Brakehill Lodge Farm: Listen to the Poplar trees rustling in the breeze

General

  • Scenic orchard site on a Norfolk farm
  • Half an hour from Thetford Forest and 50 minutes from Norwich
  • Craft courses and farm shop selling honey, bread and veg

In need of a peaceful getaway that lets you unwind while still keeping your hands busy? Crafty guests should thread their way along to Brakehill Lodge Farm, a family-friendly orchard site on a Norfolk farm half an hour’s drive from Thetford.

With a whole farm to explore, there are scenic walks to take and lengthy bike rides to make, and the peace and quiet to sit down and finally finish that book that’s been taking up space on the nightstand… If switching off completely doesn’t quite fit the bill, never fear: the site regularly runs a whole host of craft courses, from soap and candle making to beekeeping (just remember to check course dates before travelling if something specific is desired).

The site’s also within half an hour of Thetford Forest, putting guests within easy reach of lots of walks, mountain biking trails and the long-distance Peddars Way. That sounds like hungry work so luckily, there’s a small shop in the on-site farmhouse where honey, homemade bread and homegrown veg can be picked up.

A lovely warm welcome when we arrived. Allowed to choose our pitch - only 2 out of the 4 being used when we arrived. Quiet, rural and Clean. A small site, the old barn has been converted into the communal areas with showers, toilets, kitchen wash up area. It also has a pool table, dart board, a couple of sofas and lovely large table and chairs area. It’s very rustic and basic but we liked that. Our children were safe to be able to go to the barn without us, which we won’t let them do on a busy/big site. Chickens and turkeys walking around freely, and the sounds of animals and farmers was a lovely change from our normal traffic and sirens noises at home.

    Disliked:

There are only two toilets and two showers, if the site was at full capacity (6 tent pitches and 3 bell tents(glamping)) I could imagine that to be a problem. It wasn’t a problem for us, we never had to wait for either.
Maybe I was doing something wrong, but I could only get cold water from the wash basins (hot water in showers and kitchen sink though).

Lovely location if you're after a quiet family camping trip.

The facilities are basic and just two toilets and showers, but that was more than adequate for our stay as we occupied 4 of the 6 tent pitches, and the facilities are shared with those staying in the bell tents.

Claire was kind enough to book us the full use of the tent field which made a huge difference, and was very welcome. It would have felt overcrowded if we were staying with other families that we didn't know as the tent pitches are quite close together, but given the full use of the field and security of the location it was lovely to be able to let the children run around and explore a bit. They were able to see the chickens and the ducks which amused them most days.

The barn hosts additional gaming tables (pool, football) and offers shelter if we wanted to go indoors for a break from the rain, very spacious allowing the children a bit of freedom.

Fire pits are available for hire, and logs can be purchased at a local garage.

You can also purchase eggs and other home made toiletries from the site.

The barn and hosted amenities are quirky but this is a nice feature of the location.

    Disliked:

Would have felt overcrowded if the tent field was fully occupied with families that we didn't know. The facilities often ran out of hand towels and toilet roll, just a little closer checks on those would have helped.

Everything!!! We stayed for one night in one of the Bell tents and it was everything we had hoped for! Clare was very friendly, the tent had everything we needed from logs for the fire, charcoal for the bbq, towels, kettle with tea, water, crockery! There is a pool table, badminton rackets, the views are lovely and it's such a beautiful setting. You could buy fresh eggs and local honey! We will definitely be back!

All of it! The owners were lovely, even helping us out when we found we’d forgotten our tent poles. The site is small with a mix of safari tents which our friends used and pitches with electrical hook-up. The rescue chickens and the sunsets were lovely, and there was plenty of indoor space to play pool, table football, darts and even badminton when it rained. Showers lovely, spotless, indoor washing up sink and comfy sofas for the adults when it rained.

Loved our stay - this is a really thoughtfully run campsite. When the weather was awful, our teenagers loved the indoor pool table, table football, darts while the adults sat in the kitchen, chatting. The owners are lovely and helped us out when we realised we'd forgotten our tent poles. It's a small, peaceful site, facilities squeaky-clean, and there are some gorgeous rescue-chickens to add to the bliss. Would love to have stayed longer. Not much wifi but that was a bonus! Sunsets were gorgeous, esp from the elevated sunset bench.

Local attractions

Attention all fishing fans angling for a real catch of a getaway: will proximity to the well-stocked and spectacularly scenic Loch Neaton fishing lake (a mere 10-minute drive from base) prove to be enough of a lure? Pull up a slice of bank and cast a line to try and land carp, bream, perch, roach, rudd, tench or pike in a lucky catch.

Not everyone’s a fan of quiet afternoons with rod and reel, of course. Not to worry, there are plenty more fish in the sea... The Norfolk coast is about an hour’s drive away – head to Holkham beach for swimming and sandy strolls, or make Great Yarmouth the target if the family likes its beaches with a side order of zoo, aquarium, model village, pleasure pier and casino.

History hounds will be well-served hereabouts. The market town of Hingham is 15 minutes from the site and is chock-full of stunning Georgian piles to gaze upon, and the spectacular moated Oxburgh Hall is half an hour away. Prefer to be nosing around in the much more distant past? The Neolithic flint mine Grime’s Graves is well worth a pitstop.

Anyone needing a day of shopping and culture should get in the car for the 50-minute drive to Norwich city centre to explore England’s biggest six-day indoor market and check some of the Norwich 12 (the city’s most iconic buildings) off the list.
