General

  • Peaceful adults-only site next to a racehorse training farm
  • Two fishing lakes with carp, tench, roach, rudd and bream
  • A 10-minute stroll to Higham with shops and a dog-friendly inn

Hoot. And (fishing) hook. Big folk, come and join the owls, hawks, red kites, muntjac deer and other local inhabitants round and about adults-only Rectory Farm Fishing and Camping Site in Norfolk. You can add a hoof to that too: the site is next to the racehorse training yard College Farm and guests can regularly see its residents trotting through the site back and forth from their morning trot.

Bring your rod and licence to tackle the slippery specimens at Rectory Farm’s two fishing lakes, mostly carp and tench, but smaller shoals of roach, rudd and bream to try your hand at too. Fishing costs £5/£4 concession for the full day.

The lakes are as well maintained as the site facilities, where guests have access to toilets, showers, taps with drinking water, a fridge freezer, sinks with hot water all day and night, waste disposal point and picnic benches to take in the views. Dogs are welcome and have special areas on site for energetic walks.

From Rectory Farm, it’s a safe 10-minute stroll to Hingham, with the Good Pub Guide’s dog-friendly White Hart inn, shops, bakers and butcher to pick up sausages and other essentials for the evening campfire. Hooray!

Chose this site as it was adult only. My husband and friends wanted a quiet time to catch up and enjoy. It certainly was quiet and the added bonus of having an open fire was brilliant. the facilities were adequate and clean.

    Disliked:

Would have liked more than one shower in the block.

The rural location with fire pits for most of the tent pitches. There was plenty of fishing although we weren't there to fish. Lots of dog walks around the area if you bring a dog with you.

    Disliked:

Toilet block was too far away from the tent pitches. The wifi was touch and go in the tent area, more off than on. No information available about the local area.

We stayed on a quiet week and it was so peaceful and a lovely environment with the open spaces, trees and ponds. We don't fish but that wasn't a problem. There were camping areas that had a wild-camping feel to them too. As it was quiet we used a hook-up pitch next to a pond which was lovely. The ground was level and gravel-free.The facilities were basic - toilets, shower, kitchen facilities but clean and accessible. The owners were very friendly and nothing too much trouble. The nearby village of Hingham is walking distance and has various useful shops. We will definitely stay again as we loved it!

Peaceful site. Friendly people who were also camping / caravaning there. I am not a fisher, but both the ponds looked lovely, and I saw plenty of fish! The toilets were always clean and I was very impressed with the nice shower. The surrounding area is really nice. We visited Hingham village and watched a local cricket match, attending an antiques fair and walked around the wonderful St.Andrews church.

    Disliked:

The length of time you get in the shower is just not enough! When we arrived we didn't know where to put our tent. We tried calling but no answer. The next morning having decided to just pitch in a suitable place we then noticed the office door with a doorbell. If there was a clearer sign perhaps we would have seen this and wouldn't have been eating our dinner in the dark having walked around to find someone.

Local attractions

Once you’ve put down the fishing rod, head to Hingham with the camera first to snap some shots of very fashionable houses: Hingham’s popularity with posh Georgians who came here in the eighteenth century led to the town being labelled ‘Little London’. The eastern side of the market place is said to have the best collection of Georgian houses in Norfolk, perfect for pics and a possible rant about 21st-century property prices (buy a motorhome instead).

From Hingham, it’s about 17 miles east to Norwich, Norfolk’s capital town and filled with a capital amount of attractions such as England’s biggest six-day indoor market, the greatly-sized Gothic fountain at the Plantation Garden and the ‘Norwich 12’, 12 listed buildings in the city including stupendous Norwich Cathedral.

See a few of the other Norwich 12 buildings while you’re here: we recommend the eleventh century Norwich Castle, with the biggest castle motte in the country; the Great Hospital, looking after Norwich residents since medieval times; The Halls, the most complete medieval friary in England, and the Edwardian Surrey House with its skeleton clock.

Keep driving your way east to reach the Norfolk Broads – you did remember to put your fishing rod in the car boot...? The Broads and their 125 miles of navigable waterways are where to go in Norfolk for all things boat, whether you want to try a guided river trip to wildlife spot, hire a boat to drift lazily down the water or take out a canoe for placid paddling. If by now you’re champing at the bit to fish, the Broads have several good lakes to pick from, or try sea fishing off the beach from Sea Palling around to the coast at Great Yarmouth.

45 minutes’ drive from Rectory Farm will bring you to the gorgeous beaches of the north Norfolk coast and the 45 miles of the North Norfolk Coastal Path, going from Hunstanton to Cromer via Wells and Blakeney in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Prefer to hit the seaside? Great Yarmouth is the gateway from the Broads to the North Sea and provides piles of pleasure in its Golden Mile, racecourse, award-winning Time and Tide Museum, and world-famous chips; stop off at the Tourist Information Centre on the seafront to pick up info on what to see.
