  • Small peaceful site in Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales
  • Fully-furnished bell tents with private shower room for each pitch
  • Wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Pateley Bridge
Folk with a phobia of bathroom queues, this one’s for you. No standing in line here – each of the fully-furnished bell tents at Monk’s Meadow Glamping has its own private bathroom with shower and toilet. And a mighty handy thing that is too – being within within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Yorkshire Dales may mean it’s rather tempting to go and get all mucky hiking or walking, especially given that trails run directly from the site. Rural rambles aren’t the only option though, for the site's also about a 15-minute drive from Harrogate and Pateley Bridge, and within easy reach of lots of other Dales attractions. The site (established for the 2018 season), is a petite and peaceful one, surrounded by farmland and with lots of visiting wildlife; keep your peepers peeled in the early mornings and late evenings in particular to spot deer, hares and red kites. Adding to that serene vibe is the glamping meadow, kept vehicle-free for maximum safety and peace (parking is available in the adjacent field). Spacious tents have woodburning stoves to keep things toasty on chilly evenings, and are kitted out with bed linen. You’ll need to bring your own towels and a torch, but you can leave the cooking kit at home, as each tent has its own cooking station just outside the door with a gas hob and grill, and comes with a cooking box filled with crockery, cutlery, pans and all sorts of essentials (including the most vital ones: wine glasses and a corkscrew). If it's a little soggy for alfresco cookery, the communal kitchen's the place to be.

Local attractions

Hiking and biking are mighty popular picks around here, with miles of trails to choose from both in the immediate surrounds of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and in the wider Yorkshire Dales National Park. After a long day’s energetic efforts, it’s a splendid idea to swing by the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World, 15 minutes’ drive away in Pateley Bridge. To view fancy buildings on your jaunts, take the half-hour drive to the 11th-century Skipton Castle (one of the best preserved medieval buildings in all the land), or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Studley Royal Water Gardens and Fountains Abbey. There’s also a splendid seventh-century cathedral half an hour away in Ripon; check out the schedule at Ripon Races too if you fancy a flutter. For a more adrenaline-fuelled day out, head to Lightwater Valley theme park, 35 minutes away – there are rides here for all the family, including Europe’s longest rollercoaster for those who love a good old scream.

Hazel bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The location was good and a short drive to Brimham rocks, Pateley Bridge, Ripley etc. There are good views over fields. The Yurt was a good size and waterproof and was well tested by a torrential downpour one night. It was very good having a private bathroom so you can leave you stuff there. A wood burner is provided in the yurt but we did not need it as the bed was comfy and warm. Just outside is a camping stove where you can boil a kettle or a simple pan meal. Only the cooker is covered so make sure you have an umbrella. A torch or two is useful also. There is also a communal kitchen with sink, fridge and freezer in the shower block which is about 50 yards away.

Blackthorn bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: What a wonderful 3 night stay at Monks Meadow. Owners are so friendly and helpful. We loved the farm fresh eggs thank you :). Extra blankets provided on request. The wood burning stove was great, heated up the tent in no time. Lovely site and plenty of room for our family of 4 plus dog. We loved having our own bathroom and all we needed to enjoy our stay. Even wine glasses are provided :). We cooked breakfast and one night had a bbq for our evening meal. Such a lovely peaceful place the views are lovely. We had a great time exploring nearby Knaresborough, National Trust Brimham Rocks and Stump Cross Caverns if any families are looking for things to do they were all great, especially Old Mother Shiptons Cave.

Blackthorn bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Me, my partner and daughter have just spent 2 nights here with teacher strike days. We can honestly say it has been such a lovely break. Barbara the host made sure we was all ok. Had everything we needed. Barbara even brought us some fresh eggs. Her family was also very welcoming. The glamping tents were very spacious. The beds were comfortable. Barbara had outdoor games for children, which me and my daughter took advantage off haha. The BBQ bucket was great. Plenty of utensils to use. One of my favourite things was the fact each of the 3 glamping tents had its own little bathroom a little walk away with shower, sink and toilet. You are given your own key to access your bathroom. The water pressure in the shower was great. Especially if you have longer hair. I can honestly say if you are looking for a lovely peaceful break I would highly recommend this place.

Blackthorn bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Location was stunning

Disliked: Very cold at night, bedding supplied was inadequate for the temperatures at night.
The tents were full of potential, that had not been reached.
Experience was basic camping, well bathrooms were allocated individually. They were still in the bathroom block a distance away. This was the same with all facilities.
The bathroom is the kitchen and access to a fridge brought in a separate block at the top of the field.
The tents had log burners, and you could buy additional wood if required. There were also hot water bottles you could borrow. This highlighted that the owners are very aware of the cold nights and it failed to supply anything other than a very light summer quilt. Taking your own bedding is a must. Also there is one medium size communal fridge so take your name labels.

From the manager: This review is very disappointing, we do try to cover all bases with extra woollen blankets, hot water bottles etc in case of cold nights. If the customer had raised the issue, extra duvets could have been supplied. The temperatures that week were unseasonably low. The communal kitchen and toilet block is no more than 100 yards from the tents. Please read our other reviews we have received to get a balanced view of our site.

Willow bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Small site, was very quiet and peaceful, provided everything we needed including some logs for the log burner, rechargeable lantern, sachets of tea and coffee, washing up bowl and tea towel, toilet roll and hand towel in the private bathroom. Lovely views. 10 minutes from Brimham Rocks.

Disliked: Be nice if they provided breakfast and BBQ packs to order.

Hazel bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Absolutely loved the set up of the very well equipped bell tent with the private bathrooms. Everything was clean and very well thought out and the owners were friendly and available if needed . The log burner has the tent cosy within ten minutes and there was a free starter pack of wood to get you started. Absolutely everything except towels was provided and we even saw a barn owl in the next field .

Disliked: Nothing was to dislike

Blackthorn bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: We loved staying here. They have thought of everything!! The bell tents were really spacious. The bed and bedding felt like good quality. There were chairs and blankets inside the tent too. A couple of books left on the table, a rechargeable lamp, and some biscuits were an added nice tough. They provided camping chairs, some wood for the fire, and you could purchase more if you needed it. All pots, utensils, cooking items, washing up items provided. There was a fridge in the communal kitchen, and charging points. The outdoor cooking area was well organised, and they provided a barbecue for each tent, as well as a cooker. There was also a wooden picnic bench and seats for each tent aswell. You really do only need to take your own towels. Every tent has it's own allocated bathroom with shower, toilet and sink, and a key is provided. This is just your bathroom for the duration of your stay. There are only the three tents, so it was nice and peaceful. I would highly recommend this site, and we will definately be returning in the future - they really have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and stress free. Worth every penny. For anyone wondering, I know we want to 'get away from it all' but the mobile phone signal is great there too, if that is important to you.
