The paths leading from the tents among the wild flower meadow in spring/early summer

General

  • Small peaceful site in Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales
  • Fully-furnished bell tents with private shower room for each pitch
  • Wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Pateley Bridge

Folk with a phobia of bathroom queues, this one’s for you. No standing in line here – each of the fully-furnished bell tents at Monk’s Meadow Glamping has its own private bathroom with shower and toilet.

And a mighty handy thing that is too – being within within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Yorkshire Dales may mean it’s rather tempting to go and get all mucky hiking or walking, especially given that trails run directly from the site. Rural rambles aren’t the only option though, for the site's also about a 15-minute drive from Harrogate and Pateley Bridge, and within easy reach of lots of other Dales attractions.

The site (established for the 2018 season), is a petite and peaceful one, surrounded by farmland and with lots of visiting wildlife; keep your peepers peeled in the early mornings and late evenings in particular to spot deer, hares and red kites.

Adding to that serene vibe is the glamping meadow, kept vehicle-free for maximum safety and peace (parking is available in the adjacent field). Spacious tents have woodburning stoves to keep things toasty on chilly evenings, and are kitted out with bed linen.

You’ll need to bring your own towels and a torch, but you can leave the cooking kit at home, as each tent has its own cooking station just outside the door with a gas hob and grill, and comes with a cooking box filled with crockery, cutlery, pans and all sorts of essentials (including the most vital ones: wine glasses and a corkscrew). If it's a little soggy for alfresco cookery, the communal kitchen's the place to be.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Single-sex bookings of 5 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

    Lovely, peaceful countryside location.

We had a couple of additional needs and they were understood and accomodated without question.

Very friendly and approachable. Lots of space between the tents so not too noisy and felt private.

We had our own, lockable toilet and shower room, which really was nice because then we could leave our towels and toiletries behind. Plus our children are older, and this gave us all a sense of privacy from each other as well.

Cooking options - we used it all! Outdoor gas cooking station; BBQ using responsibly sourced charcoal; and the woodburning stove, which was inside the tent. We used that to make cocoa on the stove while we played games (provided) by torchlight (rechargeble battery-powered lantern provided).

We are quite inexperienced campers and have to admit expecting the countryside to be pretty quiet. It was generally and certainly when we were trying to get off to sleep in the evening. However, it was quite novel waking to the sounds of the countryside. It certainly wasn't quiet in the morning, but it was lovely and a talking point or us all to hear the birds, cows, tractors and machines, dogs and a cockerel!

The night sky at Monk's Meadow Glamping was very dark and excellent for spotting stars. We saw the Milky Way for the first time.

There are so many things to do in the local area. Our top days out were at Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and How Steans Gorge.

This trip was very relaxing and we would definitely recommend it for most people, including those with younger or older children. We will go again!

    Disliked:

Nothing - we enjoyed staying here.

    Peaceful and beautiful location
Only 3 bell tents so perfect getaway without being disturbed by others
    Clean
    Large fully equipped bell tent
    Private bathroom facilities were excellent
Covered cooking facilities outside of the tent were great
Friendly family, came to give us a box of toys when it was raining, took my 2 year old in to see the Cockerel and chickens and gave us an egg they had laid

    Disliked:

The only thing that could have been improved was the walkways from the tents to the bathrooms as it had been raining it was very muddy and slippery however, the owners know this and are due to have flooring laid to stop this happening.

Brilliant location, a bit isolated but within easy reach of Knaresborough, Harrogate, Pateley bridge, Fountains Abbey etc.

    Disliked:

Very small site with no access to surrounding fields as not owned by site.

It rained alot (not site fault) but made access to tents a bit dodgy - son went flying on first night and was covered in mud head to toe - very funny but a bit of bark/shale as a path to the tent from toilet block could have been helpful.

Great glamping experience in a very picturesque area. You really don't need to bring anything except food and toiletries, everything else is provided. Plenty of room in a tent for four, and the beds are made up for you. Our daughter loved feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs. Beautiful local countryside and villages to explore on foot, by bike or by car. Would definitely return.

Local attractions

Hiking and biking are mighty popular picks around here, with miles of trails to choose from both in the immediate surrounds of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and in the wider Yorkshire Dales National Park. After a long day’s energetic efforts, it’s a splendid idea to swing by the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World, 15 minutes’ drive away in Pateley Bridge.

To view fancy buildings on your jaunts, take the half-hour drive to the 11th-century Skipton Castle (one of the best preserved medieval buildings in all the land), or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Studley Royal Water Gardens and Fountains Abbey. There’s also a splendid seventh-century cathedral half an hour away in Ripon; check out the schedule at Ripon Races too if you fancy a flutter.

For a more adrenaline-fuelled day out, head to Lightwater Valley theme park, 35 minutes away – there are rides here for all the family, including Europe’s longest rollercoaster for those who love a good old scream.

Must see

  • Fountains Abbey (7.7 miles)
  • RHS Garden Harlow Carr (7.8 miles)
