  • Dog-friendly Northumberland farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Alnwick
  • A 20-minute drive to Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle on the coast
  • Pub five minutes’ drive away; dark skies with views of the Milky Way
It’s no secret that Northumberland has a stunning coastline and lush green countryside, but fewer have been introduced to the dramatic evening skies and rural views of Shipley Lane Camping and Caravanning. At night, the Milky Way can often be spotted up in the dark sky – and when the sun’s still high in the sky, views over the Cheviot hills make up the green screen. From the well-maintained touring pitches (which all have electric hook-up and water and waste points) it's easy to explore the Northumberland coast and its beaches – Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnmouth are only 20 minutes’ drive away. The Northumberland Coast Path is splendid for a day of hiking and birdwatching, with the hilly trails of the Northumberland National Park about 25 minutes’ drive away. Those big names live up to their reputation, but local spots like the pub in the village of Eglingham (five minutes’ drive away) are just as lovely. Seek out a page-turner in the famed bookstore of Alnwick, 10 minutes’ drive away, too. If the scene sounds like something out of the Harry Potter wizarding world, you’re not far wrong; the town's castle is one of the series’ filming locations. The Alnwick Garden is mightily peaceful too, with 4000 different plants to spot as you stroll. Dogs are welcome on site as long as they get on with the resident dogs. The site’s border collies greet owner Robert with great excitement when he releases them from their kennels to help out on the livestock farm. Meanwhile, Timmy, who is now retired, likes to lie outside the house and keep an eye on things. The farm dogs take their duties seriously, so you may well hear a bit of barking at night.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful location. Morning greeting from the bullocks in the next field. Wildlife in the area, hares, pheasant, barn owls etc. Water available at the site hook up ,very convenient.

Disliked: Boggy, unlevel pitches ,no lighting (arrived in darkness and torrential rain and rain every day , so perhaps we didn't see the site at it's best.) Bins overflowing and zero contact from the site owners .We understood that they were busy with a new baby but a text or phonecall to check that all was well during atrocious weather conditions would have been nice.

From the manager: Hi Thanks for staying with us. I had sent numerous messages saying get in touch if you had any questions or issues. I had just had surgery so wasn't on site. The site is big and there was only 2 vans staying so there was ample space to have a level pitch and as much space as you needed. IThanks

Fantastic site. Would stay again!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Easy to find and access. Communication prior to stay from the owner was great. Reasonably level site for a non hardstanding pitch. Remote and quiet location with fantastic countryside views. Central to a few places for visiting and days out.

Local attractions

Which way, captain? That’s what the kids might ask – and your answer may very well be the medieval hilltop fortress of Warkworth Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where the Duke of Northumberland once lived, or the 14th-century Dunstanburgh Castle (20 minutes). For good views, head to the Holy Island (40 minutes), a tidal island with an ancient priory. Northumberland National Park's Upper Coquet Valley surrounding the River Coquet (half an hour) is a dream for walks or bike rides, and the same can be said of Breamish Valley’s prehistoric hill forts (around 15 minutes). Further afield, the Kielder Observatory (an hour and a half) may be worth the journey for keen stargazers. Scottish border towns like Kelso (50 minutes) and Hadrian's Wall (50 minutes’ drive) are also within reach.
