- Set in 87 acres of Suffolk parkland on the banks of the Orwell river
- On Shotley Peninsula, 10 minutes’ drive to Felixstowe foot ferry
- In the ground of Woolverstone Hall, firepits and kindling available
A gorgeous setting in the grounds of a Grade 1 listed mansion. Tick. Seaviews. Tick. Beaches close by. Tick. Back-to-basics Popcorn Camping at Woolverstone Hall has quite a location in a secluded Suffolk field surrounded by mature trees and overlooked by a small church.
Kids can run around freely (and safely) on the massive camping field, and there’s 87 acres of Suffolk parkland to explore before you even leave the site. The sea is close by too; walk down to the banks of the Orwell river in less than 15 minutes, where a pub near Woolverstone Marina serves the freshest of seafood alongside Suffolk ales.
The Shotley Peninsula sits in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a peaceful corner of East Anglia with shingle beaches and heathland along the estuaries. Outdoor adventures might include playing golf, learning to sail or simply pottering along the river banks. Popular seaside Aldeburgh is less than 50 minutes’ drive away, a cute little town for afternoon jaunts around arty shops.
Back at base, a couple of camp rules: dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a leash. Barbecues are allowed next to your tent as long as they are off the ground. Hire firepits and buy kindling on site, while grass protection boards are supplied for free (these must be used). And there’s quiet time between 10:30pm and 8am, please, so you’ll all get a good night’s sleep.

Life revolves around water in these parts. As well as sailing lessons from Woolverstone Marina (15 minutes’ walk, booking advised), you can waterski on Alton Water (15 minutes’ drive) or explore any number of wetlands along the coastline by canoe. The foot ferry at Shotley Gate (10 minutes) is the jumping off point for days on Felixstowe’s North Sea beach.
Even much of Suffolk’s cuisine comes from the sea too. Take the chance to sample seafood (go on, try the oysters) at traditional pubs and posh restaurants, or head for the pier at seafront Aldeburgh (50 minutes) for delicious fish and chips.
Birdwatchers, Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (an hour) is the spot for you. Marsh harriers and barn owls are regular visitors, and in spring, you might just get to spot brown hares boxing on the beach. And inland, more reliable sightings of wildlife come at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park (20 minutes), where animal encounters include wallaby safaris and donkey feeding.
