  • Peaceful dog-friendly site surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside
  • A 20-minute drive to York, the Yorkshire Wolds Way and Castle Howard
  • Walk to the Northwood Trail, a café and restaurant; farm shop nearby
A chilled drink in hand, the Yorkshire Wolds on the horizon and a belly full of fresh farm food grilled on your barbecue… that’s one way to spend an afternoon at Beech Farm. Other ways include hiking out into the Yorkshire Wolds (the site is around 20 minutes’ drive from the Yorkshire Wolds Way for long-distance hikes) or setting about exploring the immediate countryside. A 20-minute drive from York, this is a peaceful escape for any city dwellers… or indeed, a wise spot for those looking to check out its chocolate-making history, historic minster and Shambles shopping street from a base that’s in the countryside. The gorgeous site is half a mile back from a main road and has views across the fields, woods and the distant Yorkshire Wolds. The site is simply an attractive field with a rustic toilet, shower and washing-up block, so it’s just the place for those seeking a back to basics break and lots of peace and quiet. Handily, dogs are very much welcome too. Yorkshire strolls might be next up. If so, the three-mile Northwood Trail is just 15 minutes’ walk from the site too. On the trail, there’s a restaurant, café and a simple playground. If you’re after more tasty things to eat (or to take back for a barbecue), there’s a farm shop and café five minutes’ drive away (or a 45-minute walk away), as well as a cluster of pubs in Stamford Bridge (five minutes’ drive or 45 minutes’ walk).

Liked Rural setting but only 10 miles to York and everything that offers.

5 min drive or 45 min walk (albeit along a fairly busy road) to the town of Stamford Bridge. Food at the Two Cups was good, strawberry picking at the strawberry farm a good activity for kids.

The site itself is basic but that is what is advertised. Lovely camping field with 2 toilets and 2 showers. Always had hot water. Small but adequate kitchen area.

Lots of space and you can pick your own spot, very quiet during the week and much busier but still pleasant at the weekend.

We throughly enjoyed our stay.

Liked We had the best weekend at this campsite and will definitely be back! The site is a great size and never felt overcrowded, which made for a really peaceful and relaxing stay. We loved that you could choose where to pitch, giving everyone plenty of space.

The showers and toilets were always spotless, and having a freezer available was a huge bonus. The whole site was calm, quiet, and had such a friendly atmosphere.

The owner came over to introduce himself and make sure we were settled in and had everything we needed, which was a lovely personal touch. His son was also incredibly kind and gave the kids a ride in his buggy, which absolutely made their day!

If you're looking for a welcoming, well-maintained campsite with a relaxed atmosphere, I couldn't recommend this place enough. We can't wait to come back!

Disliked Nothing other than we didnt book longer

Non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Quiet and lots of space. Animals nerby to watch.
Warm showers with hooks and bench to put our stuff on so it didn't get wet.
Showers and toilets are rustic and open to the elements, so lucky it iwas warm!
Hairdryer and mirror were welcome - thank you.

Disliked Everyone was cleaning their teeth using the only cold water tap at one washing up sink! No cold water tap in the 2 toilets - surely this would be an easy thing to do and be much more hygenic.
Windy field with nowhere to shelter - hedges/fences!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely site, the little extras like kettle and hairdryer were great addition. Would have been a 10 but second night very noisy

Disliked Unfortunately other leolle staying unplugged kettle so they could charge their phones. Bit much still playing football at gone 10 and kicking ball into tents. Spoilt it a bit.

Disliked De faciliteiten waren oke maar niet super (de douches waren bovenaan en beneden flink open, waardoor je zowat buiten stond te douchen. De wind had vrij spel.)

Liked Proximity to local village, clean facilities, hot water and freezer

Disliked Nothing we disliked but it could be even better with a fridge- would happily pay more per stay and there be a fridge

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the suggestion. We decided against a fridge because we thought it would get dirty very easily and we couldn’t get one big enough to facilitate the whole site

Local attractions

Soaking up some of Yorkshire’s history should be no hard feat around here. Start with the rural side of Yorkshire at Murton Park (10 minutes’ drive), which is a farming museum with 14 acres of playgrounds, animals and historic areas all about Yorkshire farms in the present and past. Castle Howard (20 minutes) is a similar spot with a historic house and estate, playground and walks where the fashionable Howard family have strolled for 300 years or so. Keep up your history-themed tour with a visit to the National Railway Museum York (half an hour) or welcome a bit of wildlife art into your itinerary with a look around the Robert Fuller Gallery Ltd (20 minutes) – and see what inspiration strikes for when you’re relaxing around the green spaces at Beech Farm. Any folk who have come prepared with all their hiking gear and who are itching to get going will get in a good, long hike around the Yorkshire Wolds Way (around 20 minutes), a Wolds trail totalling 79 miles. Failing that, the Howardian Hills National Landscape (25 minutes) has a gorgeous set of trails.
