General

  • Spacious 12-acre family campsite in rural Norfolk
  • Two miles from Mundesley beach; North Walsham 10 minutes' drive
  • Kids' play area, indoor seating and pop-up bar

Rock up for a roomy rural site that’s two miles from the north Norfolk coast… MADRA is a green and grassy spot that’s far from busy roads and big cities – in all, you'll have 12 acres to pitch up and explore in, plus lots of adjacent country footpaths and bike rides a short distance from base to get to hiking or pedalling as you please.

The vibe here is laidback, relaxed and family-friendly – the kids have a playground where they can run around and blow off some steam, while a clubhouse and pop-up bar is on hand for drinks or for those of you who are looking for somewhere to chill away from the elements. Barbecues are welcome too, and there are plenty of picnic tables around the place to get set up, so it shouldn't be a bother to find somewhere to eat alfresco as a group.

So, where is this spot? Well, MADRA is in a small village called Knapton, and from there, it’s easy to catch regular bus services to local seaside towns like Mundesley (two miles) and Cromer (nine miles). You're also very close to the pretty market town of North Walsham (roughly 10 minutes' drive), where’s a train station, pubs, restaurants, fish and chip shops, a public swimming pool and a bowling alley.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Please note that the shower facilities are unisex.

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Peaceful stay in a rural setting that was only 2miles from the coast. Facilities were clean and adequate. The site warden Tim and the site manager welcoming and friendly. There was a bar on site although it was only open two nights a week we were made aware of this and is open most nights in peak season. We have been to this site before and will be returning as we thoroughly enjoyed it.

WOW What a wonderful site. From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome, The site warden showed us to our pitch witch was along a lovely tree lined area. The facilities were excellent with nice clean hot showers, What a nice bonus was the on-site clubhouse that had food and drink at very cheap prices, we met a lot of fellow campers in there and had a great time. Our dog Spot also loved it here especially the walks we took him on just adjacent to the site.lots to do in the area and within walking distance. The staff were fantastic, so a big thanks to Graham, Ceri, Ellie, Dave, and Tim. We will definitely be back as will the other campers we spoke to on site at the time. Finally I find it so nice to go to a site that does give you value for money from the pitch prices to the bar. Well done MADRA 👍👍👍👍

In the men’s toilet, although it was clean, it was scruffy and very tired. The inside of the toilet door is full of holes where people have bashed it with their football boots. There is no plug in the sink so is not possible to wash in there.

I can’t comment on the clubhouse as it didn’t open once in the whole week we were there. This was also very disappointing as there is no pub within walking distance and we had planned to eat and have a drink there.

You park your car behind the long grass behind your caravan. There is an instruction in the rules when you first arrive that all greywater must be poured into the long grass behind your caravan. Which means every time you go to your car you’re walking several years’ worth of greywater waste. I actually saw bits of carrots and rice in the grass as I was walking through.

Although it says dogs are welcome I feel the correct phrase would more be tolerated. There is nowhere to let your dog off the lead at all and as we have a border collie who needs to run off energy this was no use to a us at all. On one occasion I spent two or three minutes throwing a frisbee for the dog. He didn’t run anywhere else just court it came straight back to me. When we returned that night there was a traffic cone with a large sign saying keep your dog on a lead planted in front of the caravan. And the manager came around and explain to us in no uncertain terms the rules.

From the manager...

We have showers to use to wash not sinks as plugs get left in and sink overflows and people seem to like are plugs for souvenirs unfortunately anglia water are putting main sewerage in so water was turned off. The clubhouse was open as you didn’t use any of the facilities

The people we met were lovely.
It was a quiet location. The Village of Knapton is lovely but no shop/pub etc…
Mundesley, the next village along was nice.

    Disliked:

The site simply wasn’t for us and not quite what I was expecting from the description
although if something seems cheap, there’s always a reason! Lesson learnt! We picked this site for what looked like a woodland environment from the photos… 👀
The site was basically the local footy pitch, the Shower facilities were actually the footy changing room with 3 showers in a row (not separated!) Saying that they were clean just super basic. £1 for 4 mins which is ample time and we didn’t mind paying… I just couldn’t imagine being here in the summer with limited shower/toilet facilities.
The walk to Mundesley is a bit of a trek, and precarious in places.

From the manager...

Sorry this site wasn’t for you yes the price is cheap but our facilities are basic and clean we manage in the summer as we have more showers to open if you had read your welcome pack and reviews it explains we are a charity raising money for children’s football so that explains the football pitches there are so many woodland and country walks around our site shame you never mentioned your concerns to Tim or myself it’s very disheartening to get a 2 for a review as we all volunteer to keep our little site running hope you find somewhere more suitable in the future

Everything!! Wow 2nd visit this year! Beautiful site, well maintained, lovely clean toilets and shower facilities. Ceri, Graham and Tim are a real asset to the team especially as they work as volunteers, made you feel like old friends!! Very friendly and accommodating, we were given jelly beans! Free. We enjoyed ourselves that much we stayed a couple extra nights. The site is so peaceful, you could be a million miles away and yet its central to visit places. I would thoroughly recommend to everyone.

Local attractions

You might not be able to get back to the real Victorian seaside, but Mundesley (five minutes’ drive) was popular with the public back then, and it’s easy to tell why when you visit its paddle-worthy beach and pretty village. Cromer (20 minutes) is another of those sweet seaside spots – get your hands on the crab specialities, catch a show in the pavilion on the pier or go for a snorkel from the shore.

Those of you who want to source some more tasty eats will surely find some in the market town of North Walsham (10 minutes) or Norwich city centre (35 minutes). But to embark on more water-based activities, there are the Norfolk Broads inland, and Wroxham (25 minutes) will be your closest spot to hire out a boat and make some headway.

Grab a bicycle instead over on the Blickling Estate (25 minutes). It’s an easy pedal past the hall and the parkland’s lake, grandstand and other little features. Holkham Hall (an hour) has both bicycle and boat hire too, as well as high ropes for those of you who want to take on some new heights, literally. For more of the treetops, playtime at BeWILDerwood Norfolk (25 minutes) will be in a treehouse-themed playground.
