  • Berwickshire caravan park in the grounds of 18th-century Paxton House
  • A 10-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed beaches, castle and boat trips
  • Woodland walks, adventure playground, Tweed river trips from the site
Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead. Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two. For practical things likes pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away. It’s also got a top castle, and a hefty handful of medieval forts and towers… and you can take a horseback ride down the beach like some country squire with a walled garden…

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely little site. Well laid out with good sized pitches. Very quiet in site in beautiful surroundings. Great to have a small toilet block as we prefer to use site facilities rather than our on board facilities.

Disliked: Some of the pitches were rather uneven.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Well spaced site in walled garden. Was quite quiet during our stay as all pitches weren’t full. Paxton House grounds to walk round and house tour worth doing.

Disliked: Could do with another grey water emptying point.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Great little site. 2 good toilets and showers. Loads to do in and around the area. Plenty walks around the estate. The Cross pub in Paxton was good for Dinner just a short walk. We only had tea and cake in the cafe at the site but bit was very good.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but the pitches could be slightly wider. Only because the weather was bad and the grass can get muddy.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Grounds are amazing, walk by the river on to the chain bridge, close to Berwick and Lindisfarne, Alnwick etc, Fab cafe at big house, scones and cakes lunch and breakfast yummy. Loos and showers are a great addition, not sure if they would cope in busy season though.

Disliked: Basically just the mud. I love this site, but when it has been raining , it doesnt take long for the grass between the hardstanding to become a mud pile. Not brilliant if you have an awning up. Hardstanding is perfect, well drained and flat as a board with easy access to electricity and Water. It's just the mud! So it is perfect except if you need the awning up on the grass during the rainy season!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Excellent location in the walled garden.

Disliked: Slight issue with pegging the awning. The pegs wouldn't hold on the hard standing. Possibly the wet conditions contributed to this.

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne half an hour's drive away will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and round make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route. There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors, is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with chances to go rockpooling and paddleboarding, plus coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle. Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths round Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
