Paxton House Caravan Park: Adventure playground

General

  • Berwickshire caravan park in the grounds of 18th-century Paxton House
  • A 10-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed beaches, castle and boat trips
  • Woodland walks, adventure playground, Tweed river trips from the site

Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead.

Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two.

For practical things likes pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away. It’s also got a top castle, and a hefty handful of medieval forts and towers… and you can take a horseback ride down the beach like some country squire with a walled garden…

The location has it all going for a great place to stay and in dry summer months i would say that the current set up is adequate but not fantastic.

This site has great potential and requires some level of investment to enhance the infrastructure to make the stay more enjoyable and easier.

    Disliked:

The lack of care and attention to a number of things leaves it wanting in many ways.

The pitches are very narrow with grass leading to them and if you going to be open all year round you have to cater for the seasonal changes in weather.

We just love this place, even in late December. It's a little place of heaven, quiet, relaxing and set in beautiful grounds.
Of course it has no toilet facilities, but you get to use your caravan for what it's for. Unfortunately due to Storm Arwen, the grounds were closed off (sad to see so many old trees fallen), but it was still beautiful.

We were lucky to be the only occupants the first day and had the pick of the pitches, there is only one that is fully hard pitch to the road. The problem was that for all the others you have to drive over the grass and it was water logged and unfortunately 2 campervans (that arrived the day after) got stuck in the mud on leaving. However, the staff at Paxton House were really helpful, and a team effort from all of the caravaners got them out and on their way.

The facilities are basic but good. Fresh water by the entrance and grey water disposal and toilet disposal next to the bins on the otherside of the entrance. All perfectly functionable.

We had a wonderful 3 days. It's our 3rd time here, but 1st time in winter. Think I'd wait to see what the weather has been doing before I go back in winter. However, looking forward to going back in the spring and summer.

Really handy for quick trips to Berwick and the Morrisons is only 5 minutes away.
Lovely pub -The Cross- in Paxton village. Little 10 minute walk away and well worth it, great food.

    Disliked:

In winter and if the ground is water logged getting to the hard ground pitches requires manouevering over the grass, which for most pitches is asking for trouble, especially if you have a heavy campervan or caravan. You definitely need a 4X4 or AWD. If your Campervan is front wheel drive, I'd bring some wheel runs and lay them across the grass to drive on.

Tranquility, good walking area, would have included the grounds if not for Storm Arwen which has felled some trees.
    Good sized pitches

    Disliked:

This isn’t a dislike. Because we were there after a great deal of rain, some of those of us who went on a pitch had difficulty getting off. It would be good if the hard standing of the pitches was extended to the hard standing.

The area for positioning the caravan on ( hard standing) was quite away from the road and completely sodden turning to deep mud which created issues with parking and leaving,I had to tow my caravan out using a tow rope.

First time adventure in our new to us caravan. The site was clean and tidy and we were thankful for the walled setting as storm Arwen caused havoc across the country during our stay. Never really had time to explore the grounds before the high winds hit. Definitely want to return in the spring season.

We Did not use our booking for the one night that I had booked due to the fact recent reviews put me off, the weather was not good and people saying you have to drive over grass to get to the hardstandings really did put me off!

Our motorhome is 3.5 ton also I tow a small car in total the weight is around 4.5 ton (I appreciate i can unhitch the car prior to trying to get to the pitch) I booked another site which was excellant and we had no problems even though there was ice and snow.

Paxton House may well be ok but given my wife has Terminal cancer IU did not want to risk any problems at all so just took the financial hit on the booking!

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne half an hour's drive away will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and round make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route.

There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with opps for rockpooling and paddleboarding, coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle.

Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths round Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
