Beech Farm: Visitor image of the beautiful location pitched next to a stunning oak tree

General

  • Peaceful dog-friendly site surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside
  • A 20-minute drive to York, the Yorkshire Wolds Way and Castle Howard
  • Walk to the Northwood Trail, a café and restaurant; farm shop nearby

A chilled drink in hand, the Yorkshire Wolds on the horizon and a belly full of fresh farm food grilled on your barbecue… that’s one way to spend an afternoon at Beech Farm. Other ways include hiking out into the Yorkshire Wolds (the site is around 20 minutes’ drive from the Yorkshire Wolds Way for long-distance hikes) or setting about exploring the immediate countryside.

A 20-minute drive from York, this is a peaceful escape for any city dwellers… or indeed, a wise spot for those looking to check out its chocolate-making history, historic minster and Shambles shopping street from a base that’s in the countryside.

The gorgeous site is half a mile back from a main road and has views across the fields, woods and the distant Yorkshire Wolds. The site is simply a field with running water and a toilet, so it’s just the place for those seeking a back to basics break and lots of peace and quiet. Handily, dogs are very much welcome too. In fact, there’s a nice walk right from the site and plenty more nearby.

Yorkshire strolls might be next up. If so, the three-mile Northwood Trail is just 15 minutes’ walk from the site too. On the trail, there’s a restaurant, café and a simple playground. If you’re after more tasty things to eat (or to take back for a barbecue), there’s a farm shop and café five minutes’ drive away (or a 45-minute walk away), as well as a cluster of pubs in Stamford Bridge (five minutes’ drive or 45 minutes’ walk).

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Donkeys and pigs - big hit with my daughter.
Catherine rang back or text straight away.
So close to park and ride for York.
    Plenty of room
    Signal good for mobile

    Disliked:

Nothing to ‘dislike’ but things that maybe worth noting…. Sat nav took us to Moor Farm which is the other side to Beech Farm. No one’s fault but worth being aware.
No chemical waste yet, Catherine offered alternative but not ideal.
Didn’t meet the site / farm owners, no issue with this for us, but sometimes nice to meet the owners.
Glad we didn’t need to use the one portaloo, understand toilets to be added in the future this will be a needed addition.

Lack of electricity and chemical disposal point

From the manager...

Really glad you liked the location.
We do advertise that there is no electricity etc so leaving a 4/10 review because of that is a little like someone staying at a travel lodge and bemoaning the lack of a Mitchelin starred restaurant and spa.
Perhaps next time book somewhere with electric if that’s what you need.

Farm was lovely with great views. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. Loved to see the animals.

    Disliked:

Porter-loo wasn’t ideal, but we did know this was the only facility there before we booked. We did find public conveniences close to the site which made it better.

Such a lovely site beautiful trees and nicely situated. REEALLY cute tiny pigs and chickens. I also made friends with the very friendly donkeys!
Catherine was so very accommodating to us, as we were traveling as a large family group we were trying to find somewhere we could travel all together and camp together. Catherine couldn't have been more helpful on the day, as she was worried we wouldn't be able to camp together she offered us a space away from the main field so even if it got very full we would be able to.
It turns out even though it was their busiest weekend there was plenty of room to comfortably camp and no one was squashed, perfect amount of people camping I think. It was a lovely and simple site with just a tap and a toilet but that is absolutely perfect for us for a short weekend.
If your thinking of camping here do it!
We will be back next year!

    Disliked:

The only problem we had was how full the toilet got on the last night and day before as it was a bank holiday weekend a second toilet just for the weekend would have solved this problem. But it didn't ruin our time at all just something to note for busier weekends.

Only 1 portaloo. We were aware of this before booking but by the end of the weekend it was so full that everyone's 'business' was just sat in the bowl.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I understand your feelings about the toilet. I apologised to as many as I could as they left. The problem we had was a couple of motor homes emptying into them, which is obviously not permitted, the toilet would have otherwise been adequate. So I do apologise about that. We very much look forward to next year when we can wave goodbye to the portaloo!

Soaking in some of Yorkshire’s history should be no hard feat around here. Start with the rural side of Yorkshire at Murton Park (10 minutes’ drive), which is a farming museum with 14 acres of playgrounds, animals and historic areas all about Yorkshire farms in the present and past.

Castle Howard (20 minutes) is a similar spot with a historic house and estate, playground and walks where the fashionable Howard family have strolled for 300 years or so.

Keep up your history-themed tour with a visit to the National Railway Museum York (half an hour) or welcome a bit of wildlife art into your itinerary with a look around the Robert Fuller Gallery Ltd (20 minutes) - and see what inspiration strikes for when you’re relaxing around the green spaces at Beech Farm.

Any folk who have come prepared with all their hiking gear and who are itching to get going will get in a good, long hike around the Yorkshire Wolds Way (around 20 minutes), a Wolds trail totalling 79 miles. Failing that, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes) has a gorgeous set of trails.
