Midsummer Caravan and Camping: Site entrance

General

  • Well-maintained adults-only site in scenic Yorkshire countryside
  • A five-minute drive from local village; 35 to Scarborough; 45 to York
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of the North York Moors

‘The course of true love never did run smooth, but hols at Midsummer Caravan and Camping do’ … is what Shakespeare probably would have said if he’d ever stayed at the adults-only site five minutes’ drive from pretty Yorkshire village Thornton-le-Dale and 10 minutes from Malton.

This is peaceful camping at its best. Not only is it in scenic countryside, it’s a total kid-free zone – there’s a strict over-21s policy, so days spent unwinding won’t be interrupted by hyperactive kids getting underfoot, and all that green space will be left blessedly open for quiet contemplation. Low noise rules apply between 10.30pm and 8am to make sure that staying here is a pleasant experience for all.

Dog parents, on the other hand, can certainly bring their furry kid along for the trip (though no more than one dog is allowed per pitch), and there’s a large field alongside the River Syme for walkies if cabin fever sets in.

If riverside strolls don’t quite cut it, the site’s well placed for longer jaunts: there are a handful of signposted circular walks of varying lengths around Thornton-le-Dale, and North York Moors National Park is less than 20 minutes away for lengthier and more challenging hikes, as well as cycle trails, horse riding and gliding.

Please note

Guests under the age of 21 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Electricity is metered on site at £0.30 per kWh and must be paid at check-out.

Everything about this place...the peace & quiet was lovely as you don't get that at the bigger sites and the cleanliness was second to none. We even played 18 holes on the pitch & putt. Martin & Alison were so friendly & helpful too. We had a lovely relaxing weekend and would recommend this site to anyone. One tip though...the natural spring water wasn't to my taste as it was a bit "eggy", so take bottled water with you. Cannot fault this site at all & will definitely be back 😁

It isn’t clear on information that you can’t bring fire pit or use small bbqs as firepits which would have been a nice touch. Due to size of pitch You can only pitch your tent a certain way therefore not being able to put up porch or awning. Would suit older couples as not much to do on site.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and we hope you enjoyed in the very hot weather.
As explained on arrival we do not allow fire pits out of courtesy to other campers who do not want other peoples fire smoke blowing at them. Also we are in the country where there are crops growing all around and it could present a fire risk. BBQs are allowed to cook food on and this was advised on arrival. I have checked the information on Pitchup and it does say show that fire pits are not allowed but bbqs are. I hope this clarifies this for you.
Tents are now extremely large do sometimes fill the pitches, and no mention of an additional porch or awning was included on your booking information.
Kind regards.

Local attractions

What’s a holiday without sea, sand and (hopefully) sun? Luckily, no one has to find out here: the site’s 35 minutes’ drive from sandy stretches at the seaside resort towns of Scarborough and Whitby, so be sure to pack bucket, spade and (for the brave) a swimming cossie for when beach days beckon.

There’s more to both than splashing about too. History buffs may be drawn to Whitby, where Bram Stoker was inspired to create some of Dracula’s integral scenes and where the stunning Whitby Abbey sits, waiting to be explored. Down the coast, Scarborough has a castle, museums, golf courses and gardens, as well as the Scarborough Fair Collection (plenty of showman’s engines, not so much parsley or sage…).

For more vintage vibes, time stays to coincide with the monthly Mattewsons Classic Car Auction (check dates before travelling), then spend the rest of the hol touring stately piles: Scampston Hall and Gardens is 15 minutes away, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall and Gardens are both within 50 minutes, and the stunningly cinematic Castle Howard is just 20 minutes from the site.

As there are no kids to take care of, the grownups can feel free to spend a few hours touring the Great Yorkshire Brewery (20 minutes away) and the Spirit of Yorkshire single-malt whisky distillery (40 minutes from base) – and making time for a tipple or two – before heading into York (45 minutes) for a night on the town.

Must see

  • Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo (3.0 miles)
  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (3.4 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (5.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (7.6 miles)
  • Nunnington Hall (9.8 miles)
