  • Grass pitches at a Suffolk working cattle farm, with dogs welcome
  • Southwold, Walberswick and RSPB Minsmere within 15 minutes' drive
  • Just off the A12, a couple of minutes' walk from an artisan bakery
If what you seek is a Suffolk site with both rural outlook and supremely simple transport options, Peacock Farm Paddock could well be the place for you. Pitches here are within the grounds of a working farm, so you’ll be looking out over a grassy field – but you’ll also be just off the A12 for easy road trips. And if you’d rather get about by public transport? That’s possible too, with Darsham railway station just over a mile away (about 15 minutes’ walk). And with public footpaths just by the site, you can head out to explore the area on foot without any issue, too. All of this means that this is a most handy location for days out along the Suffolk coast – Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich are within a 15-minute drive, and it’s only a little further to birdwatching exploits at RSPB Minsmere. It’s not just the transport options that are convenient here, either: a couple of minutes’ walk gets you to an artisan bakery and café for a tasty start to the morning, and there’s a garage/shop a mile away for any other bits you might need. Back at base, barbecues and campfires are both permitted, and there are simple facilities in the form of portable toilets in the field.

Local attractions

All set for a day at the beach? National Trust-owned Dunwich beach is your closest (10 minutes’ drive), and a lovely place for a walk, a paddle or a bit of sea fishing. Also close by are Walberswick, for a stroll through the heathland and sand dunes, and Southwold, home to Adnams brewery tours and an excellent pier. Both are about 15 minutes away. If it’s wildlife-spotting that entices you out into the open air, you should find plenty of that at RSPB Minsmere nature reserve (20 minutes). Meanwhile, bigger, more exotic beasts can be spied on a tour of Africa Alive! animal park (20 minutes). And who knows what you might spot at Rendlesham Forest (25 minutes) – there are several walking trails here, including one that leads to a suspected UFO landing site… For other days out, a couple of handy spots to have up your sleeve are the 12th-century Framlingham Castle (20 minutes), a classic castle with a colourful past, and the East Anglia Transport Museum (25 minutes), where you can board a vintage tram and see all sorts of heritage vehicles.
