  • Small rural East Yorkshire site in the hamlet of Great Hatfield
  • Three miles from the coast at Hornsea; Hull 25 minutes' drive
  • Next to the Trans Pennine Trail for walking and cycling
Heading to Hull, hitting the beach in Hornsea or taking on the Trans Pennine Trail? Whatever it is that brings you to this part of the country, Tower Hill Caravan and Camping makes an excellent base for an East Yorkshire break. This well-kept and peaceful rural site is in the hamlet of Great Hatfield, about three miles from the coast and the seaside town of Hornsea. It’s also got the Trans Pennine Trail passing very close by, so makes a handy place to bed down for a night or two at the start of your walk or bike ride. Tower Hill is a small site but it’s big enough to house a good collection of useful facilities, including a launderette, a washing-up area and toilet/shower facilities. It’s also got a wifi service that comes in particularly handy for planning days out or checking your walking/cycle routes. You’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals here as long as it’s kept off the ground (no campfires though, please, for safety reasons). If you’d like someone else to do the cooking you may like to walk along the trail to the nearest pub, about 45 minutes away, or into Hornsea, an hour away, for pubs, cafés or a fish and chip supper on the beach. Hornsea’s also your nearest place for shops, and has various attractions including Bugtopia Zoo and boating on Hornsea Mere. Hull is about 25 minutes’ drive away for The Deep aquarium and the Streetlife Museum.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Touring pitches are a decent size. Very quiet.

Disliked Didn't see the owner at all during my stay. Phoned him because the signage is so poor. It is only visible if you are travelling from Hornsea. Entrance is in the lay-by at the water tower. Sat nav will take you past the site. Had to contact owner regarding WiFi password. Tried both numbers several times and eventually got through. I did find one very faded sign with the WiFi password, but it's certainly not in an obvious place. The section for tourers is nice, but there is a gravelled incline to the hardstanding which my motor mover and jock wheel struggled with. The area where the site is itself is nice and there is a beautiful outlook, but the surrounding area is very dilapidated and lets it down.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Very quite, large pitches, toilets and showers very clean, nice views.

Disliked When we arrived we were met by the gardener who told us to select any pitch we wanted, the owner/warden NEVER came to give us the wifi code or if we needed anything, only 3 toilets and one shower which cost £1, also no activities, on entry we struggled to find the campsite name as it was on the side road entrance NOT facing the road,

Liked This was a great campsite, with exceptional water & electrics (even for tents) and wonderful bathroom and kitchen facilities that we were very clean and well maintained. The campsite is super close to hornsea as well as hull and has many options for local shops, supermarkets and everything else you may need. The Wifi was even great!

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The pitch was well maintained and freshly mown. The facilities were new and the site appeared to be expanding/ adding to the site. The site was close to Hornsea and 30 minutes from Hull. We would highly recommend a trip to The Deep.

Disliked On arrival there were a lot of tents for the size of the area. If we arrived 30 minutes later we would not have been able to fit. Unfortunately this became another family’s problem- with their tent blowing away in the wind and getting ripped as a result. Luckily the overcrowding only lasted one day before majority of the people left. Despite the toilet block clearly being new it needed more frequent cleaning and new shower curtains as the showers smelt of damp. Some of this was due to not so nice people staying on site and wiping faeces on the wall due to lack of toilet roll. This was not noticed, with me pointing this out several days later to the person cleaning. Bins were not emptied and the main rubbish bin was overflowing leading to bags being on the floor next to it.
The nail in the coffin to our time here were the rats. We were invaded three nights in a row leading to use packing up and leaving two nights early. We did everything we could to deter the rats but were woken in the night with them knocking and moving things in the awning. The rats chewed our footprints and door of the tent causing £100’s of damage. Then on our final evening one gained access to our inner tent running under the carpet. I highly advise things are put in place to help minimise the rats in the area. I am more frustrated that we contacted the site owner and received no response to our message, not even so much as an apology!

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really loved this little site, it was so peaceful, well maintained, with a beautiful view straight out of our motorhome! The toilets, shower block and self use kitchen were immaculate. The owner was friendly and helpful and greeted us on arrival and then showed us to our pitch. Our favourite site we’ve been on in the area so far.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice quiet site, close to the beaches and easy access into Hornsea. Nice warm showers (£1 coins needed) was perfect for what we needed for a weekend away.
First time taking our dog, everyone on site with pets were respectful of the dog on lead rules
Small kitchen area with washing machine and dryer available for a small charge

Disliked Very small tent area, felt a little cramped once it filled up., toilet areas got dirty as the camp got busier but was spotless when we first arrived, shower curtains would benefit a cycle in the washing machine

Local attractions

Hornsea is likely to be your first port of call – you can drive there in about five minutes, walk in 45 or cycle in 20. There’s a lovely sandy beach up here, with plenty of places to pick up fish and chips or ice creams, and several other attractions including Bugtopia Zoo, Honeysuckle Farm and boating on Hornsea Mere. The town is also home to a leisure centre with a swimming pool, and an outlet shopping village. For a wilder stretch of coast, head over to Mappleton beach (five minutes’ drive), or pack your binoculars and make your way to Flamborough Head (45 minutes) to look out for seabirds. To see marine life instead, head into Hull (25 minutes) for a day at The Deep aquarium (the free Streetlife Museum, home to all sorts of old vehicles, is well worth a visit too while you’re there…) Other places to visit in the area include Burton Constable Hall & Grounds (10 minutes) and the lovely town of Beverley (25 minutes), which is full of independent shops.
