Camping doesn’t come much more regal than at The Sandringham Estate Experience Freedom Glamping, 15 minutes’ drive from King’s Lynn in Norfolk. Re-opened in 2025 after extensive renovation, it’s set on the royal estate and offers stylish accommodation in large and luxurious safari tents, each sleeping up to eight guests. Facilities on site include a playground, designated dog area and a communal firepit, with handy conveniences like a family washroom, washing-up sinks and laundry room. Better still, you’ll have free access to the Royal Park, its walking trails, an adventure playground and the Visitor Centre with a tearoom, gift shop and flower stall. Sandringham House and its gardens are open from April to mid-October (closed on selected dates in July and for the Heritage Live concerts in August). A mobile fish and chip van visits the site from time to time; staff members will have all the details for you. Otherwise, the historic harbour town of King’s Lynn (you can get there on the bus) has a buzzing Tuesday food market where you can pick up bits for a barbecue, plus lots of pubs, cafés and restaurants if you’re not going down the self-catering line.

3 bedroom safari tent (deluxe)

Liked Accommodation was very clean, well equipped and spacious. Lovely surroundings and well kept amenities, roads and lodges. Had a nice small Play area for kids. The use of food trucks was a great idea, and it felt safe for kids to roam.

Disliked Only criticism and very small was that the sofas weren’t very comfy and the cushions slid off if you slouched a bit.

Local attractions

First stop will no doubt be Sandringham House (10 minutes’ walk), the private country retreat of the King and Queen. You can tour some of the opulent rooms stuffed with priceless artwork and antiques, and stroll the stunning formal plantings as well as the North End cottage-style garden designed by Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1947. Other great houses to visit locally include National Trust-owned Oxborough Hall (35 minutes’ drive), built in pink stone in the 15th century and surrounded by a moat, or elegant Houghton Hall and Gardens (20 minutes), where you can tour the OTT interior and see contemporary sculpture scattered around the grounds. Pretty places to discover include King’s Lynn (15 minutes), a former Hanseatic trading town with a historic port, imposing minster and Georgian townhouses. For a day on the Norfolk coast, Hunstanton (15 minutes) has sandy beaches, fun fairs, a Ferris wheel and Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary, where you can watch seals play in their pools and get up close to reptiles.
