The pub (added by manager 12 Sep 2022)
Great times, make lasting memories.
Nice relaxing friendly site
Simple site

  • Pitches behind a traditional country pub in the Waveney Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from canoe hire on the river Waveney and two museums
  • Traditional pub grub menu and playground; close to the Angles Way
Pub grub, canoeing on the river Waveney and waterside wanders might very well make up some of your stay at The Red Lion in the Waveney Valley. With dog-friendly and family-friendly pitches in the grounds of a traditional country pub (where dogs are permitted in the outside area only), this site is not just for the foodies, although it certainly scores highly on that front thanks to its classic menu of pub grub. The site is 10 minutes’ drive away from a couple of museums (aviation and World War II included) and canoe hire for the river Waveney, which runs through the valley. In fact, the site is just 10 minutes’ stroll away from the riverbank, where you can walk right onto the Angles Way, a 93-mile trail along the riverside. On site, there’s an amenities block with a toilet, shower room and an outside washing-up area handy that's handy for dealing with barbecue aftermath. There’s a playground here where kids can run off any excess energy, perhaps while you supervise from over a pint in the pub’s outdoor seating. For snacks and that sort of thing, Harleston’s selection of supermarkets is five minutes’ drive away from the site. Handily, there’s a local bus route that runs past the outside of the pub, so it should be easy enough to get around the surrounding area. Please note the pub's opening hours: it is closed on Mondays, open between 12pm and 3pm on Tuesday through to Sunday and open in evenings from 5.30pm to 8pm for food (and until 10pm for drinks) on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Liked: Lovely campsite

Disliked: Went to have a meal in the pub got in was told by some old women who was doing the bookings that we would have to wait while she tried to find us a table which was fine went to sit at a table while she was doing this only to be shouted at (You can't sit there I just told you) bearing in mind we were the only people in the pub so we stood at the bar while she huffed and puffed eventually got a table giving the early bird menu which was rubbish so went back and had something to eat in our campervan , If this woman whoever she is is front of house she needs replacing

From the manager: So where to start!!!! The pub was empty when you arrived but we had 52 people booked that night for our “rubbish” early bird menu!!!!! Fish and chips plus a drink for £12. Which runs from 5.30pm till 7pm then we go on to the full menu from 7pm till 8pm You were asked to wait while we found a space for you to be squeezed in as you hadn’t booked and didn’t ask to book when you arrived!!!… you then sat down at a table that wasn’t available so you were asked to move to a table that was available!!!… then you proceeded to huff and puff because the menu wasn’t up to “your” standards and you left!!!…… if you would like to put a review about the pub please do so on the pubs review page…. Please remember that this is the campsites review page and has nothing to do with the pub Also can I make a suggestion that on your future bookings that you do a bit of research about where you’re staying and what is available at the time of your stay Kind regards Mike

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: A very quiet small campsite with very level gravel pitches. 16amp EHU and excellent site wide 2.4/5.0 Ghz wifi. Small toilet, shower and washing up building with loads of hot water and all cleaned. Staff were friendly and helpful as is attached to a lovey pub serving good ale and excellent food. Sunday roast lunch was huge! Good walks for the dogs around the River Waveney. There is a small but very well equipped fenced of children's playground. Enjoyed our stay and will be back.

Disliked: Nothing to report

From the manager: Well I knew this review was coming!!!! Where to start!!! You left a message on the pub answer phone to book a table for Saturday night. Unfortunately you didn’t leave a name and you didn’t leave a number!!! When you arrived I had been asking all guest if they had left a message to book a table. I asked you and you said yes!!! I apologised that I’d not called you back but you’d not left a name nor a phone number!!!! You were outraged that I’d not gone through all the bookings for that weekend (11) and called them all to “check” unfortunately as it was a bank holiday weekend and we were fully booked on Saturday evening (82) you couldn’t get a table and waved your arms around like a wild man!!!!! So unfortunately this complaint came about because of your frustration because sadly you’d made a mistake in not leaving a contact number or name when calling. I don’t think I really need to address any of your other complaints as I believe you’re just trying to cause a problem out of frustration. If you’re reading this reply and would like to book a table please remember if it goes to answer phone please leave your name and a contact number Kind regards Mike

Liked: Near a pub...nice walks. Toilet block ok. Pub had nice food and v good beer.

Disliked: A rather tatty small campsite in need of a bit of TLC. Hardstanding was rough and uneven. Some run down caravans on site not being used.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Out of over 200 reviews no one has ever mentioned that the hard standing is rough and uneven!!!! All pitches are flat and level so again not really sure what you’re going on about!!! Unless of course you decided to roll around on them!!!! ALL Caravans that were on-site during your stay were being used. Considering you only stayed “one” night unsure how you would come to this conclusion?!?!!

Would definitely return

Local attractions

Activities on the river Waveney might have already given you a taste for the water… and if that’s the case, you can’t go far wrong with a beach day. While the valley scenery might suggest otherwise, the coast is within driving distance and that includes Southwold beach (45 minutes' drive), a sandy stretch with an amusement arcade on the pier and good windsurfing conditions, and Aldeburgh beach (55 minutes), known for its tasty fish and chips. Those of you who have kids fond of animals, Banham Zoo (half an hour) might be one afternoon out to add to the itinerary, while Camel Park Oasis (15 minutes) is another with camels in the limelight. And for a place with play areas and farm animals, Easton Farm Park (35 minutes) is your guy. To switch things up with a history-geared visit, you’ll have your pick of a few places, including the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum (10 minutes), The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (10 minutes) for historical accounts of American involvement in World War II and Bressingham Steam & Gardens (25 minutes) for a steam museum and gardens… or steam train trip of your own aboard one of the trains that are in action.
