Green all around

General

  • On a small farm with no passing traffic
  • Walking and biking routes very close by
  • A few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Would you like to pitch up among Pickering peace? Farm the folks (and dog) out to Haugh Rigg Farm four miles from town, set in a peaceful and quiet spot at the end of a small track with no passing traffic – you'll probably already know that splendid North Yorkshire scenery is all around too.

Haugh Rigg is a non-working farm that sees peeps escape to it for a peaceful retreat, as it has walking and biking routes very much nearby – again, probably no need to point out the splendid North Yorkshire scenery... It's only a few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and to yet more hikes and bikes in Dalby Forest.

Amenities include a toilet and shower block, a washing machine, and slides and swings for the kids; a small charge applies for using the showers and the washing machine. Starter packs with wood offcuts, small logs, kindling and firelighters for firepits and barbecues are available to buy on arrival.

And finally, as this is a peaceful and hidden away site, do look at online maps to be sure of where you're going: it's a quiet spot and doesn't shout out its location.

Please note

Group bookings of 5 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

There are no communal bins on the pitching area of the site, as these were misused in previous seasons. Rubbish must be taken home. There is a bin for dog waste bags but they must be tied off before being put in the bin. Household and recycling bins are available for the static caravan.

The showers are charged at either 50p or £1.

Location, lady regularly cleaning throughout the day, friendliness of owner, space for kids to play in the centre of camping field. Small campsite that’s got plenty of space.

    Disliked:

No noise after 10pm sign is great but a no noise before 8am sign would be good too please. Some parents allowed their kids to run about the field shouting at 5.30 am - 6.30 am, which was not fair on other families. I think the majority of the site was awakened and complaining about it. Ruined it for us somewhat, great site aside from that.

Everything. Lorraine’s campsite is excellent. It’s a perfect balance between a rural, peaceful, beautiful setting and easy access to the roads leading to the main attractions in the area. Lorraine herself was a fantastic host, so friendly and approachable. The site is gorgeous surrounded by fields and woodland and all the nature that comes with it including Toffee the rabbit. Our stay coincided with the typical bank holiday weather we all know so well but somehow Lorraine kept the place so spotless I could think the loo floors cleaned themselves. The showers lasted long enough for us all to get washed with time to spare and have plenty of space should you need to accompany your children. Given the WiFi a 5* as there is none meaning our kids went out and played. If you take anything from feedback Lorraine let it be - don’t change a thing what you have created is wonderful. We’ll definitely be back.

Local attractions

There's quite a bit to do in the old market town of Pickering a four or five mile walk away: as well as plenty of shops and its Monday market, people also come to see its castle, the Beck Isle Museum and the medieval wall paintings at Pickering Church.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world, trainspotters) starts from Pickering on its beaut run through the moors to Grosmont.

Haugh Rigg Farm has peeps pitching up in an area with plenty of coastal opps too: Flamingo Land is eight miles away, Helmsley 18 and Scarborough 20; if you're off to the coast you'll also likely like a look around Dracula, James Cook and goth centre Whitby.

Must see

  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (3.4 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (3.8 miles)
  • Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo (6.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (5.3 miles)
