General

  • Family-run site opened in 2016, near the Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • Wet weather facilities including games barn and picnic tables
  • Modern amenities block with underfloor heating

Owners Maria and Guy at The Croft Campsite in East Anglia know what makes guests tick: they've added heaps of little touches to this smashingly popular little site a short drive from the Sussex Heritage Coast.

Opened in 2016, The Croft is a small and family-run countryside site with a friendly vibe, high-quality amenities and loads of room to play. It's in the village of Ubbeston, near the market towns of Framlingham and Halesworth, and a couple of miles from the two pubs and supermarket of the village of Laxfield. Scenic strolls can be had along the streaming remains of the River Blyth from Ubbeston to Laxfield.

Help yourself to a tea, coffee or squash when you arrive, then set up camp in this green and pleasant setting; the owners are always around if you need any help. And then investigate your surroundings: The Croft has a big field for football, kite flying and general running around under the skies, and a barn kitted out with three table tennis tables, table football, ride-on toys for wet weather days under canvas. The Cart Lodge is a sheltered communal space with picnic tables so you can still have dinner away from your pitch if you want.

Barbecues are held on site on Fridays, tasty egg, bacon or sausage rolls are generally available on Sundays, and croissants and pain au chocolat can be ordered every morning. There's no shop, but camping essentials like torches and batteries are available for sale from Maria and Guy.

Other Croft facilities include a modern and well-kept toilet and shower block, washing-up facilities, chemical disposal and a washing machine and dryer. The owners are happy to charge mobile phones and battery packs for free.

A well-stocked supermarket, hardware store and a post office are nearby at Laxfield; the nearest town from the site is Halesworth, via a scenic drive passing Heveningham Hall.

Absolutely wonderful time. A lovely warm welcome, bbq cooked for us with lots of delicious food, feels extremely safe so boys free to wander off and explore alone, beautiful walk along a stream, toasted marshmallows around the fire bowl and a yummy cooked breakfast before we came home. Toilets and showers were immaculately clean and had underfloor heating. We all enjoyed a family game of table tennis and table football in the barn. Maria and Guy do a fantastic job. We will definitely be returning. Felt like we were staying with friends. Thank you.

    Disliked:

Nothing. It was all perfect. Can't think of any areas that require improvement.

A very pleasant rural location generally with families camping in well spaced and adequately sized pitches. Offering everything we needed along with very amenable hosts keen to offer help. Optional fire pits were a hit with most campers, great for sitting round and toasting marshmallows.

    Disliked:

Designated pathways could be kinder to soft soled flip flops and the like. The surfaces being re-used road planings. I noted I wasn't alone in not using these when there were grass alternatives. A minor comment really but relevant when making your way to the shower block.

From the manager...

We're glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry about your feet!

A lovely site with fantastic hosts. Very welcoming and always keen to make a stay a good one.

    Disliked:

Lots of children due to school holidays (I am a teacher so have to take my holidays in school holidays) Not all parents take responsibility for their children and two of the nights there were children making a lot of noise until 10 pm - May be need site rule about children running around being loud after 9pm especially as camp fires can be a hazard

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and all comments both positive and negative are taken seriously. We do have a quiet after 10,30 pm - but I think having a separate one for children would be difficult to manage. Having said that I do know that I did move the children out of the barn that weekend at 10pm as the echo from the barn was quite noisy. Its fair to say that this particular weekend was a busy August bank holiday one, where we had quite a few groups staying.
We are pleased though that despite this you still enjoyed and loved our site and see that you would visit us again.

We had a wonderful stay here - so much so that we booked to come back before we had left! The owners are so friendly and welcoming, and the site has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. It was perfect for our family as the children all made friends and were very happy just running around and playing together - they never wanted to leave, and it was always a rush to get back when we did! The social areas are excellent, and you can opt in or out as you choose. We enjoyed the Friday night BBQ and the Sunday morning breakfast - both delicious, and also great opportunities to meet new people and just enjoy being outside and sharing a communal meal. All five of us would very highly recommend this campsite - we were so happy our search led us here, and are already looking forward to returning!

This was our second visit this year to Croft Campsite - so that tells you we like it!
Although the site was nearly full, we still received a very warm welcome from Maria and Guy, free tea and juice was at hand in the reception area and lots of information on the area if you should need it.
As expected, there were lots of families staying, but the site is big enough and has plenty of child friendly facilities that you don't feel inundated by children, if like us, you are travelling without children.
The site is kept very clean with excellent facilities.
If you do have children this site really is fantastic, if you don't, it is still a great find.

Local attractions

The Croft Campsite has easy access to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the river estuaries of the Blythe, Alde, Deben, Orwell and Stour. Get out into Suffolk for its famed beaches, rivers and peaceful roads – this county has the lowest rainfall in the UK too, always a plus when you're off on an outdoor hol…

Between 30 to 40 minutes' walk away or a two-mile drive is the ancient village of Laxfield, reachable via a riverside walk along the Blythe from Ubbeston. Have a sup in one (both?) of its two pubs when you arrive (beer is still tapped directly from the barrel in one and food is served in the other), then have a wander around the museum in the sixteenth century Guildhall, opposite the supermarket and post office and open at weekends in summer.

Day trips and afternoon wanders around Suffolk attractions and towns are easily accessed from the site: Framlingham and its castle overlooking the mere (do take a wander around the ramparts); Orford with English Heritage keep, boat trips along the River Alde and Orfordness-Havergate National Nature Reserve and lighthouse, and Minsmere, home to the coastal, woodland, wetland and heathland habitats of RSPB Minsmere.
