  • Eco-friendly wildlife haven in Burnham on the Norfolk Coast
  • A 10-minute drive to Holkham, Brancaster and Wells-next-the-Sea
  • Next to the Norfolk Coast Path, with beach views at low tide
If you’re looking for a wildlife retreat that will share your love for the natural world, the eco-friendly West of Wells Camping and Glamping will help you reconnect with mother nature. Set in the village of Burnham Norton, this site is a wildlife haven inside the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with freshwater marshes and high boulder cliffs at your fingertips. From here, you can wander right onto the coastal path, which will take you to Holkham, Brancaster or Wells-next-the-Sea. Burnham Norton village is a dinky little place, so for amenities, you’ll want to head to Burnham Market, a mile away – this historic market town is packed full of characterful pubs, coffee shops and independent shops (including a fishmonger and butcher – ready for barbecues back at base). The village is still worth a wander, though, especially if you always have a camera in hand. For history geeks, there’s also a National Trust-owned windmill just next door, as well as a millpond, classic humpback bridge, medieval gatehouse and ancient churches. With so much to do nearby, it’s no surprise to find that things are relatively simple on site: facilities include showers and eco-toilets, and all electricity is provided by solar power only – helping nature to stay as it is. As a laidback kind of place, campfires, barbecues and dogs are all allowed on site.

Local attractions

Nature is your playground in this area and Holkham Beach (45 minutes’ walk) will give you your daily dose of sand and sea. Further afield, there’s Brancaster Beach (10 minutes’ drive), where you’ll find a coast-stricken shipwreck (spooky!) For more unfiltered nature, the Scolt Head Island national nature reserve (50 minutes’ walk) is an unspoiled slice of the coast, with delicate wildlife living among its marshes, mudflats, and shingles. Grab your binoculars for RSPB Titchwell Marsh nature reserve (10 minutes), a bird lovers' hotspot. Then, head onto Blakeney Point National nature reserve (25 minutes) for a glimpse of England’s largest grey seal colony. Holkham Hall (10 minutes’ drive) offers a more stately affair, hosting events and tours around the courtyards. There’s Sandringham Estate (30 minutes), too, while Little Walsingham (20 minutes) is home to a shrine and two medieval monastic houses, with history breathing in every little corner. The bird sanctuary and harbour town of Wells-next-the-Sea is a short stop away (10 minutes) - if you’re lucky, you might spot more seals in the harbour.
