  • Well-maintained, peaceful Yorkshire park 10 minutes’ drive from Whitby
  • Robin Hood’s Bay five minutes’ drive and Scarborough half an hour
  • Restaurant and bar on site, plus a play area and dedicated dog park
Set in 10 acres of stunning North Yorkshire moors and countryside, York House Caravan Park is just 10 minutes’ drive away from Whitby – not that you’ll need much reminding, as the Gothic abbey is visible from parts of the site. This spacious site in the small village of Hawsker appeals to both couples and families – and it must be doing something right, as guests often come back year after year. There are two play areas for kids, and also plenty of opportunities for gentle strolls and relaxing in the peaceful surroundings. It’s a canine-friendly place too, with a dedicated dog-walking field. From the site, there’s easy access to the Cinder Track, a 21-mile path along the disused railway from Whitby to Scarborough. Leaving the car behind on your adventures? There's a good bus service from Hawsker to Scarborough in one direction and Middlesbrough in the other. On-site facilities include a well-maintained shower block, a washing-up and laundry room, and – saving the best news for last – a bar and restaurant for those days when you just don’t feel like catering for yourselves (note that during low season, they are only open from Thursday to Sunday). There’s also a local pub five minutes’ walk away, which serves tasty home-cooked food and a good selection of drinks.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Good location. Things for the children to do (parks), dog walking field and cafe/pub (although this often didn’t appear open when we stayed). Facilities basic but clean, although the site was very quiet.

Disliked No correspondence regarding the recent Moores fires before arriving. Lots of road closures which made access difficult and were not informed of this prior to arrival. Not given any update or information once arriving either.
Showering was difficult with young child as cubical were very small and no family bathrooms.

Electric optional gravel touring pitch

Liked The bar was a nice seating area

Disliked Very small pitches crammed close together.
The showers where you stand to have shower the water from the 4 showers gathers around your feet. With the drains clogged with hair this wasn't a nice experience.
Ques for toilets, shower and dishwasher.
Supposed to stay 2 nights left after 1.

The bbq/live music was a great addition.

Disliked Toilets/shower block dirty at times.
Overly complicated bar/cafe for ordering

Electric optional grass tent pitch (large)

Liked Site clean and tidy, all staff were friendly and helpful.

Pub/cafe was lovely and dog friendly. They had a brilliant singer on one of our nights.

The woman who checked us in was very helpful and offored us advise on buses and electricity point. All staff were helpful and friendly.

Disliked The toilets were filthy, even after cleaning. The drains were blocked and the whole room was flooded most mornings and evenings.

Many of the toilets were blocked throughout the day and would be filled with toilet roll and poo until they were un blocked at lunchtime the following day when they were closed for cleaning.

The site was beautiful they could just do with an upgrade to the toilet/shower block.
Would have also been nice to have better mirrors and a place to dry your hair.

York house family camping pod

Liked Friendly and quiet site. Pods were warm and felt very safe and secure. At night the sky was full of stars as the light pollution in the locality is minimal. Location is very handy for exploring, a few owls could be heard at night too

Disliked Toilets and showers are adequate, could certainly do with an update. Individual shower and toilet pods are massively better and can be much more easily cleaned without the need to close both toilet/shower blocks for an hour

Local attractions

York House Caravan Park is nicely located on the eastern edge of the North York Moors National Park. It's a short drive from here to Robin Hood’s Bay (five minutes’ drive), where ghost walks tell the story of times gone by. For a small taste of the village's smugglers' history, head to the museum. For hikers, there are fine choices around such as the 109-mile Cleveland Way (five minutes) through the North York Moors, and the Coast to Coast Path (five minutes) ending at Robin Hood’s Bay. Those who prefer to travel at higher speeds can take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the station in Whitby (10 minutes) – after spending some time exploring the famed abbey, of course. Goathland (20 minutes) is a popular destination – it's the home of the TV series 'Heartbeat' and starred in the Harry Potter films too. There are so, so, so many pretty spots along the coast that you might find it hard to choose where to spend your time. However, Ravenscar (20 minutes), a pretty coastal village with splendid cliffs, and the more ‘happening’ Scarborough (half an hour) are some very nice picks.
