Camping in the orchard

General

  • Scenic orchard site on a Norfolk farm
  • Half an hour from Thetford Forest and 50 minutes from Norwich
  • Craft courses and farm shop selling honey, bread and veg

In need of a peaceful getaway that lets you unwind while still keeping your hands busy? Crafty guests should thread their way along to Brakehill Lodge Farm, a family-friendly orchard site on a Norfolk farm half an hour’s drive from Thetford.

With a whole farm to explore, there are scenic walks to take and lengthy bike rides to make, and the peace and quiet to sit down and finally finish that book that’s been taking up space on the nightstand… If switching off completely doesn’t quite fit the bill, never fear: the site regularly runs a whole host of craft courses, from soap and candle making to beekeeping (just remember to check course dates before travelling if something specific is desired).

The site’s also within half an hour of Thetford Forest, putting guests within easy reach of lots of walks, mountain biking trails and the long-distance Peddars Way. That sounds like hungry work so luckily, there’s a small shop in the on-site farmhouse where honey, homemade bread and homegrown veg can be picked up.

    Disliked:

Late night planes as is near a flight path, brought ear plugs anyway.

From the manager...

Dear Illana,
thanks for the review. There is an army base the other side of Watton and I think they may be carrying out night time activities this week. Only happens a few times a year, sorry it may have disturbed you.

Peaceful site with great facilities. The games room was a lovely bonus. Our five year old loved seeing the bats and a couple of toads. I loved walking into the bell tent and being greeted with the smell of fresh lavender which had been laid out.

Everything this camp site suited us totally. It's quite and total relaxation. We were made to feel very welcome, at the home of clare and family. On the family farm the campsite is rustic and organic but it works, the setting is as rural as you'd get very beautiful. No frills, no clubhouses, no play areas no being on top of each other.. Will definitely be going back.. Thankyou Clare for a wonderful stay Jo and family

Secluded countryside spot with friendly, helpful hosts.07/25/2020

Secluded pitch - no other tents in the same area. Really friendly host - even let our daughter walk their dog which she loved! Spacious bell tent for our family of 3 (2 adults and an 8 year old) which was nicely furnished. This is a new venture for the owner which I’m sure will do really well.

    Disliked:

Only one small sink for hand washing and brushing teeth etc outside the 2 toilet cubicles. Could get awkward if someone needs the loo while you’re brushing your teeth! There was only one other family camping while we were there so this may be more of a problem with full capacity.

Excellent small, secluded site with clean facilities and large pitches09/09/2019

This was a lovely, small, peaceful site with just 6 pitches. The pitches were a really good size - enough for a large tent, car and space to sit outside. The field is surrounded by tall trees adding to the secluded feel but you can still make out lovely views across fields and amazing sunsets.
The amenities were good - clean toilets and hot shower. As there is only one shower this may be an issue in busy periods but we had no issues when we stayed (3 pitchdes in use). There was also a pool table, sofa area and lots of information leaflets on nearby areas.
Great central location for exploring the surroundings - we went to the heart of thetford forest for a walk (40 mins away) and some lovely local villages and towns. Watton is a 10 min drive with places to eat, takeaway and shops.
    We would stay again!

Local attractions

Attention all fishing fans angling for a real catch of a getaway: will proximity to the well-stocked and spectacularly scenic Loch Neaton fishing lake (a mere 10-minute drive from base) prove to be enough of a lure? Pull up a slice of bank and cast a line to try and land carp, bream, perch, roach, rudd, tench or pike in a lucky catch.

Not everyone’s a fan of quiet afternoons with rod and reel, of course. Not to worry, there are plenty more fish in the sea... The Norfolk coast is about an hour’s drive away – head to Holkham beach for swimming and sandy strolls, or make Great Yarmouth the target if the family likes its beaches with a side order of zoo, aquarium, model village, pleasure pier and casino.

History hounds will be well-served hereabouts. The market town of Hingham is 15 minutes from the site and is chock-full of stunning Georgian piles to gaze upon, and the spectacular moated Oxburgh Hall is half an hour away. Prefer to be nosing around in the much more distant past? The Neolithic flint mine Grime’s Graves is well worth a pitstop.

Anyone needing a day of shopping and culture should get in the car for the 50-minute drive to Norwich city centre to explore England’s biggest six-day indoor market and check some of the Norwich 12 (the city’s most iconic buildings) off the list.

Must see

  • Castle Acre Castle (17.3 kilometres)
  • Grimes Graves (18.6 kilometres)
  • Banham Zoo (19.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Oxburgh Hall (20.6 kilometres)
  • Blickling Hall, Gardens and Park (33.4 kilometres)
