  • Wet weather facilities including games barn and picnic tables
  • Modern amenities block with underfloor heating
Owners Maria and Guy at The Croft Campsite in East Anglia know what makes guests tick: they've added heaps of little touches to this popular little site a short drive from the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Opened in 2016, The Croft is a small family-run countryside site with a friendly vibe, high-quality amenities and loads of room to play. It's in the village of Ubbeston, near the market towns of Framlingham and Halesworth, and a couple of miles from the pubs and supermarket in the village of Laxfield. Help yourself to a tea, coffee or squash when you arrive, then set up in this pleasant spot; the owners are always around if you need any help. And then investigate your surroundings: The Croft has a big field for football, kite flying and general running around, and a barn kitted out with ping pong tables, table football and ride-on toys. The Cart Lodge is a communal space with picnic tables for dining away from your pitch. Four-legged guests can dash about at the dog run area, which stretches to a third of an acre, while kids spend some time on the traverse wall and wooden adventure trail at the outdoor playground. Barbecues are held here on Fridays, egg, bacon or sausage rolls are generally available on Sundays, and croissants and pain au chocolat can be ordered every morning. There's no shop, but camping essentials like torches and batteries are available for sale. Other facilities include a well-kept toilet and shower block, washing-up facilities, chemical disposal and a washing machine and dryer. The owners are happy to charge mobile phones and battery packs for free. The nearest town to the site is Halesworth, a scenic 15-minute drive away.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Toilet and shower blocks very well maintained Peaceful location BBQ nights Lots of play area for children

Disliked: Perhaps more distance between pitches as those in the field behind were quite noisy until very late at night

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Brilliant site, friendly owners, Fridays BBQ was excellent. Facilities are great. Pitch was huge, only 5amps so no kettle this weekend. Loved the fire pit hire. Phone signal (EE) not great but makes appreciate the site more.

Disliked: And not the sites fault, some parents don't educate their kids in respect of others property. The barn was trashed, straw pulled out everywhere and damage to the games barn done with footballs.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: This is our second visit and we’ve been impressed by the cleanliness and good maintenance both times. There is plenty for the children to do, in a pleasant environment, with good access to local tourist spots. The toilets/showers are some of the nicest we’ve seen in a campsite.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The organised and spacious pitch layouts. Extra areas especially for children's and family play. Undercover eating area with many fridges/freezers for campers to use. Many clean toilets and showers and adequate lighting to get to them at night. Camp ethos and friendly atmosphere of respect for privacy and quiet after dark, fostered by the organisationof the site. Nice enclosed area for dogs. Camp fire availability. Friday barbeque, pastries and Sunday bacon!

Disliked: That some campers and/or their children weren't so attentive to cleaning up after themselves, but the staff attend to this frequently. It's just a shame.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great campsite with good facilities. Very well run and owners can’t do enough to help!

Disliked: Had to buy wood on site which we weren’t aware of.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry that you were not aware that you had to buy wood for the firepit. It does state this on the Pitchup site. There was a link in the confirmation email from us also taking you to the bit about firepits saying ‘ Only our wood can be burnt on the site - this is due to stipulations from our insurance company and also the selling of wood helps to cover the increased cost of our insurance to allow you to have fires.’ Anyway despite this we are so happy that you thought our campsite was ‘great’ and we do hope that you will visit us again. Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Firstly, Maria & Guy are fantastic hosts, we had a very warm welcome for my son and I and check in was easy. Free tea and coffee in the reception area, lots of information for local attractions, walks and pubs too. The facilities are really good. Spotlessly clean toilet and shower block, look brand new. The barn is a great place to hang out. We had the BBQ on Friday night which I would highly recommend. The campsite location is great for exploring nearby villages (Laxfield, Stradbroke, Cratfield, Huntingfield & Fressingfield, some of the villages we visited). Also 30 mins drive from Southwold on the coast. I highly recommend The Croft Campsite, we will be back for sure.

Local attractions

The Croft Campsite has easy access to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the river estuaries of the Blythe, Alde, Deben, Orwell and Stour. Get out into Suffolk for its famed beaches, rivers and peaceful roads – this county has the lowest rainfall in the UK too, always a plus for an outdoor break… About 30 minutes' walk away (or a two-mile drive) is the ancient village of Laxfield, reachable via a riverside walk along the Blythe from Ubbeston. Have a sup in one (both?) of its two pubs (beer is still tapped directly from the barrel in one and food is served in the other), then have a wander around the museum in the 16th-century Guildhall, open at weekends in summer. Day trips and wanders around Suffolk attractions and towns are easily accessed from the site: Framlingham and its castle overlooking the mere (do take a wander around the ramparts); Orford with English Heritage keep, boat trips along the River Alde and Orfordness-Havergate National Nature Reserve and lighthouse, and Minsmere, home to the coastal, woodland, wetland and heathland habitats of RSPB Minsmere.
