  • Spacious pitches in a Suffolk meadow of wild grasses and flowers
  • Aldeburgh and Framlingham Castle within a 15-minute drive
  • Easy access to the A12; barbecue/firepit provided for each pitch
Splendid Suffolk simplicity as it should be… that’s what you’ll find at Red House Farm Camping, in a rural spot five minutes’ drive from Saxmundham. The site here is within the grounds of a luxury B&B that’s the pride and joy of owners Michelle and Robbie. They’ve given great thought to the camping aspect of their business too, cutting roomy pitches into their six-acre wild meadow so that guests and native wildlife can exist in harmony with each other. Settle in here and you’ll be surrounded by native grasses and wildflowers that form a natural habitat for insects and other tiny beasts. The field also has a natural pond where you’re likely to spot things like newts, frogs and other water-based wildlife. A barbecue/firepit is available for each pit, and you’ll also have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up station. In general this is a relaxed rural site, but it’s worth noting that it’s just off the A12 so some traffic noise will be heard. The trade-off for that is easy access to the road for days out by the seaside in the likes of Aldeburgh, Southwold or RSPB Minsmere, or visits to other attractions like Framlingham Castle, Africa Alive! or Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park.

Local attractions

Setting off for the seaside should be easy from here, whether you fancy some time in arty Aldeburgh (15 minutes’ drive), a stroll along the pier and a brewery tour in Southwold (25 minutes) or trying your luck with a bit of crabbing in Walberswick (20 minutes). Birdwatchers should bring their binoculars along too for a trip to RSPB Minsmere (15 minutes) in search of bitterns, marsh harriers and other water-loving birds. Away from the coast, head inland for a bit to visit Framlingham Castle (15 minutes) to walk around the well-preserved walls and sing a bit of Ed Sheeran (‘Castle on a Hill’ was penned with this place in mind). Orford Castle makes another great outing, as does a walk along the UFO Trail in Rendlesham Forest (both 20 minutes). If you’ve got kids to entertain, a few good options to have up your sleeve include Camel Park Oasis (20 minutes), Africa Alive! animal park (half an hour) and the various rides and shows of Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (40 minutes).
