  • Dog-friendly Northumberland farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Alnwick
  • A 20-minute drive to Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle on the coast
  • Pub five minutes’ drive away; dark skies with views of the Milky Way
It’s no secret that Northumberland has a stunning coastline and lush green countryside, but fewer have been introduced to the dramatic evening skies and rural views of Shipley Lane Camping and Caravanning. At night, the Milky Way can often be spotted up in the dark sky – and when the sun’s still high in the sky, views over the Cheviot hills make up the green screen. From the well-maintained touring pitches (which all have electric hook-up and water and waste points) it's easy to explore the Northumberland coast and its beaches – Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnmouth are only 20 minutes’ drive away. The Northumberland Coast Path is splendid for a day of hiking and birdwatching, with the hilly trails of the Northumberland National Park about 25 minutes’ drive away. Those big names live up to their reputation, but local spots like the pub in the village of Eglingham (five minutes’ drive away) are just as lovely. Seek out a page-turner in the famed bookstore of Alnwick, 10 minutes’ drive away, too. If the scene sounds like something out of the Harry Potter wizarding world, you’re not far wrong; the town's castle is one of the series’ filming locations. The Alnwick Garden is mightily peaceful too, with 4000 different plants to spot as you stroll. Dogs are welcome on site as long as they get on with the resident dogs. The site’s border collies greet owner Robert with great excitement when he releases them from their kennels to help out on the livestock farm. Meanwhile, Timmy, who is now retired, likes to lie outside the house and keep an eye on things. The farm dogs take their duties seriously, so you may well hear a bit of barking at night.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful scenery. Laid back atmosphere and dog friendly. Owners very friendly and welcoming

Disliked: Portaloo was disgusting at times even though the owner cleaned it regularly. Not enough facilities for the amount of people there.

From the manager: Very sad to see you wouldn’t return. The additional toilet is back now after a mixup with the hire company. I did explain this at the time, however I didn’t think it would be an issue with you having your own toilet in your caravan. Thanks for staying.

Excellent campsite location. Clean facilities. Helpful staff.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely rural scenery made it a joy to wake up in the morning and sit in the sun looking out at the views. Excellent location, being a short drive into Alnwick was very convenient for buying food and drink. Only a half hour drive to the coast allowed us plenty of time to relax and enjoy our stay on the beach and in the campsite. The information provided prior to arrival was clear and helpful. Access to drinking water was a massive positive. Everything felt tidy and well looked after.

Disliked: Perhaps a second portaloo facility but no complaints otherwise.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Had a good choice if pitch and it was easy to get hooked up with a short cable. Got to be happy with the various wildlife sounds overnight. Bins, chemical waste disposal and porta loo provided, all fine for us.

Disliked: Public transport is non existant so if you want to travel away from this site to Alnwick, for example, then you would need to drive or risk a dangerous 5 mile walk.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We stayed here one night, then decided to stay the night after too. Nice campsite on a working farm with lots of space and basically pitch where you like in the non electric field. Only portaloos there, but that's all you need really. No reception or anything, just leave your money in a box with your details, but there's a number to ring as well. A nice little campsite, would definitely return.

Local attractions

Which way, captain? That’s what the kids might ask – and your answer may very well be the medieval hilltop fortress of Warkworth Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where the Duke of Northumberland once lived, or the 14th-century Dunstanburgh Castle (20 minutes). For good views, head to the Holy Island (40 minutes), a tidal island with an ancient priory. Northumberland National Park's Upper Coquet Valley surrounding the River Coquet (half an hour) is a dream for walks or bike rides, and the same can be said of Breamish Valley’s prehistoric hill forts (around 15 minutes). Further afield, the Kielder Observatory (an hour and a half) may be worth the journey for keen stargazers. Scottish border towns like Kelso (50 minutes) and Hadrian's Wall (50 minutes’ drive) are also within reach.
