  • Smart glamping units around a peaceful 10-acre Suffolk farm
  • A 20-minute drive to Southwold; Thorington Theatre five minutes away
  • Kitchen facilities, bedding and firepits provided for all guests
Smart Suffolk stays are certainly on the cards for guests at Bunkers Hill Farm – this peaceful site a mile from the village of Bramfield has a collection of glamping units set up around its 10 acres of grounds, with plenty of space around each one for a properly peaceful experience. Getting your fix of countryside air is easy here, as much of what you’ll need is provided for you – beds and bed linen will be ready for your arrival, and there are towels available to hire too. Each accommodation has a firepit and outdoor seating for those cosy outdoor evenings, and you can acquire firewood on site so you won’t have to bring it. The shared facilities here have been well thought out, with access to showers and eco-friendly compost toilets as well as a covered cooking area with a barbecue, fridge, kettle, washing-up area and a good collection of crockery, cutlery, glasses and other useful bits. With so much already sorted, you’ll simply need to rock up with some food and drinks, a couple of handy items (torches and wellies are not a bad idea) and whatever clothing you need for days of exploring your surroundings. That may well involve bringing boots for a rural ramble and/or beach kit for some time over in Southwold, Dunwich or Aldeburgh, all of which are within a half-hour drive. Other interests in mind? Golf and birdwatching are close by, and the area has several places to launch your paddleboards or kayaks.

Robin shepherd's hut

Liked: It was lovely place to stay, the host was lovely and made me feel welcomed and dog friendly. Lovely log fire in the evening. It had plenty of places to visit around within a 20 minute drive. Local pubs dog friendly I will definitely be staying there again.

Swallow yurt (no pets)

Liked: Beautiful, quiet location. Yurt was a lovely place to sleep & the surrounding area had all the equipment we could have wanted. We have our own tent but wanted a little bit of glamping on one of the last hot weekends of summer!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing. The owners were lovely & couldn’t do enough for us.

Local attractions

The Suffolk coast is a big draw for most guests, and you’ll be well within range of some excellent spots. Southwold (20 minutes’ drive) has a sand/shingle beach, tours of the Adnams Brewery and some very fun amusements on its 190-metre pier, while Dunwich (15 minutes) is a bit of a wilder option backed by heath and woods. Arty Aldeburgh (25 minutes) and the birdwatching haven RSPB Minsmere (20 minutes) are worth visiting too. If you’re on a grownup escape, a tour of Valley Farm Vineyards might be in order; if you’ve got the family with you, perhaps Camel Park Oasis is a better option – here you can meet meerkats, lemurs and wallabies and play crazy golf as well as taking camel rides. Both options are about 15 minutes’ drive away. For a special alfresco experience, make your way through the woods to Thorington Theatre (five minutes), an outdoor amphitheatre that stages plays, comedy nights, musical events and kids’ shows throughout the summer months (you’ll need to book tickets in advance for this).
