Stablefell Holidays: Site

General

  • Back-to-basics rural site in the stunningly scenic Yorkshire Dales
  • A 15-minute drive from Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery
  • Dog-friendly spot with firepits, clean toilets and hot showers

Those who believe back-to-basics doesn’t have to mean entirely no frills will feel vindicated at Stablefell Holidays, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Yorkshire town of Hawes that marries basic stays with the comfort of cosy facilities.

Deep in Yorkshire Dales National Park, this scenic spot is a fab background for nature-filled stays – it's a wildlife haven, about a mile from Lake Semerwater and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve. The former will keep guests busy with watersports (canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and fishing) while the latter will have guests looking to the skies in the hopes of spotting oystercatchers, snipe and whooper swans.

The site is dog-friendly too (as long as canine chums are kept on-lead), so it’s a good thing that there’s a wealth of lengthy wanders and hikes starting from base, including setting off across fields to the lake, following the River Bain as far as Bainbridge village, and wandering the valleys of Raydale and Wensleydale.

If more of a laidback hol is called for, that’s handily sorted too: the site is car free – wheelbarrows are available for bringing kit and caboodle from car park to pitch – so peace is not easily disturbed. You'll also be free from the sound of pinging gadgets too, as there's no wifi or mobile phone reception at this site (a bonus for many folk seeking a break from the constant communication of modern life…)

Each pitch comes equipped with a firepit for cosy evenings next to an open fire, and the clean facilities and hot showers will ensure guests feel fresh at all times.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Bookings must not consist of more than 1 different households.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

All tents must be moved to a different pitch after four days in use to preserve the grass.

Please note that to prevent boiler damage, the shower block will not be operational in weather conditions of 2C or below.

Visited from 31st July until Saturday 6 th august . Stunning location , right off the beating track so be mindful if you have a large vehicle it can get tight along the lanes .complete techno detox with zero mobile signal which left plenty of time to enjoy a campfire and a delicious pizza cooked by the campsite owners Jo and Mark . They are so friendly and super helpful . Facilities are lovely and clean , super hot showers , even a hairdryer . Croissants and fresh coffee at the weekend which was great too . Lots of info up at the cafe area about local walks and also a stones throw from a lovely lake where you can wild swim / kayak / paddle board etc . Really generous allocated pitches all with a campfire area .
Little on-site shop to buy logs and some basic provisions .
    We will be back

Everything! What a beautiful site. The owners were fantastic, couldn't do enough to help and go out of their way to do anything for us. Jo was so friendly, lovely and accommodating. The roads leading to the site are small, narrow and steep tracks but plenty of passing places. The little town of Hawes is 16 min drive and a lovely place to look around, have a bite to eat or have a drink. Lots of little shops and very cheap fuel at the little garage. Lots to do in the area and the owners have lots of information about what to do in the area. No signal or WiFi at all which is lovely to escape but makes planning journeys or checking weather a bit difficult, just do it before getting back to camp or once you're in Hawes. The toilets and showers were very modern, very clean and well maintained, the best we've ever had at a campsite! There was a fridge and freezer we could use, hair dryer, washing up area and drinking water. No charging facilities that I could see but we survived and we were there 6 nights. Cute chickens and goats on site. Pitches are a good size. Bbqs and fires were welcomed and each pitch had a fire pit. When there are few campers it is very quiet and peaceful, no road noise or anything to interrupt the peace of nature. You must have the homemade pizzas! They were lush and again, owners went out the way to make vegan ones for us. Little onsite shop for basics and can buy fire wood and kindling, they are very reasonably priced and good sized bits. It was lovely that they came with firestarters to help on the damp evenings. Whilst you cannot park at pitch, it was very helpful that we could drive down the track beside the pitch to pack and unpack before parking our van in the car park. The site felt secure with a gate and out in the sticks.

    Disliked:

This was just a personal thing for us but there is a main track running through the camp field and the pitches are either side of that. So when it was busy and lots of campers in both fields, there is a constant flow of people walking up and down to the toilets and car parks and it's quite close to your tent. The pitch sizes felt a little small when camped next to families with more than 2 children and when having immediate neighbours. The kids want to play ball games and run around and it meant that they kept coming on our pitch and balls kept hitting our tent. As there are two big fields, I wonder if it would be better to put adults only or families with teen kids in the bottom field and families with young kids up the top field so they are closer to toilets/car park and can play with each other. Quiet time was from 9.30pm and saldy some families did not respect this and were still very loud at 11pm. Again, not a fault of the owner at all and I'm sure a one off and other campers are more respectful. Sad to have left but will certainly come back in the future!

Fabulous site in a wonderfully rural location.

The staff were friendly and the check in process was efficient.

Amenities were great and the option of having a fire on your pitch is a real treat these days!

    Disliked:

The smell of the owners septic tank from our pitch (we were nearest to the owners property)

From the manager...

Good afternoon,

Thankyou for the great review of our campsite - we are pleased you enjoyed your stay.

We are sorry you noticed the septic tank however sadly when you live in the country and have a countryside campsite septic tanks are the only option.
We don't have the option of mains drainage or gas like in towns, so unfortunately when it rains (like it did heavily Saturday night) on occasion it may be noticable.

Spacious level plots, perfect for dogs or children or simply for privacy. The amenities are amazing,so clean and well kept. Staff are very willing, friendly and check your ok now and then but give you privacy at the same time. Beautiful views with the sun all day and a stunning sunset if the weather permits. There is a large notice board near the amenities with a few very large maps for walks in the area, from 5 mile,7 mile or 10 mile walks .. we have completed 3 already, also a "things to do" list,in or near by the area. This was our second visit here and we love it that much that we are coming back in mid August.

Local attractions

Start stays with explores of nearby Hawes, a small town 15 minutes’ drive from the site. This is among Yorkshire’s most well-known spots, home not only to the Dales Countryside Museum, but the Wensleydale Creamery as well, where visitors can take part in tours and demonstrations, and catch up on the exploits of the man-and-dog duo that made Wensleydale cheese so famous. Not much into cheese? Sample other flavours at the town’s Raydale Preserves.

For a taste of history, there’s no need to travel all that far either. The site’s just 30 minutes from the 14th-century Bolton Castle and its bird of prey displays, archery demonstrations, wild boar feeding, and castle and garden tours. Slightly further afield are the follies of the Forbidden Corner, the remains of Middleham Castle (Richard III’s childhood home), and the ruined Jervaulx Abbey, all within 40 minutes of base.

To experience the Dales’ natural landscape, spend some time outdoors with pilgrimages to Aysgarth Falls (20 minutes), or dive below the surface at White Scar Cave (40 minutes) – the UK’s longest show cave – and Ingleborough Cave (55 minutes).

Prefer to spend some time away from the countryside instead? It’s 50 minutes from base to the large market town of Richmond and explores of its museums, castle, falls and art gallery.
