General

  • Family-run site opened in 2016, near the Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • Wet weather facilities including games barn and picnic tables
  • Modern amenities block with underfloor heating

Owners Maria and Guy at The Croft Campsite in East Anglia know what makes guests tick: they've added heaps of little touches to this popular little site a short drive from the Sussex Heritage Coast.

Opened in 2016, The Croft is a small family-run countryside site with a friendly vibe, high-quality amenities and loads of room to play. It's in the village of Ubbeston, near the market towns of Framlingham and Halesworth, and a couple of miles from the pubs and supermarket in the village of Laxfield.

Help yourself to a tea, coffee or squash when you arrive, then set up in this pleasant spot; the owners are always around if you need any help. And then investigate your surroundings: The Croft has a big field for football, kite flying and general running around, and a barn kitted out with ping pong tables, table football and ride-on toys. The Cart Lodge is a communal space with picnic tables for dining away from your pitch. Four-legged guests can dash about at the dog run area, which stretches to a third of an acre.

Barbecues are held here on Fridays, egg, bacon or sausage rolls are generally available on Sundays, and croissants and pain au chocolat can be ordered every morning. There's no shop, but camping essentials like torches and batteries are available for sale.

Other facilities include a well-kept toilet and shower block, washing-up facilities, chemical disposal and a washing machine and dryer. The owners are happy to charge mobile phones and battery packs for free.

The nearest town to the site is Halesworth, a scenic 15-minute drive away.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Was welcomed on arrival by Maria and made to feel at ease instantly. Facilities were clean and the whole place had a relaxed atmosphere that really helped the three kids enjoy their stay. Go karts to explore the fields and a bunny hunt were well thought out touches. Loved our stay and would wholeheartedly recommend to others considering.

Excellent clean camp site. Pitched up where requested.

Very busy Friday and saturday. Usually book adult only an d will consider mid week break next time. This is a personal choice and the site is excellent for families. Bbq was lovely and the fire pits an added bonus.

Lovely area and the pubs at Laxfield are great for a meal.

Will use again and are considering their music festival next year.

Really great facilities, such as toilets and showers. Helpful and friendly owners. Good areas for children, such as rec ground and covered 'kids zone', good for all ages. Flat tent pitches. Really quiet area.

    Disliked:

Busy, and a little on top of other campers, although we did have a big tent and went on the busiest day of the year! Perhaps a bit far for nipping out to shops/ tourist places etc, but this didn't bother us much. Pitchup said there was WiFi but I didn't see anything about this whilst there, although there may have been this facility if we had asked.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and we are really pleased that you love most things about our site and would visit us again. For your information next time we do have WiFi around the reception area. You just need to ask for the code.

The Croft Campsite has easy access to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the river estuaries of the Blythe, Alde, Deben, Orwell and Stour. Get out into Suffolk for its famed beaches, rivers and peaceful roads – this county has the lowest rainfall in the UK too, always a plus for an outdoor hol…

About 30 minutes' walk away (or a two-mile drive) is the ancient village of Laxfield, reachable via a riverside walk along the Blythe from Ubbeston. Have a sup in one (both?) of its two pubs (beer is still tapped directly from the barrel in one and food is served in the other), then have a wander around the museum in the 16th-century Guildhall, open at weekends in summer.

Day trips and wanders around Suffolk attractions and towns are easily accessed from the site: Framlingham and its castle overlooking the mere (do take a wander around the ramparts); Orford with English Heritage keep, boat trips along the River Alde and Orfordness-Havergate National Nature Reserve and lighthouse, and Minsmere, home to the coastal, woodland, wetland and heathland habitats of RSPB Minsmere.
