Thorpe Hall Manor: A view of Thorpe Hall

General

  • Static caravan on a 100-acre farm overlooking the Haddiscoe Marshes
  • Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth within a 20-minute drive
  • Fresh farm produce for sale; blacksmith taster days and courses

Meander through marshes and saunter alongside the sea from Thorpe Hall Manor, a quiet and well-kept farm site in the hamlet of Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe. With 100 acres of farmland, a nature pond and fab marshy views to keep you occupied, this will be a tempting hideaway for those looking to unplug in a countrified, nature-packed place near the coast.

Thorpe Hall Manor may be located in deepest East Anglia, but rare breed animals that hail from other parts of the British Isles call this place home too – the likes of Hebridean sheep and Golden Guernsey goats. The farm also keeps chickens, pigs, turkeys and cattle, meaning lots of fab, farm-fresh produce is on hand. As well as its ultra-local food, Thorpe Hall Manor manages its land in a less intensive way, allowing wildlife to thrive in its many quieter corners.

If you're keen to brush up on your countryside skills, take a look at the blacksmiths' forge on site – here guests can sign up for taster days and courses. If you're after something more delicate, the site also runs jewellery courses in which you can make your own rings, earrings and the like (please book ahead for courses).

The accommodation here is spacious and bright, and comes with a kitchen space, living area and comfy double bedroom. Inside, there's a separate (and very clean) composting loo, with shared flush toilets and hot showers a short walk away. All this is a few steps from a Saxon church, a 16th-century country house, the edge of the Haddiscoe Marshes and a nifty cut-through to Haddiscoe station. The nearest pub, where tasty meals are served, is about a 15-minute stroll away.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Electricity is not included in the rate. It is charged at £0.11 per kWh and is payable on departure (meter in place).

A brilliant base for cycling round the quiet Norfolk lanes.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying on a farm surrounded by goats, sheep and chickens with a lovely view over the marshes. The owner made us most welcome and was kind, helpful and informative.
If you are looking for a luxury caravan this is not for you, it is basic but everything you need for a comfy stay is provided and the wifi works a treat. We had an excellent connection.
Do check on opening times of local pubs because, as is the case all over the UK now, some have closed altogether and others have restricted hours.
We loved our short break and came home with a cooler box of meat from the farm as well as some goat's milk soap.

Be aware this is strictly no-frills budget accommodation, but as such, offers outstanding value for money in tranquil location.
Mr Johnson, the owner, is very kind and helpful, ensuring l had everything l needed for a comfortable stay.
The caravan is very clean, with spacious living/kitchen area and lots of storage cupboards. The kitchen is well-equipped with small electric oven and 2 hobs, kettle, toaster, plus tea and coffee. There is a fridge, sink with cold water tap, cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils. Bedding and towels are also provided.
Mr Johnson can sell eggs fresh from the farm. If you are a meat eater, a plethora of cuts is available from rare breeds raised on the farm.
This is a very rural location with limited shopping options. There is a shop and pub in the village 1 mile away. Due to the location and emerging from lockdown, opening hours are limited, so l would advise taking plenty of food and supplied as l did.
If travelling by rail, the nearest station is a 40 minute walk away via public footpath. This is poorly marked and criss-crossed by numerous irrigation channels, so have access to a detailed map or GPS guidance.
A superb place to escape to and relish the blissful tranquility and nocturnal silence. This and the comfy bed ensured a sound night's sleep!

    Disliked:

Lack of wifi: whilst not essential, this would have been convenient.

Local attractions

Being towards the southern end of the Broads, there are bucketloads of pleasant rural waterways to cycle along, canoe down and watch wildlife by. Start off by calling in at St Olaves (five minutes' drive), a secluded spot on the Waveney river whose perpetual popularity can be explained by its well-preserved priory, Victorian suspension bridge and boat hire options.

Like Haddiscoe, St Olaves has a station on the spectacular Wherry Line – from here, you can glide along to Lowestoft (20 minutes), a splendid seaside spot over the border in Suffolk, or chug on down to Berney Arms (30 minutes), a gorgeously remote request stop on the edge of a nature-rich RSPB reserve.

Besides boating and birdwatching, Thorpe Hall Manor is well-located for family-friendly field trips to Great Yarmouth's Sea Life Centre (20 minutes), Pleasurewood Hills theme park (20 minutes) and brilliant Burgh Castle (20 minutes). Norwich's variety of kid-pleasing activities are close by too, with a bowling alley, castle and cinema all on the menu.
