General

  • On a small farm with no passing traffic
  • Walking and biking routes very close by
  • A few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Would you like to pitch up among Pickering peace? Farm the folks (and dog) out to Haugh Rigg Farm four miles from town, set in a peaceful and quiet spot at the end of a small track with no passing traffic – you'll probably already know that splendid North Yorkshire scenery is all around too.

Haugh Rigg is a non-working farm that sees peeps escape to it for a peaceful retreat, as it has walking and biking routes very much nearby – again, probably no need to point out the splendid North Yorkshire scenery... It's only a few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and to yet more hikes and bikes in Dalby Forest.

Amenities include a toilet and shower block, a washing machine, and slides and swings for the kids; a small charge applies for using the showers and the washing machine. Starter packs with wood offcuts, small logs, kindling and firelighters for firepits and barbecues are available to buy on arrival.

And finally, as this is a peaceful and hidden away site, do look at online maps to be sure of where you're going: it's a quiet spot and doesn't shout out its location.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Facilities/activities including washing machines are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A charge of 50p applies for the use of shower.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 25 consecutive nights.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

There are no communal bins on the pitching area of the site, as these were misused in previous seasons. Rubbish must be taken home. There is a bin for dog waste bags but they must be tied off before being put in the bin. Household and recycling bins are available for the static caravan.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review, sorry it was off the beaten track, it does say on my site info and many reviews that we are out in the country. The slide is situated on a grass bank and can easily be moved further along if you had wished.

The site is small and off the beaten track which makes it peaceful, also the owner couldn't be more helpful. Toilets and showers were always clean and little things that help like the freezer and dog poo bags and bin were welcome additions. A highlight was watching the barn owls and other animals in the adjacent fields.

    Disliked:

The only grumble was that the ground tended to be rock hard three inches down, but fortunately our (usually spare) groundhog pegs stood up to the challenge!

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, I'm glad the Owls came out on cue for you , and hope you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you again in the future. Yes the ground is stoney but that's makes the drainage a lot quicker, so your not all pitching in mud.

A great campsite with a friendly owner who went out of her way to come round and make sure everything was ok, it’s a nice clean site, we will definitely return.

    Disliked:

My only negative is that you have to take your own rubbish away with you.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely comments, and look forward to your return, as for rubbish, it's the few disrespectful that made me remove my bins, but anyone who recycles there rubbish I will take it from you.

Location - Nr Flamingo land for the rug rats and the steam railway for us boring oldies.

Local attractions

There's quite a bit to do in the old market town of Pickering a four or five mile walk away: as well as plenty of shops and its Monday market, people also come to see its castle, the Beck Isle Museum and the medieval wall paintings at Pickering Church.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world, trainspotters) starts from Pickering on its beaut run through the moors to Grosmont.

Haugh Rigg Farm has peeps pitching up in an area with plenty of coastal opps too: Flamingo Land is eight miles away, Helmsley 18 and Scarborough 20; if you're off to the coast you'll also likely like a look around Dracula, James Cook and goth centre Whitby.

Must see

  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (3.4 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (3.8 miles)
  • Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo (6.4 miles)
