  • Grass touring pitches on a farm near the Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • A 15-minutes drive to Southwold beach; 20 minutes to Walberswick
  • Peacocks and playground on site; shops and pubs five minutes’ drive
Not sure whether you’d prefer your caravanning break on a farm or by the sea? If that’s the case, your luck’s in, as White House Farm Caravan Site will satisfy both requirements. With level grass pitches in a huge field sheltered by trees, the touring site is set on a working farm just five minutes’ drive from the scenic Suffolk Heritage Coast. After you’ve introduced yourself to the farm’s resident peacocks, it’s time to explore your immediate surroundings on foot. Plenty of farm walks start right at the camping field – useful for exercise if you’ve brought the dogs with you – and these in turn feed into a local network of footpaths. If you’d rather leave the wheels at home, you can walk to dog-friendly Kessingland beach in 45 minutes for a day of paddling, swimming and windsurfing. The village of Kessingland (five minutes’ drive) is the spot for picking up food supplies, but if you’d rather abandon the kitchen for a while, there are plenty of options, from fast-food to pubs and fish-and-chip shops in local villages, with more choices in Lowestoft (10 minutes). Back at the pitches, facilities include electric hook-ups, a well-maintained shower block (soap, sanitising gel and toilet rolls are all provided), a washing-up sink and a play area for the kids to have a run around. Fresh water points and waste bins are also found at points around the camping field. Please note that a maximum of two adults and four children are permitted per caravan.

Electric grass touring caravan pitch

Liked: Great little site perfect for just getting away. The washroom and facilities on site were very clean and tidy. The lady June that runs the place was very friendly and helpful and was nice to check in make sure you have everything you need. We only stayed for a short weekend to enjoy the weather we had and after a long stay at a big holiday site a couple of weekend ago this was a nice quite/chilled out site that we wanted to just relax for the weekend and go out for the day. Will definitely be staying again when we want a nice little get away again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike if you want a nice quite get away.

Electric grass touring caravan pitch

Liked: Peacocks were lovely, walking around the caravan several times a day. Shower and toilet block very clean if a little tired. Farm wasn't noisy so all good there and fields all round for dog walks. Beach is about a 10 minute drive to Kessingland. Shops are about the same distance in both directions. The lady met us later that evening was very welcoming and informative and said they had taken it over and had been running for forty years, I feel it needs a little work to make it a bit more tidy.

Disliked: I have to say that I was disappointed, the site was split into two. One side we were told was for people who paid to have a caravan there all year round and they come and go as they please, fair enough. The side we were told to stay was pretty empty apart from several really old, extremely dirty old caravans. We could go where we wanted as it wasn't very busy by then but we felt like we were in a caravan grave yard. It was a storage field but the Van's weren't being kept clean and had been there for some time as they were green and grimy, not a particularly nice place if you have a touring caravan on holiday. Electric point had a light but it was all very old and broken.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. It was lovely to hear that you found us to be very welcoming. We were, however, very disappointed with your score of 2/10, which is, in our opinion, not an accurate representation of our Site. Our location is clearly stated on the website - on a field on a working farm with close connections to Southwold, Lowestoft, Aldeburgh, Beccles and is ideally placed for holidays near to the sea and the Broads. As for value for money, the vast majority of our customers love our Site and some have already stayed here twice this season. Therefore, we do think that this shows our Site offers value for money. As we don't offer accommodation, we are puzzled as to how this can be reviewed. It is clear on the website that we don't have a wide range of facilities, or offer any activities, as we are a quiet, rural Site, surrounded by fields. Our storage caravaners are able, like Tourers, to stay on Site when we're open, typically, between, April and September. They book their stay, like Tourers, though they do so directly. We keep two separate areas as it's easier for the Site to work that way. As for saying our shower and toilet block are a little tired, we would, of course, disagree and no-one else staying this year has referred to them as such. They are located in an old farm building and so, we think, have a certain charm and were freshly decorated at the beginning of the season. If anyone has said anything, it's to say how lovely it was that they were so clean and fresh, with lots of hot water. We do, however, acknowledge that there are a couple of caravans which, with their appearance, let the Site down. They are scheduled to be removed by the time we open for Tourers next year. Incidentally, as you were the last Tourers of the season, I did offer you a space in the storage caravan section, but you decided to stay in the location of your choice, located near those caravans shown in your photo. (The grass does not usually look like this, but the extremely hot weather of this summer have the overall appearance of the field.) I'm glad you found that the electric point and light were working satisfactorily. I hope your next site proved to be more suitable.

As well as the sand and shingle expanse at Kessingland (five minutes’ drive), you can pick and choose from beaches at Lowestoft (10 minutes), Corton (20 minutes) and Southwold (15 minutes). Other pursuits in the open air include hiking at Carlton Marshes Suffolk Wildlife Trust (10 minutes) and in Dunwich Forest, or pottering around Walberswick harbour (both 20 minutes). You can grab a pair of binoculars to watch migratory birds in the seafront lagoons of Benacre National Nature Reserve (10 minutes), and there’s more birdwatching action just down the road at RSPB Minsmere (half an hour). A couples of suggestions for educational days out include the collection of vintage aircraft at Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum (half an hour) or WWII memorabilia at The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (45 minutes). If the kids behave in the face of all this history, treat them to a day watching comical lemurs at Africa Alive Zoological Reserve (five minutes), or let them chase around in the Southwold Maize Maze (15 minutes, seasonal).
