  • Luxury glamping in Suffolk woodland 10 minutes' drive from Diss
  • A half-hour drive from Thetford Forest; 45 minutes from Southwold
  • Hot tub and sauna; private firepit and facilities
A Hobbit-style log cabin luxurious enough to rival a hotel room… that's what’s on offer at Oak Lodge Retreat, as well as a spectacular Suffolk woodland setting, swishly modern amenities and a peaceful retreat vibe. The owners here aren’t fans of loads of hidden extras, so the fee includes firewood, charcoal and showers – and, rather more excitingly for those who like to unwind, use of site facilities such as a hot tub and a barrel sauna. The cabin has a firepit area for guests to warm themselves up in chillier months, and you'll have your own little bistro table to relax at (just the place to sip the bottle of bubbly that will be waiting on your arrival…) For more by way of eats and drinks, make use of the site's café (open from breakfast through to afternoon tea) or check out the options at the bar area. As a good introduction to the café, all guests will get a complimentary breakfast of pancakes or waffles with maple syrup, plus a cup of coffee or tea. But it's not all about the facilities – this retreat is also a fine spot for Suffolk and Norfolk countryside adventuring, between Thetford Forest to the west and the coast at Southwold to the east. For town, village and city sightseeing, local village Brome is half a mile away, Diss is 10 minutes’ drive and Norwich is reachable in 45 minutes. Eye, a riverside settlement with a medieval castle, woodland walks, a weekly market and acclaimed 14th-century church, is five minutes’ drive from the site for more urban times.

Local attractions

Dad's Army aficionados: you might be pleased to know that a national exhibition dedicated to the show is a 15-minute drive away at Bressingham Steam & Gardens – which also has a collection of working locomotives to whizz around on. If fishing’s what you’re a fan of, chances to go angling can be had at Diss Mere while meets and greets with monkeys, alpacas and exotic birds are possible in Shorelands Wildlife Gardens (both 15 minutes from the site). Speaking of winged critters, you can also set off for the Redgrave and Lopham Fens, 20 minutes away and one of Europe’s most important wetlands, to look out for hobbies by day and barn owls as evening falls. For a gander at other things that ply the skies, the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum is also 20 minutes away; mosey on over to this museum to see a collection of aircraft-related bits and bobs near the old RAF Bungay airfield. Activities strictly related to firm ground can be had at Thetford Forest, Britain’s biggest lowland pine forest, with walks aplenty through the trees to choose from.
