  • Peaceful dog-friendly site surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside
  • A 20-minute drive to York, the Yorkshire Wolds Way and Castle Howard
  • Walk to the Northwood Trail, a café and restaurant; farm shop nearby
A chilled drink in hand, the Yorkshire Wolds on the horizon and a belly full of fresh farm food grilled on your barbecue… that’s one way to spend an afternoon at Beech Farm. Other ways include hiking out into the Yorkshire Wolds (the site is around 20 minutes’ drive from the Yorkshire Wolds Way for long-distance hikes) or setting about exploring the immediate countryside. A 20-minute drive from York, this is a peaceful escape for any city dwellers… or indeed, a wise spot for those looking to check out its chocolate-making history, historic minster and Shambles shopping street from a base that’s in the countryside. The gorgeous site is half a mile back from a main road and has views across the fields, woods and the distant Yorkshire Wolds. The site is simply an attractive field with a rustic toilet, shower and washing-up block, so it’s just the place for those seeking a back to basics break and lots of peace and quiet. Handily, dogs are very much welcome too. Yorkshire strolls might be next up. If so, the three-mile Northwood Trail is just 15 minutes’ walk from the site too. On the trail, there’s a restaurant, café and a simple playground. If you’re after more tasty things to eat (or to take back for a barbecue), there’s a farm shop and café five minutes’ drive away (or a 45-minute walk away), as well as a cluster of pubs in Stamford Bridge (five minutes’ drive or 45 minutes’ walk).

What customers say

A top spot! Clean, quiet, farm views, friendly hosts. Spacious sites, farm animals a hit. Basic but clean amenities (hot showers, loos, kitchen). Peaceful base, but remember facilities are no-frills, and queues can happen.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Great outdoor space to pitch a large tent. Love seeing the chickens and donkeys! Great space for kids to play on the field too.

Facilities were kept topped up and the owners were very communicative!

Disliked Facilities could have done with more of a clean and a bin added near the sinks as there was a lot of left over food.

Only problem was some of the guests on site were a little less considerate of the quiet times which can’t be helped.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Beautiful camping with great facilities in a nice spot.

Disliked There are safety issues. When I went to the toilet at 3 AM I saw two guys in black on a fatbike/e-bike leaving the camping with great speed just in front of me. A car or motorcycle was waiting for them at the entrance, they were gone in seconds, it was a well planned operation. Next morning we found out that two firmly locked e-bikes were stolen from a camper. This happens more often I understood from the receptionist. Police came in, the case was taken seriously, but what really lacks is a nightkeeper or at least a fence. It felt rather unsafe.

Local attractions

Soaking up some of Yorkshire’s history should be no hard feat around here. Start with the rural side of Yorkshire at Murton Park (10 minutes’ drive), which is a farming museum with 14 acres of playgrounds, animals and historic areas all about Yorkshire farms in the present and past. Castle Howard (20 minutes) is a similar spot with a historic house and estate, playground and walks where the fashionable Howard family have strolled for 300 years or so. Keep up your history-themed tour with a visit to the National Railway Museum York (half an hour) or welcome a bit of wildlife art into your itinerary with a look around the Robert Fuller Gallery Ltd (20 minutes) – and see what inspiration strikes for when you’re relaxing around the green spaces at Beech Farm. Any folk who have come prepared with all their hiking gear and who are itching to get going will get in a good, long hike around the Yorkshire Wolds Way (around 20 minutes), a Wolds trail totalling 79 miles. Failing that, the Howardian Hills National Landscape (25 minutes) has a gorgeous set of trails.
