Midsummer Caravan and Camping: Site entrance

General

  • Well-maintained adults-only site in scenic Yorkshire countryside
  • A five-minute drive from local village; 35 to Scarborough; 45 to York
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of the North York Moors

‘The course of true love never did run smooth, but hols at Midsummer Caravan and Camping do’ … is what Shakespeare probably would have said if he’d ever stayed at the adults-only site five minutes’ drive from pretty Yorkshire village Thornton-le-Dale and 10 minutes from Malton.

This is peaceful camping at its best. Not only is it in scenic countryside, it’s a total kid-free zone – there’s a strict over-21s policy, so days spent unwinding won’t be interrupted by hyperactive kids getting underfoot, and all that green space will be left blessedly open for quiet contemplation. Low noise rules apply between 10.30pm and 8am to make sure that staying here is a pleasant experience for all.

Dog parents, on the other hand, can certainly bring their furry kid along for the trip (though no more than one dog is allowed per pitch), and there’s a large field alongside the River Syme for walkies if cabin fever sets in.

If riverside strolls don’t quite cut it, the site’s well placed for longer jaunts: there are a handful of signposted circular walks of varying lengths around Thornton-le-Dale, and North York Moors National Park is less than 20 minutes away for lengthier and more challenging hikes, as well as cycle trails, horse riding and gliding.

Please note

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, caravan, RV or accommodation hire) traveling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Guests under the age of 21 are not allowed on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Electricity is metered on site at £0.25 per kWh and must be paid at check-out.

The site was lovely, nice and peaceful. A little bit of traffic noise but the location was beautiful and made up for it. The owners were very helpful. I didnt personally use the amenities but my husband did and said they were spot on. Overall a great site and we will return next year. The tent pitches were located with gorgeous views of the countryside and we were able to watch the evening sunset..beautiful.

Well kept beautiful small site perfect for a quiet break away. Owners were very welcoming and friendly. We loved the free golf on site too! The amenities were clean and the grounds were set out brilliantly. We were on a pitch furthest from the toilet but it took less than 2 minutes to walk to the toilet. Magazines and games available to play if you wanted to which was a nice option. The site is well located to explore local towns, we went for a drive into Pickering. The site is small and the fact that it is adults only meant it was perfectly quiet for a peaceful break away. Really felt like a home from home which I never thought I would say about a camping site.

The owners were absolutely brilliant and very very helpful in every way they could, even trying to sort our tv out as we couldn't get it to work. There was artificial grass for us to put down on the gravel in case of wet weather I thought was a very good idea. As we arrived late on the site and it was nearly dark, and we were hungry, she recommended somewhere in Malton that delivered food for £5, which she said they only charge her £1 for and to tell them! The food was excellent and enough to keep us going for 2 days! I would highly recommend the site for its cleanliness and the helpfulness of the owners.

Local attractions

What’s a holiday without sea, sand and (hopefully) sun? Luckily, no one has to find out here: the site’s 35 minutes’ drive from sandy stretches at the seaside resort towns of Scarborough and Whitby, so be sure to pack bucket, spade and (for the brave) a swimming cossie for when beach days beckon.

There’s more to both than splashing about too. History buffs may be drawn to Whitby, where Bram Stoker was inspired to create some of Dracula’s integral scenes and where the stunning Whitby Abbey sits, waiting to be explored. Down the coast, Scarborough has a castle, museums, golf courses and gardens, as well as the Scarborough Fair Collection (plenty of showman’s engines, not so much parsley or sage…).

For more vintage vibes, time stays to coincide with the monthly Mattewsons Classic Car Auction (check dates before travelling), then spend the rest of the hol touring stately piles: Scampston Hall and Gardens is 15 minutes away, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall and Gardens are both within 50 minutes, and the stunningly cinematic Castle Howard is just 20 minutes from the site.

As there are no kids to take care of, the grownups can feel free to spend a few hours touring the Great Yorkshire Brewery (20 minutes away) and the Spirit of Yorkshire single-malt whisky distillery (40 minutes from base) – and making time for a tipple or two – before heading into York (45 minutes) for a night on the town.

Must see

  • Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo (4.9 kilometers)
  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (5.4 kilometers)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (8.3 kilometers)
