  • Biker site by a café bar, open since the 1970s
  • Café open daily with weekly and weekend biker meets
  • Sunday roast, weekly carvery and licensed bar
‘Run by bikers for bikers’ goes the tagline of the roaringly popular Squires Café Bar in Selby, North Yorkshire, which has been rallying – and fortifying – biker troops since the 1970s. Bike and club meets, regular events and live music, an on-site bike shop and a once-monthly Autojumble to pick up secondhand bike gear have all been lined up over the years by owners Harry and Sue, who ran the biker-friendly Squires Milk Bar at Sherburn-in-Elmet before moving here. Café prices at Squires are cheap as chips (which you can have with gravy and stuffed inside a giant Yorkshire pud); for something a bit posher, a carvery of the café’s own farm-reared Aberdeen Angus is available for Sunday roast and on Thursday evenings; and for pints/events, a licensed bar and an events room for hire are available too. Squires Café Bar is open seven days a week in summer, but it’s on Wednesdays and weekends that regulars roar up: Wednesdays following the local biker meet tradition started by Harry and Sue in the 1960s, and weekends for meets, charity events, live gigs and general lounging about in leathers. To preserve the grass areas of the site, the owners allow the use of off-ground barbecues, but not one that will damage the grass. Campfires are not allowed.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Ok if your into motorbikes & noise. On arrival had to drive through hundreds of bikers congregated in the car park drooling over other bikers machines. Stood in the large queue for the cafe to get to reception. Was placed on a touring pitch with electric at an an optional addition of £5 and showers operated with £1 tokens. Factor in these added extras I could of stayed on a decent site , this is more like a traveller's site. I would recommend that the profits from the greasy cafe put towards filling in the pot holes to the entrance of the touring site & upgrading the worn out facilities. Will not be staying here again.

From the manager: Dear Ian Pratt of 14 Braemar Court Blackhill, Consett, DH8 8TZ. 07484 224022. Thank you for your kind comments, your obvious disliking towards the members of the motorcycle community and their bikes is noted. I'm sorry you had to queue in the 'greasy' cafe to get to reception, if we had known in advance we could have created a fast lane to save you the inconvenience. If you had taken the time to read all the details about our site you would have known about the pricing of electric etc etc which might have saved you the frustration you have shared with your comments on here. I do apologize about the approach road - although it hasn't stopped raining for the last 4 months and we have found it hard to get it repaired. There were over a dozen bookings this last weekend that all had an enjoyable stay with us, unfortunately you weren't one of them!

Liked: Very friendly and helpful team. Good food and if you’re into motorbikes, great chat.

Disliked: No showers but frankly, I was only there for one night so it didn’t matter so much

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Was a nice quiet location besides when we got there a dog was barking all night long and it’s extremely close to a railway line where trains run all night long but staff were friendly and was worth the stay cafe food and drinks were spot on. Toilets near by, washing up station available too.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: On arrival we went into squires cafe to book on the site,( go past the long line of hungry bikers, they are queueing for food ) we were given a small map of the site explaining where toilets, showers etc are. And purchased a £5.00 electricity card. The £5.00 lasted from 6pm till about 6 or 7 in the morning. It ran out while we were sleeping. The site was quite quiet, once motorcycles had all left, didn't mind the noise of the bikes but the trains running near the cafe used a horn on approaching something in the area. ( All day & night ) We did get used to it after a few hours. In the cafe we had a carvery meal, it was fine, it done the job. Near the cafe is a motorcycle clothing shop, all sorts for sale. A fish and chip shop and a tattoo shop. Enjoy.

Disliked: All in all, there was nothing we disliked, it is what it is, a bike, scooter etc meeting place. Well worth a visit. But be warned, it gets very busy. One thing, the road off the main road is full of pot holes, drive/ride carefully and just enjoy the place.

Liked: The bar is a Mecca for bikers and the food is pretty good nowadays

Disliked: The camping field is very uneven and next to the railway line. Trains sound their horns through the night and the pub dog barks a lot at night too.

Liked: We went in December and the weather wasn’t brilliant but I’m sure in summer it would be lovely. Facilities are clean and basic. The on-site cafe served lovely food and we ate there twice - saved us cooking in the motorhome. It’s a massive motorbike venue so if you’re into bikes it’s brilliant. Very quiet at night. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Loads of room to walk the dogs safely.

Local attractions

Squires Café Bar is well placed for the Yorkshire coast and both the Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors national parks, about 10 miles from Leeds city centre and with York within biking distance for a day trip. On fine and sunny days, ramble/bike along, fish from or take a boat out on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the longest in Northern England, or take a picnic to the 1500 acres of parkland at Temple Newsam House and Farm, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots’s caddish hubby Lord Darnley and listed as one of the top three museum sites in the country by an author in the know. Xscape Yorkshire is a nifty nearby option for rainy days or indoor evenings, as it’s crammed with activities such as Laserzone and adventure golf, restaurants, bars, clubs, a cinema and shops (the outlet shopping village Junction 32 is just opposite). Further afield, the Doncaster Dome has a seven-pool waterworld and the UK's only split level ice rink – you’ll have had loads of practice by then at the Squires Café Bar rink…
