A view through the trees

General

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • A 15-minute walk to Castle Howard; 15 minutes' drive to Kirkham Abbey
  • Fishing, play area and dog-walking area; close to a café and farm shop

Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates.

Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival.

The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a playground and a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room.

Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (especially if you're visiting during one of the high-season concert weekends), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails.

This site is a member of Coastline Leisure group.

Castle Howard is lovely and a very short drive away.
Malton and York are close by and easy to get to the coast should you wish to.

There was hand sanitizer everywhere which was great and on most occasions soap in the toilets (1 morning there wasn't any left, this was not rectified until lunchtime).

    Disliked:

The site we did not feel was Covid-19 safety compliant. The toilets were to narrow you were literally brushing past people to enter or leave. There was no management in place for dealing with this like a booking system or max numbers in the toilet blocks. Clearly the physical structure can't be changed but a suitable system to mitigate risk could be implemented.

It's a free for a all to.get your pitch they aren't allocated I suspect when its busy tents just go everywhere.

The facilities don't seem adequate for the number of visitors the park can accommodate.

No option to freeze ice packs.

There isn't a play park on site as advertised. It's at the castle which you pay per day to visit.

Location was great and the first night was lovely, not too busy and some nice families, all very quiet.

    Disliked:

Facilities were awful! Not at all covid safe. Very narrow shower block with only four female and 4 male showers. This wasn't a massive issue on the first night but when we returned to site on the second day, it was clear that we wouldn't be able to safely use them again. My husband went to the gents and said there was excrement on the toilet floor and on the shower curtain.
Then the mobs arrived! And they kept coming and coming. Management hastily marked out some narrow pitches with spray to get more in. There must have been over 100 tents over the two camping fields. Then the parties started and continued until 2am. We called the police at midnight to report a family fighting with children clearly in distress.
Management obviously trying to maximize turnover with little regard for personal or covid safety. Do not visit with a young family. It is not safe or suitable

Layout is good - our position was nice - with established trees. Level spacious pitch. There was a problem with the electricity supply but staff sorted an electrician within a day of reporting. Nice location for a visit to Castle Howard. Malton is also very nice - had a fabulous meal at The New Malton👍

    Disliked:

Toilet facilities woefully inadequate for the number of people staying and old fashioned layout (v narrow inside - social distancing not an option) so some measures should have been in place ie face masks and a marked waiting/queueing system outside. Overflowing rubbish at the bins - not emptied during our 3 day stay and got progressively worse. Very limited options for walking your dogs unless you walk at the side of a road.

Liked the location with lovely views over the lake. Great flat field for pitching our tent. Hot showers every time we used them.

    Disliked:

The walk to the toilet and shower block from where we pitched up was quite a distance so don’t wait until you’re desperate. Although the toilet and shower block were always fully stocked with toilet paper and hand wash/sanitizer (which was great) we felt it could have done with an extra manual clean after busy times (especially during this pandemic). Finally, management need to be patrolling the site at night as there was noise and loud music from groups of visitors till 2/3am. Apart from that we had a great stay!

We had a lovely one night stay on this family friendly site. The owners were very welcoming and the pitch clean and of a good size with lovely countryside views, and less than a 2 minute walk to the fishing lake. The beautiful Howard Castle was also in easy walking distance. We used our own facilities in our motorhome as we only stayed for one night so cannot review these, but we loved the motorhome pitch area and will definitely book again.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river.

Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars).

Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
