  • Back-to-basics wild camping in scenic Suffolk countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from Southwold and 35 minutes from Ipswich
  • Africa Alive, Oasis Camel Park and Sutton Hoo within a 25-minute drive
Looking for a back to basics getaway without all the unnecessary extras? Keep it simple at Orchard Wild Camping, a particularly well-named family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the small Suffolk town of Saxmundham and around 15 minutes from Aldeburgh and Southwold. The clue is in the name here: this is proudly wild camping where everything's off grid and as nature intended, giving guests lots of space and scope for no-frills stays. There’s a bowser full of water for cooking and washing (drinking water must be bought, but the first bottle will be provided), and a firepit is at each pitch for toasty times and chatty evenings. There is a shower but it's worth noting that it's solar powered and therefore at the mercy of the elements (on some days it may only be for the brave…) Nature-filled hols can extend beyond the limits of the site if so desired: it's about five minutes from here to the edge of Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), putting guests in a prime location for lengthy coastal walks, quiet cycles down country lanes and wildlife spotting. The site is also 20 minutes from RSPB Minsmere (which falls within the AONB) for an afternoon of birdwatching; more animals can be spotted at Africa Alive, 25 minutes from base, and the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary about half an hour away. Getting out and about should be easy as the site is handily located just off the A12.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Lovely meadow setting with pleasant secluded areas with seating and firepit. Clean toilets and basic supplies available.

Disliked: Running drinking water (rather than bottled) would be a bonus.

Liked: Enjoyed the stay, great site. Pitches are well thought out & owner manger is helpful, patient and knowledgeable. If you are from New Zealand or the Southern parts Africa its has similar feel to some the campsites there. Would recommend more than 1 night to give you a chance explore local area.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Just got back from a 1 night stay as a tester of camping with my learning difficulties. Nice enclosed pitches that are well maintained. Each has a fire pit and chairs and some a picnic bench and BBQ. You get basic portaloo and a solar shower We had great communication with Simon, the owner, before hand, which made everything effortless. I'd definitely recommend this as a site.

Disliked: Close to A12 so you do get some background road noise, but it's not a negative, just something to be mindful of if it's likely to bother you

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: The campsites are really well laid out, with lots of nooks and clearings between the trees. Lots of privacy if you want it. And all the garden furniture was really helpful. In addition to the fire pit, our pitch had a picnic table with umbrella, a BBQ, two plastic chairs, and a bench. There was also a helpful clothesline attached to the tree. Great comunication from Simon and he met us after we arrived and welcomed us.

Disliked: As others have mentioned, the road noise from the A12 can be quite constant, even at night. You do get used to it after a while but it's definitely not silent. However, because of the general background noise, it does mean that you don't notice other camper conversations as much. Also, the shower wasn't cold but I wouldn't call it hot either. Maybe I did something wrong, but the temperature on the boiler only ever said 15-16C. It was enough to wash your head and face and do a quick wake up splash.

Liked: Nice place for camping, very good size of the pitch and private enough. Simon is very friendly and take care of the place very good. Full of blackberries, birds singing, little bunnies. We weren’t very lucky with the weather but enjoyed our stay anyway.

Liked: This place is the best campsite I’ve been to. Each pitch is like your very own little secret garden. The host was super friendly and super helpful! The set up was great, benches, bbq, fire pit. Beautiful near by villages to explore untouched by the likes of Starbucks and costa. Happy days! Will definitely be returning. Could not recommend enough!

Liked: This was my grandson's first camping experience, he really enjoyed it. Nice private pitches with BBQ and campfire pit at pitch. Wood/kindling available on site for a fee. Warm welcome from owner. Toilets and shower were clean. Will visit again. A very enjoyable two days!

Disliked: Slight road noise. Could do with some kind of marker to show turning as not that visible from the road.

Local attractions

To make beach days part of your stay, it’s just 15 minutes' drive from the site to the seafront stretch of Aldeburgh, 20 minutes to Southwold and a little under 40 to Lowestoft. Early birds and adrenaline junkies might want to flap along to the latter – Lowestoft is the first place in the UK to see the sun rise every morning, and it’s also home to the rides and games of Pleasurewood Hills. Meanwhile, fans of traditional British seaside towns with candy-coloured beachfronts and restored Victorian piers might wish to opt for the first two instead. There’s history hereabouts too: the spectacularly sprawling Somerleyton Hall is just outside Lowestoft (and 45 minutes from base), and jousts at Framlingham Castle, clambers around the tower keep of Orford Castle, seeing the unusual 'House in the Clouds' water tower and visits to the famed Anglo-Saxon royal burial site of Sutton Hoo are between 15 and 25 minutes away. When rural rambles, seaside strolls and historical haunts are finally exhausted, there are museums, mansions and shops to explore 35 minutes from the site in Ipswich, and even busier city days within relatively easy reach an hour away in Norwich.
