Monk's Meadow Glamping: Bell tent in the meadow

General

  • Small peaceful site in Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales
  • Fully-furnished bell tents with private shower room for each pitch
  • Wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Pateley Bridge

Folk with a phobia of bathroom queues, this one’s for you. No standing in line here – each of the fully-furnished bell tents at Monk’s Meadow Glamping has its own private bathroom with shower and toilet.

And a mighty handy thing that is too – being within within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Yorkshire Dales may mean it’s rather tempting to go and get all mucky hiking or walking, especially given that trails run directly from the site. Rural rambles aren’t the only option though, for the site's also about a 15-minute drive from Harrogate and Pateley Bridge, and within easy reach of lots of other Dales attractions.

The site (established for the 2018 season), is a petite and peaceful one, surrounded by farmland and with lots of visiting wildlife; keep your peepers peeled in the early mornings and late evenings in particular to spot deer, hares and red kites.

Adding to that serene vibe is the glamping meadow, kept vehicle-free for maximum safety and peace (parking is available in the adjacent field). Spacious tents have woodburning stoves to keep things toasty on chilly evenings, and are kitted out with bed linen.

You’ll need to bring your own towels and a torch, but you can leave the cooking kit at home, as each tent has its own cooking station just outside the door with a gas hob and grill, and comes with a cooking box filled with crockery, cutlery, pans and all sorts of essentials (including the most vital ones: wine glasses and a corkscrew). If it's a little soggy for alfresco cookery, the communal kitchen's the place to be.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 5 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The bell tent was spacious with everything you could possibly want for a short break provided. The log burner was a real treat, with an honesty box for more kindling, wood and fire starters. We also took advantage of having a bbq (provided, with a bag of charcoal to buy if needed). The private bathroom was nice and clean, and the owner is absolutely lovely.

    Disliked:

It's up in the hills, which led to some windy nights. The wind whipped up and shook the outside of the tent, but it remained cosy inside.

As we approached the site along little lanes, the tents appear to your right, down the hill, across a meadow... and that all there is there, a farm house, and 3 well spaced tents, in the middle of lovely countryside. When you switch off your engine, you are met with an almost deafening silence... absolute bliss!
Our hosts greeted us and gave us a little tour and some local info, pubs, supermarkets, that sort of thing... and then left us to our own devices.
We quickly made ourselves at home, cooking a meal on the provided barbecue, and then as night fell we retired inside to try out the log burner... which we found to be much more efficient than we had imagined, so we were soon very cosy and comfy as we listened to the rather other worldly cries of nearby owls in conversation.
The big double bed was very comfy and we slept well, then in the early morning, while making the short trip to our individually assigned bathroom, for which each tent has its own key, we were treated to another taste of the local wildlife, a female deer and her 2 little ones walking majestically through dew soaked grass in the next field.
A variety of days out are possible from the site as it is perfectly located, 15 minutes drive from Harrogate if you are after a bit of shopping, a walk through the beautiful gardens, or a coffee and a nice bit of cake. As a keen walker, the convenience of the Nidderdale Way path running just past the site entrance, is a joy. Following it either way, or in fact any of the other paths that intersect this bit of countryside, lead to beautiful bits of countryside, and if you are lucky, or well prepared, a few nice pubs and tea rooms.
We will definitely be returning, the whole experience was one that left us relaxed and happy, recharged, ready for our return to suburbia.

Rural location, wood burner, bed and feather duvet. Nice warm adjustable showers. The fact everything is provided. Quiet site with only 3 units. Access to fridge freezer.
Note that the forest shown in the photos has been felled recently, which makes the site more exposed in bad weather but with better views.

    Disliked:

The only issue was that the tent door doesn’t have a horizontal zip or enough groundsheet overlap with the door. It’s the way they’re made, so nothing can be done, but we experienced high winds and needed to be able to shut the door fully to avoid a howling gale and rain inside the tent through this gap. Nonetheless we definitely enjoyed our stay very much. For children it would be better to have more outside space to play, but we knew about this from other reviews when we booked.

Hiking and biking are mighty popular picks around here, with miles of trails to choose from both in the immediate surrounds of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and in the wider Yorkshire Dales National Park. There’s also a splendid seventh-century cathedral half an hour away in Ripon; check out the schedule at Ripon Races too if you fancy a flutter.

For a more adrenaline-fuelled day out, head to Lightwater Valley theme park, 35 minutes away – there are rides here for all the family, including Europe’s longest rollercoaster for those who love a good old scream.
