MADRA: Picnic area and playground

General

  • Spacious 12-acre family campsite in rural Norfolk
  • Two miles from Mundesley beach; North Walsham 10 minutes' drive
  • Kids' play area, indoor seating and pop-up bar

Rock up for a roomy rural site that’s two miles from the north Norfolk coast… MADRA is a green and grassy spot that’s far from busy roads and big cities – in all, you'll have 12 acres to pitch up and explore in, plus lots of adjacent country footpaths and bike rides a short distance from base to get to hiking or pedalling as you please.

The vibe here is laidback, relaxed and family-friendly – the kids have a playground where they can run around and blow off some steam, while a clubhouse and pop-up bar is on hand for drinks or for those of you who are looking for somewhere to chill away from the elements. Barbecues are welcome too, and there are plenty of picnic tables around the place to get set up, so it shouldn't be a bother to find somewhere to eat alfresco as a group.

So, where is this spot? Well, MADRA is in a small village called Knapton, and from there, it’s easy to catch regular bus services to local seaside towns like Mundesley (two miles) and Cromer (nine miles). You're also very close to the pretty market town of North Walsham (roughly 10 minutes' drive), where’s a train station, pubs, restaurants, fish and chip shops, a public swimming pool and a bowling alley.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Great welcome, pretty flat site and very quiet. Plenty of space so your not on top of each other like some sites. Basic amenities but enough for a base camp to explore the area, which is beautiful. Any problems sorted out by Tim who was very helpful.
Advise visiting horsey wind pump for lovely boat trip and horsey gap for seals.

We enjoyed our stay and would stay again, however we had some new arrivals on our last night and they had three dogs that were off lead. I asked if he was going to put them on the lead and his reply was “yes when finished playing”! They were off lead most of the time and it was also worrying for some other guests with small children who was the other side of them as one dog kept going over, we were told they were regulars! Two of there children were kicking a football about and it hit our caravan twice! This ruined our last night. To say they were regulars they were very disrespectful of other guests and just did as they pleased and were very unwelcoming and rude, hopefully they won’t be there the next time we are 😊

    Disliked:

Nothing really apart from the family that arrived on our last night but we did like the site and the area, we mainly used our own facilities so wasn’t a problem for us!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review I’m upset to think that 3 dogs were on camp as we only allow 2 plus they have to be on leads at all times if I had have seen them then of course I would have had a word and explain our rules as for the football I did ask them to play on our bottom field which they did no problem I wish you would have seenTim or myself and we could have resolved this as for being there next time they definitely are not local as they have never been here before

Nice flat site in an ideal location. Easy to access and very friendly, helpful reception. Quiet site even when the footy was on.
    Reasonable price.

    Disliked:

This site is ideal for motorhomes or caravans with own facilities and we enjoyed our short stay, however these are just a few things that would make camping life better...
Pot washing up facilities need hot water supply.
Shower was lovely and hot and as they are situated in the football changing rooms, plenty of space and hooks. However, only one out of 3 showers working so even though you could go in as a family you still had to wait in turn for the shower.
The toilets only had one sink and no hooks for toilet bags etc while washing. No electric/razor points and although the ladies didnt have paper towels they had a hand dryer, the mens had nothing for hand drying the whole time we were there.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review most people in Motorhome’s and caravans use their own washing up facilities ours were put in mostly for the campers who seem to be happy with the situation I’m afraid if we added everything you would like on our little site it wouldn’t be £13 a night more like £20 we like to keep it cheap and basic so everybody can come and have a lovely break

The site was very easy to locate. On arrival we were greeted by Graham who directed us to Tim who was organising us :)
Tim was very friendly and welcoming. He showed us where our pitch was. The pitch has short grass, no mud, and was pretty level.
He told us where the toilets and showers were and also the bar and clubhouse. He also explained where the nearest supermarkets were, where the best chippy is and other things in the local area.
The campsite is located on a pair of football pitches. For the most part it was really quiet and the birdsong was marvellous. I have no interest whatsoever in football but the few games held on the football pitch next to the camping field were no problem at all. Some folks walked through the campsite to the football field, they played football, there was some cheering, but very little noise at all. In fact it is refreshing to see young people getting out there for some good healthy sport.
I didn't use the facilities provided but my partner did. He said they were clean and no problems with them at all. There was only once where he had to wait to use the shower, he didn't mind waiting.
The only problem we had was our electric water heater tripping the main electrics, it took us a little while to suss out that it was us tripping it, Tim was very helpful in tracing the problem even though it may have been a little frustrating to him (sorry).
All in all we had a good stay at Madra, we saw lots of lovely local beaches and wildlife. Thanks.

Local attractions

You might not be able to get back to the real Victorian seaside, but Mundesley (five minutes’ drive) was popular with the public back then, and it’s easy to tell why when you visit its paddle-worthy beach and pretty village. Cromer (20 minutes) is another of those sweet seaside spots – get your hands on the crab specialities, catch a show in the pavilion on the pier or go for a snorkel from the shore.

Those of you who want to source some more tasty eats will surely find some in the market town of North Walsham (10 minutes) or Norwich city centre (35 minutes). But to embark on more water-based activities, there are the Norfolk Broads inland, and Wroxham (25 minutes) will be your closest spot to hire out a boat and make some headway.

Grab a bicycle instead over on the Blickling Estate (25 minutes). It’s an easy pedal past the hall and the parkland’s lake, grandstand and other little features. Holkham Hall (an hour) has both bicycle and boat hire too, as well as high ropes for those of you who want to take on some new heights, literally. For more of the treetops, playtime at BeWILDerwood Norfolk (25 minutes) will be in a treehouse-themed playground.
