Plenty of room to play

  • Family-run site opened in 2016, near the Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • Wet weather facilities including games barn and picnic tables
  • Modern amenities block with underfloor heating
Owners Maria and Guy at The Croft Campsite in East Anglia know what makes guests tick: they've added heaps of little touches to this popular little site a short drive from the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Opened in 2016, The Croft is a small family-run countryside site with a friendly vibe, high-quality amenities and loads of room to play. It's in the village of Ubbeston, near the market towns of Framlingham and Halesworth, and a couple of miles from the pubs and supermarket in the village of Laxfield. Help yourself to a tea, coffee or squash when you arrive, then set up in this pleasant spot; the owners are always around if you need any help. And then investigate your surroundings: The Croft has a big field for football, kite flying and general running around, and a barn kitted out with ping pong tables, table football and ride-on toys. The Cart Lodge is a communal space with picnic tables for dining away from your pitch. Four-legged guests can dash about at the dog run area, which stretches to a third of an acre, while kids spend some time on the traverse wall and wooden adventure trail at the outdoor playground. Barbecues are held here on Fridays, egg, bacon or sausage rolls are generally available on Sundays, and croissants and pain au chocolat can be ordered every morning. There's no shop, but camping essentials like torches and batteries are available for sale. Other facilities include a well-kept toilet and shower block, washing-up facilities, chemical disposal and a washing machine and dryer. The owners are happy to charge mobile phones and battery packs for free. The nearest town to the site is Halesworth, a scenic 15-minute drive away.

What customers say

This is an excellent, family-friendly campsite with spacious, clean facilities including warm showers and a well-equipped play barn and go-karts. Hosts Maria and Guy are highly praised for their warm welcome, helpfulness, and attention to detail, including organised events like Friday BBQs and Sunday breakfasts. Children and dogs are well catered for, with dedicated play and dog areas. Some minor points raised include the distance to local pubs and the need to purchase on-site firewood. Overall, guests highly recommend the site and plan to return.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Excellent campsite, pitches lovely and spacious and toilet block/showers were very clean. Real winner though was the go karts around the site and the play barn. It children (5 and 3yo) had a fantastic time, also the treasure hunt was an excellent feature and Sunday breakfast was delicious! Will definitely be visiting again!

Electric grass pitch

Liked We love this campsite. The pitch sizes are generous and the overall size of the site isn't huge so it's never too noisy/crowded.

The kids love the play barn, playground and pedal karts, we literally didn't see them all weekend as they were off playing.

The hosted bbq Friday night and breakfast Sunday morning is an added bonus and the 'Hartley Hare' hunt kept the adults and children engaged over the weekend.

The toilet and kitchen block is very clean and new.

Owners are lovely and friendly and regularly checked in to see how we were.

Disliked You can't walk to a local pub easily, but that's nothing against the site itself!

From the manager: Thank you for this lovely review. It really means a lot to us to know that you have enjoyed your stay. Yes it’s a shame that we are not closer to the lovely pubs in Laxfield. We do however have a walking map to the local pubs that takes you along a footpath and also an officially quiet road. It is about a 50 minutes to an 1 hour walk as it’s longer than going by the road (for the start of it you are walking in the wrong direction!) but its delightful.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Large very flat grass pitch. Very spacious. Excellent site for children to run around freely. Lots for them to do in play barn, outside play area, field for playing with balls without disturbing anyone else. They run a treasure hunt on the weekends too. Toilets and showers are good and cleaned regularly. The also run a social BBQ on a Friday evening which I didn't get any pics of but was lovely. Freshly baked croissants also available to order the night before as well as breakfast rolls on a Sunday. These guys work really hard to make sure everyone enjoys themselves. You can also hire fire pits (or bring your own) although you do HAVE to buy their wood for insurance reasons which was £14 and £11 for each additional bag. On the plus side they come and clear it all away after your stay. Personal touches here are fabulous

Disliked Nothing negative to say.

From the manager: Thank you for this lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Yes we pay a lot extra on our insurance for them to allow us to have fire pits so buying our wood helps to off set this.

Electric grass pitch

Liked This site had everything we needed for a fab Easter break…. Good size, level pitches, great toilets and showers that were always clean and had heated floors - included a large family shower room which was perfect for us, a play barn for indoor fun, use of fridges, lovely country inn with fab food in 40 mins walks across fields. Maria and Guy were lovely hosts and even laid on an Easter egg hunt for all the kids on Easter Sunday. We will definitely be back!

Camping pod

Liked We had a fantastic stay at Camp Croft! Check-in was very easy and everything was spotless throughout. The host was attentive and had thought of all the little touches you might need – from a firepit set up ready to go, to immaculate toilets and showers.

We brought our two boys (10 and 15) along with our two dogs, and everyone had the best time. The children especially loved the go-karts, table tennis, table football, and the open areas to play. We also treated ourselves to some homemade pain au chocolats which were absolutely delicious.

We stayed in the only camping pod and it was amazing – the beds were very comfortable and it had everything we needed, including kitchen items and washing up supplies. Out in the BBQ area there were fridges available, which kept everything fresh. It felt cosy yet practical, and we only wish we’d booked it for longer than one night!

Highly recommend Camp Croft for families, children, and even four-legged friends. We’ll definitely be back.

Be mindful the WiFi is not reachable to the camping areas, this was not a negative for us and made our children be able to be children again.

Local attractions

The Croft Campsite has easy access to the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the river estuaries of the Blythe, Alde, Deben, Orwell and Stour. Get out into Suffolk for its famed beaches, rivers and peaceful roads – this county has the lowest rainfall in the UK too, always a plus for an outdoor break… About 30 minutes' walk away (or a two-mile drive) is the ancient village of Laxfield, reachable via a riverside walk along the Blythe from Ubbeston. Have a sup in one (both?) of its two pubs (beer is still tapped directly from the barrel in one and food is served in the other), then have a wander around the museum in the 16th-century Guildhall, open at weekends in summer. Day trips and wanders around Suffolk attractions and towns are easily accessed from the site: Framlingham and its castle overlooking the mere (do take a wander around the ramparts); Orford with English Heritage keep, boat trips along the River Alde and Orfordness-Havergate National Nature Reserve and lighthouse, and Minsmere, home to the coastal, woodland, wetland and heathland habitats of RSPB Minsmere.
