peace avoid Saturdays. Only minor niggles and didn’t detract from our stay.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Very quiet, and dark at night. Being able to walk around the grounds, which is full of wildlife. We even saw a few deer early one morning.

Disliked We paid for a guided tour of the house, but wasn't impressed. It went on a bit too long (75 minutes). We were also less than impressed with the Stables Tearoom. We tried it on 2 separate occasions, and both times we felt very disappointed with the service.

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne half an hour's drive away will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and round make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route. There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors, is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with chances to go rockpooling and paddleboarding, plus coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle. Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths around Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
