Lovely big pitches and very peaceful
Very peaceful!

  • Peaceful adults-only site two miles from the Norfolk Broads
  • A 15-minute drive from Norwich city centre; 25 minutes from the coast
  • Atmospheric night-time vibes from lit woodlands; café and farm shop
If boating on The Broads has long been on your bucket list, take a look here: the dog-friendly Black Barn Farm is a peaceful place to pitch up two miles from the edge of the national park. Here, the adults-only pitches are in a 22-acre field in an established orchard and surrounded by woodlands, making for a rather chilled-out stay. This area is known as the big sky country, so splendid sunsets and lights in the trees create a pretty nice night-time vibe. You’ll be able to kick off the evening with a firepit or barbecue too, as both are permitted on site. A 15-minute drive from Norwich, this site is on the edge of Salhouse, a rural Broads village. So, bridleways and footpaths may be the first thing to capture your attention, as they lead the way to walking, wildlife spotting and canoe hire in the Salhouse Broad – or there's a place to launch your own canoe or paddleboard, two miles away from the site. Convenience is key at this site, starting with the toilets and showers inside the barn, all heated with auto light switches for that extra ease. The barn also has a small farm shop and a café that serves up sizeable breakfasts plus sandwiches and snacks. Nearby, a train station and bus stop are within walking distance with regular services to Norwich city centre or the coast. Foodie? The local food shop is a 20-minute walk away along a public footpath (or a five-minute car journey). For more specific bits, there’s a bigger supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away and beer aficionados will find a brewery and pub five minutes’ drive away too.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We've been doing a tour/road trip of Norfok....particularly the coast but wanted to have a look and trip on the Broads and a look at Norwich. This site was smashing for both! The barn food is 5 star ,the staff couldn't be more helpful. Beautiful coffee! Not a massive menue for lunchtime but the all day breakfast choice is great. I had quiche and it was top notch. Beer or prosecco too!! It wasn't busy on the camping field and I think maybe everyone had their own facilities as I never saw anyone in the shower room. Three loos two showers....loads of hot water and space and very clean ☆☆☆☆☆ ladies take your purse....I found all the gifts I needed by the lovely Jo in the craft barn downstairs.....butchers, local produce everything you need and more 😁

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location, layout, pitch size, cleanliness of toilets, showers etc. Attitude of management to pitch allocation, ie just pitch where you want...great staff and there was a farmer's market on the Saturday

Disliked: Waste facilities...only 1 waste bin which was overflowing and recycling consists of just a massive pile of glass bottles. Need to sort this out...get recycling bins and more waste bins Also, chemical waste point seemed to be blocked and was practically overflowing

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Farm shops and cafe. Farmers Market. Pitch was large. Fairly flat. Easy access to water. Clean toilets and showers. Plenty of hot water. We were met by the owners daughter and given directions and information. Owner also asked if we had everything we needed and directed us to the where the public footpath was. (Leads into the area beside the pub in Salhouse).

Disliked: No signage for the campsite at the entrance or directions in front of the shop. Big pile of bottles beside the bin. Not tidy in the arrival area - old farm equipment lying about. Could do with a gate or doors in front of the farm machinery and shop refrigeration to hide this. No direct woodland walks from the campsite and the public footpath is not signed. It would be really useful to have a leaflet with all the relevant information. No WiFi on campsite. Some aircraft noise.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nicely marked out pitches, very quiet in the evenings with wonderful birds including owls. Toilets were clean . Didn’t use the showers but looked clean. Had breakfast at Black Barn farm which was delicious and reasonably priced. Main road had bus service routes to Norwich and Stalham. Train station about 19 min walk away had direct train services to Norwich and Sheringham. Deli and butcher on site so you can pick up essentials

Disliked: Would prefer separate men/ladies toilet facilities although each loo/shower unit was fully enclosed so this is more a preference.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Large pitch area, very clean facilities, the barn itself has a cafe and multiple independent shops. While we was there they had some sort of fair with lots of independent shops, food and drink. The site is adult only so nice and relaxing. The staff on site are friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The site is dog friendly (we also took our dog) however noticed a lot of people didn’t obey the ‘dogs must be kept on lead’. The toilet and showers however very clean the sinks are extremely small and it’s like the soap has been strategically placed so you can’t brush your teeth. There is also no female hygienic bins.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Staff were friendly and helpful and the pitches level - nice you could choose any available pitch. Nice that it is an adult only site meaning it is quiet. Also nice that there aren’t too many pitches so not too over crowded altho to be fair it is towards end of season. Nice to have a shop and cafe on site too. Toilet and shower facilities were largely clean.

Disliked: The proximity of the shops and cafe meant that vehicle traffic impinged on tranquility of the camping area. The summer fayre was as lovely accept the visitors used the camping toilet and showers which meant a large number of people coming through including children into the adult only area. The ‘industrial’ areas used to support the farm shop etc made the place feel untidy and ugly - could be gated off. An extra large waste bin might prevent overflowing of litter - the one there was too full. Some traffic noise from nearby road, altho a minor impact.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This place does have its good points. The location isn’t bad, the pitches are a good size and it’s peaceful, and the sound of owls at night was lovely. The farm shop is really good too, and although we didn’t eat at the cafe it seemed very popular - as the meat from the butchers was such good quality I wouldn’t be surprised if the food was good too.

Disliked: Toilets weren’t all that clean and there weren’t enough of them. Unisex toilets only work if you’re genuinely catering for men and women ! No sanitary bins (just a waste basket) and sinks too small for a wash, no mirrors in the cubicles. Overflowing rubbish bins was really bad, and a lot of construction material on the way in - the washing up station didn’t look particularly sanitary. It’s not the cheapest of sites and it needs a spruce up really and more regular cleaning. Not walkable to local pub, as no path on main road

Electric grass pitch

Liked: -The chilled vibe the owners have created. -The cleanliness of the shower/toilet block. -The fact it’s for couples only. -The onsite (amazing) cafe that provides a really good selection of quality food/drink. -The setting (nice up lights in the wooded area, owls at night and on a clear night the sky is so vast and great for star gazing!) -The quietness it provided. Very relaxing.

Disliked: -Not so much a dislike but could do with more showers (only 2!) -could do with more information via an email when booking as by the time we turned up there was no one around to check us in so we weren’t entirely sure where to part or aware of any relevant information. Obviously this is because they are genuinely laid back about it all but would just be helpful for the customer.

Local attractions

Nosy about Norwich (15 minutes’ drive)? Those of you who aren’t familiar with this cultural city will find there’s much to stick your nose into, from bargain hunting around the old market to a full-on shopping trip or a pitstop tour of the independent eateries and historic sites… the highlight reel includes the hilltop Norwich Castle and the 11th-century cathedral. Those of you who are keen to weave a bit of the seaside into your way will want to head on over to the sandy beach and dunes at Winterton beach (35 minutes) or onto Great Yarmouth (25 minutes). This seaside resort town is all about the traditional, including a funfair, sandy beaches and the Sea Life Great Yarmouth aquarium.
