Stablefell Holidays: Scenic pitches

General

  • Back-to-basics rural site in the stunningly scenic Yorkshire Dales
  • A 15-minute drive from Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery
  • Dog-friendly spot with firepits, clean toilets and hot showers

Those who believe back-to-basics doesn’t have to mean entirely no frills will feel vindicated at Stablefell Holidays, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Yorkshire town of Hawes that marries basic stays with the comfort of cosy facilities.

Deep in Yorkshire Dales National Park, this scenic spot is a fab background for nature-filled stays – it's a wildlife haven, about a mile from Lake Semerwater and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve. The former will keep guests busy with watersports (canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and fishing) while the latter will have guests looking to the skies in the hopes of spotting oystercatchers, snipe and whooper swans.

The site is dog-friendly too (as long as canine chums are kept on-lead), so it’s a good thing that there’s a wealth of lengthy wanders and hikes starting from base, including setting off across fields to the lake, following the River Bain as far as Bainbridge village, and wandering the valleys of Raydale and Wensleydale.

If more of a laidback hol is called for, that’s handily sorted too: the site is car free – wheelbarrows are available for bringing kit and caboodle from car park to pitch – so peace is not easily disturbed. You'll also be free from the sound of pinging gadgets too, as there's no wifi or mobile phone reception at this site (a bonus for many folk seeking a break from the constant communication of modern life…)

Each pitch comes equipped with a firepit for cosy evenings next to an open fire, and the clean facilities and hot showers will ensure guests feel fresh at all times.

Please note

Bookings must not consist of more than 1 different households.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

All tents must be moved to a different pitch after four days in use to preserve the grass.

Please note that to prevent boiler damage, the shower block will not be operational in weather conditions of 2C or below.

No wifi, no phone signal, no music on site so could relax and know there would not be disturbance in the middle of night (or day!). Beautiful, stunning surroundings; great location for lots of walks from campsite. Flat, generous pitches. Extremely helpful and friendly campsite owners. Clean and warm showers and toilets.

Glorious views, fancy new toilet and shower block, warm welcome from Jo as always. Love the fact all the pitches have firepits and you can get wood on site, and the pitches themselves are huge, loads of space for our massive tent! The walk to Semerwater, and the swim in the lake were a definite highlight.

    Disliked:

Would be helpful to have WiFi near the toilet block as there is zero phone signal, but also nice to be off grid

Location, facilities, fire pit, pitch size, feeling of security for the kids, lovely owners, communal freezer and lack of WiFi and cellular signal. Just a great place to chill, relax with the family.

    Disliked:

Our friend and her daughter joined us for our trip no additional pitch was necessary as they stayed in our tent. We arranged to pay the additional cost of 1 adult and 1 child but we found the fee of £50 to park her car for the five day stay was excessive.

From the manager...

Hi guys

Thankyou so much for the great review we are thrilled you enjoyed everything we have to offer

Car parking, yeah each pitch does have 1 vehicle included in this and it is listed that any additional vehicles have a £10 surcharge per day. Parking is limited on site and we try to discourage extra vehicles where possible in the village and for the environment .

We hope to welcome you back.

EVERYTHING - location, views, facilities are clean and brilliant quality, chickens running around so fresh eggs every morning, FIRE PITS!!! Such a lovely vibe seeing people out keeping warm and sat around a fire pit, my favourite addition to an already perfect site.

So much to do locally, Wensleydale creamery, caves, hawes, seamer water and amazing hikes.

The size of the pitch is massive…. Just the best site ever *****

Local attractions

Start stays with explores of nearby Hawes, a small town 15 minutes’ drive from the site. This is among Yorkshire’s most well-known spots, home not only to the Dales Countryside Museum, but the Wensleydale Creamery as well, where visitors can take part in tours and demonstrations, and catch up on the exploits of the man-and-dog duo that made Wensleydale cheese so famous. Not much into cheese? Sample other flavours at the town’s Raydale Preserves.

For a taste of history, there’s no need to travel all that far either. The site’s just 30 minutes from the 14th-century Bolton Castle and its bird of prey displays, archery demonstrations, wild boar feeding, and castle and garden tours. Slightly further afield are the follies of the Forbidden Corner, the remains of Middleham Castle (Richard III’s childhood home), and the ruined Jervaulx Abbey, all within 40 minutes of base.

To experience the Dales’ natural landscape, spend some time outdoors with pilgrimages to Aysgarth Falls (20 minutes), or dive below the surface at White Scar Cave (40 minutes) – the UK’s longest show cave – and Ingleborough Cave (55 minutes).

Prefer to spend some time away from the countryside instead? It’s 50 minutes from base to the large market town of Richmond and explores of its museums, castle, falls and art gallery.
