The Croft Campsite: Camping pitches

General

  • Family-run site opened in 2016, near the Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • Wet weather facilities including games barn and picnic tables
  • Modern amenities block with underfloor heating

Owners Maria and Guy at The Croft Campsite in East Anglia know what makes guests tick: they've added heaps of little touches to this popular little site a short drive from the Sussex Heritage Coast.

Opened in 2016, The Croft is a small family-run countryside site with a friendly vibe, high-quality amenities and loads of room to play. It's in the village of Ubbeston, near the market towns of Framlingham and Halesworth, and a couple of miles from the pubs and supermarket in the village of Laxfield.

Help yourself to a tea, coffee or squash when you arrive, then set up in this pleasant spot; the owners are always around if you need any help. And then investigate your surroundings: The Croft has a big field for football, kite flying and general running around, and a barn kitted out with ping pong tables, table football and ride-on toys.

The Cart Lodge is a communal space with picnic tables for dining away from your pitch. Four-legged guests can dash about at the dog run area, which stretches to a third of an acre, while kids spend some time on the traverse wall and wooden adventure trail at the outdoor playground.

Barbecues are held here on Fridays, egg, bacon or sausage rolls are generally available on Sundays, and croissants and pain au chocolat can be ordered every morning. There's no shop, but camping essentials like torches and batteries are available for sale.

Other facilities include a well-kept toilet and shower block, washing-up facilities, chemical disposal and a washing machine and dryer. The owners are happy to charge mobile phones and battery packs for free.

The nearest town to the site is Halesworth, a scenic 15-minute drive away.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

A really friendly welcome from the owners, with all the info we needed. We had a large pitch with lots of space, which didn't feel overlooked or hemmed in by other guests. Lots of shower and toilet facilities that were kept really clean. Complimentary tea & coffee available at reception which was very much appreciated. Washing machine was available for guest use if needed, which we have made a note of for another visit. Washing up space was plenty, and the option of Sunday morning bacon / egg rolls (with freshly baked rolls picked up from a local shop in the morning). Everything we needed for a stay, with a few thoughtful touches for guests.

The facilities are excellent and spotless. Helpful and friendly hosts. Great base for exploring the area.

    Disliked:

The wasps were horrendous, they made cooking and eating outside impossible. We (and several other campers) ended up eating in our car, to get away from them. Actually came home early because of them and we're regular campers, not newbies.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us.
I am so sorry that your stay was marred by the wasps. As this was your second visit - the first being at the same last year, you must realise that our campsite is not normally plagued with wasps. It has been widely documented about the huge number of wasps this year due to the unprecedented hot dry weather.
We feel that we did our best by providing eco solutions of peppermint essential oil and distilled white vinegar for campers to spray. We told everyone to spray their surroundings and tables where food preparation was carried out. Many campers said how well this worked. You haven’t mentioned whether you used this spray or not. We also encouraged wasp traps to be placed at the corners of your pitches, helping many to make them.
We do hope that this experience hasn’t put you off our site.

Modest but warm and welcoming stay. Kids lived to have their own area to play with newly met friends and hanged out until very late. Pitches gave enough privacy even though all of them were full. Showers and toilets very clean, use of washing machine and dryer great, also fridges clean nice. Maria and Guy always there to assist in any way so very nice place to stay.

    Excellent facilities:
Plenty of good showers and bathroom facilities. High standards.
Great grounds with separate playing field for games and another for dog walking.
The large barn with table tennis tables and football table games kept our 3 children endlessly occupied; whatever the weather. The free to use Go-Carts were also brilliant.
Fridges and freezers and device charging available at no additional cost.
Friendly and helpful hosts (their house onsite).
Good value camping when compared to other sites.

    Disliked:

Lots of wasps about (August), perhaps beyond control of the site owners.

Slight shame for us that our tent pitch did not have view of the play areas, so difficult to watch our children closely without actually accompanying them.
Found it annoying at times that other campers or there children did not clear up properly behind them, found this disrespectful.

Slightly remote location, if you want to be near shops and services.

From the manager...

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and like our site. We do take requests for pitches though never promise to guarantee them if next time you would like one near the play area. It helps us to know preference’s.
Sorry about the wasps - we have never experienced wasps like it and its been well documented the huge number around this year. We searched around to see if there were any nests on our site and could not find any. Apparently they travel quite far in search of sugar.

Nothing really, the only thing I would say which I think is unavoidable in this heat was the amount of wasps, we’re not that experienced campers so we may have been able to be better prepared too!

From the manager...

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us with the exception of those irritating wasps. It really was out of our control and due to the unprecedented hot and dry weather. We hope you found our peppermint and vinegar spray useful in keeping them at bay.

Local attractions

The Croft Campsite has easy access to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the river estuaries of the Blythe, Alde, Deben, Orwell and Stour. Get out into Suffolk for its famed beaches, rivers and peaceful roads – this county has the lowest rainfall in the UK too, always a plus for an outdoor break…

About 30 minutes' walk away (or a two-mile drive) is the ancient village of Laxfield, reachable via a riverside walk along the Blythe from Ubbeston. Have a sup in one (both?) of its two pubs (beer is still tapped directly from the barrel in one and food is served in the other), then have a wander around the museum in the 16th-century Guildhall, open at weekends in summer.

Day trips and wanders around Suffolk attractions and towns are easily accessed from the site: Framlingham and its castle overlooking the mere (do take a wander around the ramparts); Orford with English Heritage keep, boat trips along the River Alde and Orfordness-Havergate National Nature Reserve and lighthouse, and Minsmere, home to the coastal, woodland, wetland and heathland habitats of RSPB Minsmere.
