General

  • Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
  • In the grounds of a fitness centre with hairdresser and gym on site
  • Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course

Back to school for your hols (gasp)? Panic not – Church View Campsite at Suffolk Academy is an entirely blackboard-free zone. In fact, this fab four-acre site is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds.

Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay as you go basis; if you’d rather work out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables.

Activities are offered at additional cost and mostly suitable for adults or older kids; away from these, the site is simple, quiet and basic with no additional facilities for kids… just plenty of space to make your own entertainment, play or relax.

Yes, it’s possible that all this activity might mess your hair up… but no, you can’t use it as an excuse to duck out, for there’s a barber and hairdresser on site to restore your barnet to a beauteous state. And it’s worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away.

Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed).

Please note

Unfortunately it was a very wet few days and I know they are looking into getting the driveway maintained but was very muddy walking to showers/swings/indoor area which has made me only want to book hardstanding pitches in the future

Everything felt a bit rundown, indoor shower was hot which was lovely but broken (Sprayed everywhere from pipe)

Had wifi but not great for doing any work if you have too

We chose Church View so we could spend some time in a peaceful corner of Suffolk, enjoying the countryside and taking a break from politics, pundits and pandemics. Our caravan is also new to us, so we wanted to learn about it before a longer trip next week.
Well, we chose brilliantly well. Glen and Julie are a cheery, helpful presence; the facilities were just right (and very clean). Even when it rained nearly all day, we felt at ease with the world. We walked and I ran locally, the views are lovely; NT Ickworth is just 15 minutes by car; the Weeping Willow in Barrow is an easy walk (use a torch on the lane on the way back) and the welcome, the food and the wine list were all up to the best.
Thanks, Julie and Glen, your site is awesome; we'll try to come back .... and look forward to the crazy golf that you're planning!

Owner - Julie , very friendly

    Disliked:

Booked Hardstanding but this was so poor our step kept sinking into the ground
Showers - no private cubicles in main block.
Private cubicles further down camping field but these are in a shed, cold and you can view the night/morning sky whilst showering
Road around site was very rutted
Kept getting disturbed by work men.

From the manager...

We are sorry not to meet expectations on this occasion.

We are a basic campsite, we are basically a field with toilets and showers available. Please don't come here and expect all singing and dancing shower blocks.

We do have a variety of shower facilities and guests can chose the ones that suit them. Had we been asked on this occasion we could have advised that there was actually a third option, totally private, hot with heating, and not in a shed.

The pitch type is grass and 'gravel' and granted is soft, we are looking to rectify this as we are also looking to redo the track around the site - note 'track' rather than road. However the volume of rain just recently from Storm Alex and also the increased traffic from this years unprecedented camping has very quickly had an impact.

We are rustic and quirky. But we will always try to help during your stay to rectify things. We were not on site much this weekend but we did leave a phone number and invited a call or text if there was any problem.

The work men we apologise for, they were working from 9am - 4pm max. and unfortunately maintenance has to be done at some point.

It rained so won’t blame the campsite for that everywhere nicer on a sunny day . Good pre arrival info but needed to go and explore where inside showers were and would have liked more info to clarify location .
Porta loos were clean as were outside showers.
Well secured site ... code needed in and out .
Good wi fi.... but as only 4 on site so under no pressure.
Did not use but wash up ,freezer etc , games and bar area would be nice in summer
Wardens not seen throughout but had their contact numbers and text in case if any issues

    Disliked:

Off putting access ..... scruffy and items of rubbish need clearing to make site give a better first impression.

Very shabby large shed on edge of site full of old chairs and sofas .... an absolute eye sore would hate the thought of kids accessing that structure.

From the manager...

sorry we didn't get to meet you Linda, usually we are around to show guests around if need be.
The development of our entrance is ongoing and has been hampered recently by those lovely storms!
the shabby shed is as I write under development (watch this space for news!) and during the summer when children were on site was closed off. We always try to be aware of who is on site an what we need to do accordingly.
Our site is extremely child friendly or so most families agree :)

    Disliked:

the only thing I would like due to C19 would have be some antiseptic spray or wipes in the toilet/shower and kitchen but it did not put me off the place

From the manager...

Thanks for the lovely review. Will think about leaving some spray and wipes in the shower areas. Anti bac wipes were and are available in the kitchen area which also doubles with the games area and they are available to wipe down the table tennis bats etc. they may not have been obvious and we will think about how that can improve.

Local attractions

Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape, half an hour away by car.

If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away.

Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
