Views of the countryside

  • Dog-friendly Northumberland farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Alnwick
  • A 20-minute drive to Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle on the coast
  • Pub five minutes’ drive away; dark skies with views of the Milky Way
It’s no secret that Northumberland has a stunning coastline and lush green countryside, but fewer have been introduced to the dramatic evening skies and rural views of Shipley Lane Camping and Caravanning. At night, the Milky Way can often be spotted up in the dark sky – and when the sun’s still high in the sky, views over the Cheviot hills make up the green screen. From the well-maintained touring pitches (which all have electric hook-up and water and waste points) it's easy to explore the Northumberland coast and its beaches – Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnmouth are only 20 minutes’ drive away. The Northumberland Coast Path is splendid for a day of hiking and birdwatching, with the hilly trails of the Northumberland National Park about 25 minutes’ drive away. Those big names live up to their reputation, but local spots like the pub in the village of Eglingham (five minutes’ drive away) are just as lovely. Seek out a page-turner in the famed bookstore of Alnwick, 10 minutes’ drive away, too. If the scene sounds like something out of the Harry Potter wizarding world, you’re not far wrong; the town's castle is one of the series’ filming locations. The Alnwick Garden is mightily peaceful too, with 4000 different plants to spot as you stroll. Dogs are welcome on site as long as they get on with the resident dogs. The site’s border collies greet owner Robert with great excitement when he releases them from their kennels to help out on the livestock farm. Meanwhile, Timmy, who is now retired, likes to lie outside the house and keep an eye on things. The farm dogs take their duties seriously, so you may well hear a bit of barking at night.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, peaceful campsite offering stunning rural views and generous space for pitching. Guests appreciate the friendly and helpful owners, the quiet atmosphere, and the proximity to Alnwick. Facilities are basic, consisting mainly of portaloos, which are generally reported as clean, though some guests desired more amenities such as showers or washing-up areas. While generally quiet, occasional noise from other campers or nearby roads has been noted. It's considered good value for a relaxing, back-to-basics getaway.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely setting. Very peaceful. We live right on a main road, so the traffic noise on the other side of the hedge really didn't bother us. And the lovely cows over the fence from us were gorgeous. We found the moo-ing very relaxing.

Disliked There were 3 portaloos on site during our visit.....Fri 28 to Monday 31 Aug 2026. Toilet brushes were provided, but unfortunately our fellow campers (or some of them) didn't seem to know how to operate them. I have been camping for quite a while, on sites that have toilet and shower facilities, and that employ paid cleaners. If you choose to stay on a very basic site like this, you should have the decency to clean up your own skid marks!!!! You would clean up in your own house, surely?!! I got fed up cleaning, every time I used the loo. We left a day early. Won't be back.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Loved

1. Location
2. Peacefulness
3. Space between pitches
4. Cheery waves from the farmers as they passed by
5. Clear instructions and openess to.help if needed

Disliked As i was only staying a few days it didn't impact too negatively but I woukd live to stay longer but the basic toilet facilities ( 3 porta loos that all of us kept clean) and the lack.of shoqeing facilities will stop me staying longer.

Not sure if there is anything.intention to address this but if there is then ill ve the first in line to book for longer.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Simplicity and little extras like picnic tables and reserved signs

Disliked Portoloos, although clean the doors banged heavily, so during the night if you were close by they kinda upset the peace. not getting a checkin or a warden. we had a huge party in the filed next to our campervan and they had at least 5 dogs never on leads, music very loud although they switched off at 10.30pm and generally not following the rules. they were having lots of fun which is what its all about but no one to check on these instances and make sure all pitchups are behaving.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely, peaceful little campsite - no shower facilities so better for those with motor homes or camper vans but portaloo’s available and clean. Beautiful location and views, great for dog walkers and hikers. Easy to use camper van equipment i.e. chemical waste disposal. No litter or rubbish around.

Local attractions

Which way, captain? That’s what the kids might ask – and your answer may very well be the medieval hilltop fortress of Warkworth Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where the Duke of Northumberland once lived, or the 14th-century Dunstanburgh Castle (20 minutes). For good views, head to the Holy Island (40 minutes), a tidal island with an ancient priory. Northumberland National Park's Upper Coquet Valley surrounding the River Coquet (half an hour) is a dream for walks or bike rides, and the same can be said of Breamish Valley’s prehistoric hill forts (around 15 minutes). Further afield, the Kielder Observatory (an hour and a half) may be worth the journey for keen stargazers. Scottish border towns like Kelso (50 minutes) and Hadrian's Wall (50 minutes’ drive) are also within reach.
