Life revolves around water in these parts. As well as sailing lessons from Woolverstone Marina (15 minutes’ walk, booking advised), you can waterski on Alton Water (15 minutes’ drive) or explore any number of wetlands along the coastline by canoe. The foot ferry at Shotley Gate (10 minutes) is the jumping off point for days on Felixstowe’s North Sea beach. Even much of Suffolk’s cuisine comes from the sea too. Take the chance to sample seafood (go on, try the oysters) at traditional pubs and posh restaurants, or head for the pier at seafront Aldeburgh (50 minutes) for delicious fish and chips. Birdwatchers, Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (an hour) is the spot for you. Marsh harriers and barn owls are regular visitors, and in spring, you might just get to spot brown hares boxing on the beach. And inland, more reliable sightings of wildlife come at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park (20 minutes), where animal encounters include wallaby safaris and donkey feeding.
