Church View Campsite: Pitches

General

  • Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
  • In the grounds of a fitness centre with hairdresser and gym on site
  • Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course

Ready for action? Fab four-acre Church View Campsite is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds.

Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay as you go basis; if you’d rather work out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables.

Yes, it’s possible that all this activity might mess your hair up… but no, you can’t use it as an excuse to duck out, for there’s a barber and hairdresser on site to restore your barnet to a beauteous state. And it’s worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away.

Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed). There's also a small on-site licensed café-bar serving snacks and light bites, with a lovely bamboo garden area where you can watch the world go by with a pint or some coffee and cake.

Please note

Units longer than 7.5 metres are not allowed.

Facilities/activities including gym are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

On the first Sunday of every month the site hosts the start and finish of five- and 10-kilometre running races: this may include some amplified music from around 7am, kept to a reasonable level.

The events are part of the Great Barrow Challenge: guests are welcome to sign up.

We stayed here just for one night as we were attending a wedding locally. Seems like a lovely site. Warden came over to check we were ok and that we were happy with the pitch, she seemed very friendly and welcoming.

Plenty of toilets and showers, all very clean. Good facilities on site.

We will certainly be back and bringing our family to stay longer next time.

    Nice location, reasonably priced site

    Disliked:

Keypad for barrier is on the wrong side, so you have to get out of the van to operate it. As I am slightly infirm the barrier twice went down before I could get back into the van and drive through.

The site is OK, but has a definite "home made" look.

We try to touch base with everyone once they have arrived to ensure they have found all the facilities etc. Occasionally we do miss guests but our phone number is widely available on all correspondence and on notices on site should we be able to help in any way.

We forgot our awning tent pegs and staff were immediately quick to help, offering us their personal tent pegs which saved our weekend! So generous! So much to do at and near this campsite! It’s a beautiful area, we explored Bury st Edmunds but also nearby nature reserves. Campsite itself has assault course, running events, small animals to see and small play area for children. And more! Really relaxed feel with friendly helpful staff. Facilities basic but clean, shower was powerful and hot (temperature adjustable!) picnic bench on our pitch was also a lovely bonus! Pitched well spaced and not a huge site so not too busy! Will definitely love to visit again! Excellent value for money too!

Just something to bare in mind, try book activities before you go so you get the best deals as booking for activities seems to be online rather than in person.

Local attractions

Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape, half an hour away by car.

If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away.

Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
