‘The course of true love never did run smooth, but breaks at Midsummer Caravan and Camping do’ … is what Shakespeare probably would have said if he’d ever stayed at this site five minutes’ drive from pretty Yorkshire village Thornton-le-Dale and 10 minutes from Malton. This is camping at its most peaceful. Not only is the site in scenic countryside, but it is also has a children's playground and lots of open green space. Low noise rules apply between 10.30pm and 8am to make sure that staying here is a pleasant experience for all. Dog parents can certainly bring their furry kid along for the trip (although no more than one dog is allowed per pitch), and there’s a large field alongside the River Syme for walkies if cabin fever sets in. If riverside strolls don’t quite cut it, the site’s well placed for longer jaunts: there are a handful of signposted circular walks of varying lengths around Thornton-le-Dale, and North York Moors National Park is less than 20 minutes away for lengthier and more challenging hikes, as well as cycle trails, horse riding and gliding.

Gostou Pitch is tidy, spacious and site looks nice

Não gostou Absolutely no drinking water despite water sources at every pitch and some of these saying drinking water. Water is cloudy and smells strongly of sulphur. Looking back at website it does say no drinking water and this was something I missed when booking, so thats on me. The facilities were filthy and the water smells so strong its really unpleasant to shower in and leaves a residue on your skin.
When calling to book in Anne was quite abrupt and irritated by the call and was really unhelpful when we called about the water quality and asked if maybe it was contaminated and said it would be looked into but nothing was done.

Gostou Lovely site, great location. Quiet. Good size pitches.

Não gostou Toilets and showers weren’t clean and smelt. The water smelt of egg and wasn’t suitable to drink or wash in.

Gostou Well kept and clean site lovely and flat for the caravan gravel pitches. Play area the children liked.
Midweek lovely and quiet.

Não gostou The water smelled really bad Sulphur eggy. Drank bottled water.
No warden or anything on site there is a grounds keeper / cleaner but hes not a point of contact.
Noisy at weekends till early hours lots of tents. The 10.30 curfew / locked gates non existent.

Gostou Small site with large pitches. Play area for kids.

Não gostou Electric kept on getting turned off through the night. Smell of the water in shower. Entrance and exit to the site. Tight bend, low, rockery that can cause damage to tourers.

Tent area is fully fenced off which I thought was good.

Não gostou Toilets were alrite really but it is right, they do smell.

Grass for tent field was best condition, very bumpy and full of old grass.

Gostou It had electric hook up. Pitches well kept.

Não gostou Water in the showers had an unpleasant smell. No chemical toilet disposal facilities. Showers and toilets seen better days.

Gostou A small site with wide, level pitches. Very tidy and neatly kept site.

Não gostou The showers and toilets badly let this site down. There are only 2 showers and 2 toilets for the whole site which is approx 15 pitches plus tents. Situated in port-a-cabins, up wooden ageing steps and a balcony. The bathrooms were dirty, floors unswept, tiles and sink not clean a rusty shampoo holder in the shower. The showers were either hot or cold, no in between and one shower didn’t have a curtain or screen. We ended up using our own facilities as I couldn’t face it.

What’s a holiday without sea, sand and (hopefully) sun? Luckily, no one has to find out here: the site’s 35 minutes’ drive from sandy stretches at the seaside resort towns of Scarborough and Whitby, so be sure to pack bucket, spade and (for the brave) a swimming cossie for when beach days beckon. There’s more to both than splashing about too. History buffs may be drawn to Whitby, where Bram Stoker was inspired to create some of Dracula’s integral scenes and where the stunning Whitby Abbey sits, waiting to be explored. Down the coast, Scarborough has a castle, museums, golf courses and gardens, as well as the Scarborough Fair Collection of showman’s engines. For more vintage vibes, time stays to coincide with the monthly Mattewsons Classic Car Auction (check dates before travelling), then spend the rest of your break touring stately homes: Scampston Hall and Gardens is 15 minutes away, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall and Gardens are both within 50 minutes, and the stunningly cinematic Castle Howard is just 20 minutes from the site. As there are no kids to take care of, you can feel free to spend a few hours touring the Great Yorkshire Brewery (20 minutes' drive) and the Spirit of Yorkshire single-malt whisky distillery (40 minutes) – and picking up a tipple for later – before heading into York (45 minutes) for a night on the town.
