- Friendly site with rural views 15 minutes' drive from Consett
- A short walk from the Waskerley Way trail for walking and cycling
- Spacious pitches with access to heated shower block
A warm welcome awaits visitors at Bonners Lodge, where chief of staff Luna the cat oversees a small team of humans, dogs and horses at this friendly family-run site. Officially it’s Ken and Michelle that own the place, but there’s always a helping hand from canine pals Billy and Charlie.
Make the five-minute drive from the A68 and settle yourself into this rural spot for a hefty dose of peace and quiet. Pitches have splendid views over the surrounding farmland and woods, all part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The plots have been deliberately well spaced out to give you plenty of room to breathe, so it may be that your nearest ‘neigh’-bours will be horses Rosie and Rusty in their paddock.
Well-behaved dogs and human folk are invited to join the party on site and explore the miles of walking paths that lie beyond; you need only amble across the adjacent field to join the Waskerley Way railway path, and there are plenty of other places to stretch your legs nearby too. Kids need not even stray very far to let off steam, as they can just wander over to the site’s play area for a bit of swing and slide action.
Everything you need for a comfy stay has been supplied here – each pitch has an electrical hook-up and a TV aerial, and there’s a chemical disposal point close by. A cosy heated shower block was installed in 2017 and includes useful bits and bobs like hairdryers to keep the travelling barnet in check.
If the British weather decrees it possible, you’re welcome to light up a barbie on your pitch, and eat outdoors at the garden table. Should it be less than clement, you may prefer to pile in the car and head out for eats – there’s a country pub serving up traditional fare 10 minutes away, or you could continue on to Consett, 15 minutes away, for an array of pubs, restaurants and takeaway options.
Consett’s also the place to go for stocking up on essentials at the supermarket; for local treats head over to the farm shop in Knitsley, 10 minutes away, to get your paws on all manner of foodie faves including homemade pies and cakes along with top-quality meat, dairy and veg.
The site is next door to the Beamish open-air museum – with 25% off for Bonners Lodge guests.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.

When you turn off the A68 follow the road until you see a stone house in front of you. Follow the road around to the left and the site is 300 yards on the right.
Make the most of your rural location by getting your walking boots on or jumping on your bike to hit the trails that criss-cross this beaut area. Getting to the Waskerley Way requires you only to cross one adjacent field, and then you can join this route across the moors, past the Waskerley and Smiddy Shore reservoirs and to the imposing Hownsgill Viaduct, towering 46 metres above the woodland canopy.
Other fab walks can be had around Derwent Reservoir, 20 minutes away, and you can dangle a rod into the water here too, to see if you can snag one of the lake’s trout; rumour has it they can weigh up to 20lb. Cyclists, meanwhile, can find some great woodland routes at Hamsterley Forest, 50 minutes away, or get their pulses racing on the downhill tracks at Descend Bike Park, a 25-minute drive away.
There are tons of family-friendly attractions around here, too. You could head to Hall Hill Farm, 15 minutes away, for lots of furry fun riding the donkeys, feeding the llamas and watching the sheep race, or you could take a trip on the steam trains of Weardale Railway, 25 minutes away. Also 25 minutes away is Diggerland Durham, where kids of all ages (even ones who sometimes claim to be grownups) can drive lots of different fun vehicles including go-karts, 4x4s and of course the diggers themselves.
Take a step back in time at Beamish Museum, half an hour away – the open-air living museum been set up as a recreation of an early 20th-century town complete with tramway, shops and a colliery to explore. Another half-hour drive from the site takes you to Auckland Castle, where you can wander around the deer park, see traditional skills in action and maybe catch one of the spectacular historical shows that are held in the open-air theatre on summer nights.
