General

  • On a small farm with no passing traffic
  • Walking and biking routes very close by
  • A few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Would you like to pitch up among Pickering peace? Farm the folks (and dog) out to Haugh Rigg Farm four miles from town, set in a peaceful and quiet spot at the end of a small track with no passing traffic – you'll probably already know that splendid North Yorkshire scenery is all around too.

Haugh Rigg is a non-working farm that sees peeps escape to it for a peaceful retreat, as it has walking and biking routes very much nearby – again, probably no need to point out the splendid North Yorkshire scenery... It's only a few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and to yet more hikes and bikes in Dalby Forest.

Amenities include a toilet and shower block, a washing machine, and slides and swings for the kids; a small charge applies for using the showers and the washing machine. Starter packs with wood offcuts, small logs, kindling and firelighters for firepits and barbecues are available to buy on arrival.

And finally, as this is a peaceful and hidden away site, do look at online maps to be sure of where you're going: it's a quiet spot and doesn't shout out its location.

Having to take own rubbish home as all cars were packed to brim when we came so had to squeeze it all in!

The location was fabulous. Lorraine is very friendly and welcoming and always available to talk to if there are any questions or concerns. Loved the free chimnea and other fire pots. Loved the pebbles that flowed in the dark and the almost tame bunny.

    Disliked:

No dislikes apart from the rain and even that was quite entertaining. I guess another shower and loo maybe for peak times but it wasn't really an issue.

From the manager...

Thank you, all those little thing make a difference I suppose, sorry you had such rubbish weather.

This campsite is small with some electric hook ups. The owner is friendly and came to see us everyday. It has 2 toilets and 2 showers which were clean and washing up facilities. When I stayed it rained and the site got a little muddy where the cars came in and out but it drained quickly. A bonus was the freezer placed so that cool blocks could be frozen. The glow in the dark pebbles along the path to the toilets were inspired and great fun. I would definitely stay here again.

    Disliked:

The site is stony so you have to angle the tent pegs in at a steeper angle then usual.

From the manager...

Lovely comments , real shame about the weather but glad it didn't ruin it too much for you, may see you again.

Small, clean and well run site with spacious pitches. 07/08/2017

Very friendly farm campsite. Lorraine owner ensures the site is well run with spotless facilities and lots of suggestions about what to do in and around the area.

The pitches are generous and well spaced, the ground is flat and a bit stony but we had no difficulty in pitching our tents and had plenty of space to sit out for meals and to enjoy the sunshine.

There is easy access to Pickering by car, once out on the main road and there is a village with a pub you can walk to about 2 miles over the fields. The access road to the site can get muddy in wet weather so there is a need to drive slowly and carefully if like us you don't have a SUV or 4 wheel drive.

The site has no facilities for rubbish disposal but Lorraine kindly offered to take away any recyclable bottles or tins as we stayed for 6 nights.

The site is welcoming and safe for families with children, dogs and those who just love being out of doors and enjoy the countryside. There is plenty of local wildlife, we saw and heard rabbits, owls and other birds plus wild flowers. The skies at night are breathtaking as they are dark and clear making it possible to see all the stars and the Milky Way!

Lorraine has responded to feedback and provided a lighted route to the toilet facilities but this is a country campsite so bring a torch if you plan to go out at night.

    Disliked:

There had been a lot of rain prior to our visit so there were some small but deep ruts in the access road to the site so we had to take care when leaving and entering.

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for all your lovely comments, glad you enjoyed it, I love the comment about the dark path, I only put some glow in the dark pebbles down but they look ace in the dark.
Thanks

The peacefulness, not commercialised, blends lovely with the scenery, if you're looking for a family retreat without the commercialisation of a holiday camp, this is the place to go, the facilities are perfect for the site, the children could find loads to do, and places to go around the site without having to kept on reigns, very, very friendly service, second to none, we will definitely return here, and do so more than once a year, just arrived home and already missing the place.

    Disliked:

Nothing, can't say a bad word about the place.

Local attractions

There's quite a bit to do in the old market town of Pickering a four or five mile walk away: as well as plenty of shops and its Monday market, people also come to see its castle, the Beck Isle Museum and the medieval wall paintings at Pickering Church.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world, trainspotters) starts from Pickering on its beaut run through the moors to Grosmont.

Haugh Rigg Farm has peeps pitching up in an area with plenty of coastal opps too: Flamingo Land is eight miles away, Helmsley 18 and Scarborough 20; if you're off to the coast you'll also likely like a look around Dracula, James Cook and goth centre Whitby.
