Nice large pitched well spaced out
Our pitch

  • On a small farm with no passing traffic
  • Walking and biking routes very close by
  • A few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Would you like to pitch up among Pickering peace? Farm the folks (and dog) out to Haugh Rigg Farm four miles from town, set in a peaceful and quiet spot at the end of a small track with no passing traffic – you'll probably already know that splendid North Yorkshire scenery is all around too. Haugh Rigg is a non-working farm that sees peeps escape to it for a peaceful retreat, as it has walking and biking routes very much nearby – again, probably no need to point out the splendid North Yorkshire scenery… It's only a few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and to yet more hikes and bikes in Dalby Forest. Amenities include a toilet and shower block, a washing machine, and slides and swings for the kids; a small charge applies for using the showers and the washing machine. Starter packs with wood offcuts, small logs, kindling and firelighters for firepits and barbecues are available to buy on arrival. Please be aware that there are no bins on site, so you'll be asked to take all rubbish away with you. There's also a chemical waste disposal point on site. And finally, as this is a peaceful and hidden-away site, do look at online maps to be sure of where you're going: it's a quiet spot and doesn't shout out its location.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked A very quiet, peaceful site with lovely views. Level ground and reasonably well-sheltered.

The showers were hot and clean and the washing up area was handy. There's also a washing machine, although we didn't use this.

The owner is friendly and full of local knowledge.

Around a 15 minute drive from Pickering town, which has pubs, restaurants and shops.

Nice owner

Disliked Constant smell around toilets.

Could do with lighting to toilets at night and some general signage.

Being picky here but a baby change would be so helpful in the shower room.

Good quiet site for a couple of days stay. Ideal for Pickering & NYMR!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Secluded woodland location. Peace and quiet. Clean pitches. Near to Pickering and train station.

Disliked Facilities were a bit too cobwebby although we knew it was in a forest, and they were smaller than expected and not enough for the amount of people on site. The showers were either scalding or freezing, nothing in between. Could do with a regular service clean in general.

Route directions

Please note that YO18 7JW is the best postcode, but when your satnav says you have reached your destination you should carry on up the road for half a mile and then bear right, heading over the speed bumps. This will take you directly to the site, which is located at the very end of the road. The owner may not be on the site all of the time. If they are not there upon your arrival, please do not turn into the wooden drive gates but continue along the road to campsite gate where there will be a board with instructions on.

Local attractions

There's quite a bit to do in the old market town of Pickering, a four- or five-mile walk away: as well as plenty of shops and its Monday market, people also come to see its castle, the Beck Isle Museum and the medieval wall paintings at Pickering Church. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world, trainspotters) starts from Pickering on its beaut run through the moors to Grosmont. Haugh Rigg Farm has peeps pitching up in an area with plenty of coastal opps too: Flamingo Land is eight miles away, Helmsley 18 and Scarborough 20; if you're off to the coast you'll also likely like a look around Dracula, James Cook and goth centre Whitby.
