General
- Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
- In the grounds of a fitness centre with hairdresser and gym on site
- Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course
Back to school for your hols (gasp)? Panic not – Church View Campsite at Suffolk Academy is an entirely blackboard-free zone. In fact, this fab four-acre site is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds.
Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay as you go basis; if you’d rather work out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables.
Activities are offered at additional cost and mostly suitable for adults or older kids; away from these, the site is simple, quiet and basic with no additional facilities for kids… just plenty of space to make your own entertainment, play or relax.
Yes, it’s possible that all this activity might mess your hair up… but no, you can’t use it as an excuse to duck out, for there’s a barber and hairdresser on site to restore your barnet to a beauteous state. And it’s worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away.
Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed).

From the manager...
We are sorry not to meet expectations on this occasion. We are a basic campsite, we are basically a field with toilets and showers available. Please don't come here and expect all singing and dancing shower blocks. We do have a variety of shower facilities and guests can chose the ones that suit them. Had we been asked on this occasion we could have advised that there was actually a third option, totally private, hot with heating, and not in a shed. We are rustic and quirky. But we will always try to help during your stay to rectify things. We were not on site much this weekend but we did leave a phone number and invited a call or text if there was any problem. The work men we apologise for, they were working from 9am - 4pm max. and unfortunately maintenance has to be done at some point. |

Thanks for the lovely review. Will think about leaving some spray and wipes in the shower areas. Anti bac wipes were and are available in the kitchen area which also doubles with the games area and they are available to wipe down the table tennis bats etc. they may not have been obvious and we will think about how that can improve. |

Local attractions
Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape, half an hour away by car.
If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away.
Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
