Bonners Lodge: View from the back of the park

General

  • Friendly site with rural views 15 minutes' drive from Consett
  • A short walk from the Waskerley Way trail for walking and cycling
  • Spacious pitches with access to heated shower block

A warm welcome awaits at Bonners Lodge, where chief of staff Raffi the cat oversees a small team of humans, dogs, horses, pygmy goats, alpacas, a donkey and a Shetland pony at this friendly family-run site. Officially it’s Ken and Michelle that own the place, but there’s always a helping hand from canine pals Sam, Bess and Charlie…

Make the five-minute drive from the A68 and settle yourself in for a hefty dose of peace and quiet: pitches have splendid views over the surrounding farmland and woods, all part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The plots have been deliberately well spaced to give you plenty of room, so it may be that your nearest ‘neigh’bours will be horses Rosie and Rusty in their paddock.

Well-behaved dogs and human folk are invited to explore the miles of walking paths that lie beyond; you need only amble across the adjacent field to join the Waskerley Way. Kids need not even stray very far to let off steam, as they can just wander over to the site’s play area for a bit of swing and slide action.

Everything you need for a comfy stay has been supplied here – a cosy, heated and modern shower block includes useful bits and bobs like hairdryers to keep the travelling barnet in check.

Please note

Facilities/activities including Washing machine & tumble dryer are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

    Hi

Just back from Bonners Lodge, had a lovely couple of days on site whilst traveling back from Scotland. I must say that it was one of the nicest sites for facilities that we have ever stayed at the showers and toilets were more like you would find in a hotel rather than a campsite. There was also a kitchen and games room which had full facilities cooker, microwave, fridge and freezer. It also had table tennis, pool, TV and DVD player if you wanted to use them as well as books and games to borrow. After a late arrival Ken showed me to my pitch and gave a full tour of the site it's facilities etc, this was at 9 O'clock. The next day we were greeted by the site of two alpacas being lead around the pitches for the campers to meet, followed by a couple of pigmy goats it was great.

Wow. What a great site. Fabulous location, very friendly site. The pitches were well spaced out. The shower and toilet facilities were very clean and spacious. There is also a family/games room which can be booked out (as per COVID) rules which has various games, TV and cooking facilities. There are lots of animals to see and admire, horse, pony, pigmy goats, alpacas etc. The motorhome/caravan site has many sculptures carved out of wood dotted around - they are captivating and really stunning. Ken, Michelle and Lyn made us very welcome. We would have no hesitation in recommending this site.

Such a warm welcome from Ken and Michelle! The facilities ( shower and loo) are spotlessly clean, and the games room / kitchen are fabulous for things to keep anyone busy.
The site is well maintained and spacious with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside.

I struggled with getting my awning pegs in the ground as the grass is over some rocky patches - but this would be remedied if I’d had stronger pegs for such an eventuality. Learning opportunity for me!

What a beautiful little camp site and a great set up with immaculate toilet/shower block /games room , we were made to feel very welcome . I think the owner went above and beyond to make my little girl happy with a donkey ride , goat walk and even brought the alpacas to us on the morning for her to stroke.
The site is quiet with plenty of space between caravans/ motohomes with your own little picnic table area. I would 100% recomend this site and will definitely be returning in the future

Well what can we say about this beautiful little campsite! Honestly could not have asked for more!
An extremely well run site with fabulous owners!
The camp is a lovely intimate size and just what we look for when booking our base for our holiday.
We stayed with our 4 teenage sons on one pitch and our daughter, partner and grandson on the pitch next to ours (the owners kindly put us together after we requested to be together at time of booking)
We just got home this evening and we all cant stop talking about our holiday which was just made perfect by how lovely Bonners Lodge was.
The site so peaceful with beautiful surroundings. On site are alpacas, pygmy goats and Ray the donkey.
Such a lovely touch that some animals are walked over to visit young children at their caravans. Our Grandson fell in love with Ray the donkey who he got to have some rides on - so much so that he was got upset on the morning we left after his last ride!!!
The toilets/showers are the best we have come across on our travels. Absolutely spotless and clean throughout our whole week. I mean - even a hairdryer on the wall which is a great idea!
We were provided with lovely bath mats to use when stepping in and out of the shower that were ours for the duration of our stay to use each time we showered.
The games room was a big hit with the whole family which you book time in by writing in a schedule book in the games room which we did several times for several hours of fun on some evenings. Pool table, table tennis table, table football, TV and copious amounts of toys and games at your disposal. Its brilliant!
in a corner of the games room is also pot washing facilities to use if needed and a a microwave, fridges etc all free to be used for all campers.
The pitches are very spacious and lovely and level - there is a review here in the last few days that the pitches are not level and hard to get into.
This is nonsense as we were there when this camper arrived and my husband had to help him get his caravan in his space after watching him messing it up over and over.
My husband did it straight away for him first time with no trouble.
I sense that the unfair review was a result of dented male pride and lack of experience or even just plain uselessness!
Very unfair to take that out on a superb campsite such as this.
A bad review can damage a business which is justified if there really is an issue but when it is because of your own inadequacies then you should think twice before leaving a bad review.
My advice if you are debating staying here, is to read all the other reviews which are all just as glowing as mine - and you should realise what a lovely place this is!
I defy anyone to not fall in love with this place! We didn't want to go home!
We are super glad we found this little gem!
Thank you so much for making our holiday so super! :)
    Laura & Jon

Our hosts were extremely welcoming and friendly, the site facilities extremely clean and well maintained.
The site is perfect to relax, watch spectacular sunsets, listen to nature and enjoy fresh air away from any hustle and bustle.
The site has several rescued animals all of which my children had the opportunity to enjoy from walking the goats to having the alpacas greet them during breakfast.
Michelle, Ken and Lynn were not only welcoming but also have the personal touch - for example providing each pitch with shower mats to use during their stay.
A site we will highly recommend but will also visit again.

Local attractions

Make the most of your rural location by getting your walking boots on or taking to your bike to hit the trails that crisscross this scenic area. Getting to the Waskerley Way requires you only to cross one adjacent field, and then you can join this route across the moors, past the Waskerley and Smiddy Shore reservoirs and to Hownsgill Viaduct, towering 46 metres above the woodland canopy.

Other fab walks can be had around Derwent Reservoir, 20 minutes away; you can dangle a rod into the water here too, to see if you can snag one of the lake’s trout (rumour has it they can weigh up to 20lb). Cyclists, meanwhile, can find some top routes at Hamsterley Forest 25 minutes away, or get their pulses racing on the downhill tracks at Descend Bike Park (25 minutes).

For family-friendly attractions, head to Hall Hill Farm 15 minutes away, for lots of furry adventures riding the donkeys, feeding the llamas and watching the sheep race, or take a trip on the steam trains of Weardale Railway, 25 minutes away. Within the same distance is the famed Beamish open air museum: bag 25% discount tickets for this before setting off from the Bonners Lodge team.

Also 25 minutes away is Diggerland Durham, where kids of all ages (even ones who sometimes claim to be grownups) can drive lots of different vehicles… and take lots of pics of them doing so too.
