General

  • Secluded setting in a carefully managed wildlife haven
  • Bushcraft classes in fire lighting, shelter building and more
  • Communal firepit area and bacon/sausages for sale

Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with accommodation in a green countryside setting within a two-acre garden.

You'll spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: like the local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares.

The site also has its own herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and a ‘pig cam’ for guests to spy what goes on, as well as cameras tuned to the site TV service showing the bird table and nest boxes placed around the garden.

Not quite undercover enough for you? Take one of the site’s bushcraft and survival classes to pick up skills in fire lighting, shelter building and other crafty activities; show off your skills later in the communal firepit area by cooking up some locally provided bacon and sausages for sale in the site shop.

Other little touches at The Secret Garden include regular sausage and beer tasting sessions, an onsite microbrewery, a games room and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide in. All guests have access to the modern shower and toilet block with three washrooms and the kitchen with laundry facilities.

The camp staff were lovely. Neil was very informative of things to do and see in and around Wisbech. He even rides his bike and leads you to your pitch. The site was lovely and clean showers great and even had portaloos scattered around for more convenience these were also clean and well stocked.

Great little shop and on site facilities. Having an off lead dog run is a great idea! Haven't seen this before and more sites should take up this idea. The staff are very helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Would stay there again for sure.

    Disliked:

Due to the shower and toilet facilities being in the same room, it meant that when people were showering, a cue formed to use the toilets!

Upon arrival to our pitch, we was met with gravel on a grass pitch ! Which worries us and ended up in us having to put extra layers down due to our 8 month old crawling and was awful and painful to walk on let alone crawl on. While setting up we had the pitch next to us and their dogs coming through the bushes and barking at us. (Dogs are meant to be kept on leads all times) first night was okish the pitch next to us was rowdy til late, so ok we let them have that one, but the next night was awful through the day you didn't hear a thing apart from there dogs. Come evening a different matter. There was music playing swearing, loud talking and shouting, the lady shouting she wanted another beer pass me another beer and this went on and on and on til I had to get up and ring the number your given. They came out told them to be quiet they ignored this advice and at 1:30 in the morning they was still going 😡 And I was worried they would wake the baby up to be met with SHHHH SHHH YOU WILL WAKE THE BABY. That baby best not wake us up at 7:30 in morning. To which I had to get back up and go and tell them they was still making to much noise singing and being a nuisance and they was in actual fact waking up my baby and children !!! In the morning we went over to the office to follow up this complaint off the dogs coming on to our pitch and the noise the last two nights to be met with only thing we can do it block there postcode after we pointed out there was groups off them that was on pitch next to them and further down the field. To be told nothing can do but we can move to a non electric pitch !!! Which left us really upset and annoyed that we was offered to move something we didn't want or pay for. Fast forward to the morning we was then met with kids out on bikes up and down at 6:30 in the morning waking everyone up.

Toilets are ok but wasn't cleaned nearly enough for amount off people using them. Can't say I'm a fan off looking at other people's bodily hair around the toilet seat and was concerned at the prongs sticking out the walls and not removed where Mirrors use to sit that had by end of our stay someone had bent off the wall. The showers ok but again left In muddy state.

I feel overall we was really let down and the issues wasn't dealt with appropriately at all and this isn't the first time I've heard of it either

    Everything!
It was a fab place to stay with the children, it was small and safe enough to let my older 2 out to play by themselves.
My 21 month old loved the freedom too and loved going to see the hens and the pigs.
The pod was roomy and clean and perfect for the 4 of us.

Beautiful site, kept really tidy and SO much space between tents plus areas with no pitches for playing games - we could play frisbee without any worry of how bad the kids aim was!
Even though the site was pretty full, and with really wet weather one day, the shower block was kept clean and always had loo paper available (a big plus compares with some sites)
The owners are really friendly and the sausage and beer/cider tasting on Sat afternoon was a lovely way to meet them and learn who was who.
Many thanks for a great stay

Absolutely brilliant site. We were only there the one night but wished we were staying longer. Sizes of pitches were great and they were all individual with hedges or trees around them. Toilet and shower block were very clean also.

Very friendly staff at check in and the shop seemed well stocked. Although we weren't needing anything for the one night.

We will definitely be booking to come back here again as the setting of it was just perfect.

Local attractions

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles from The Secret Garden Touring Park and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to start off at (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999).

Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from World War I up to the conflicts of the Falklands and Iraq.

The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Prefer to gently soak your troubles away? Bubble away at the local Hudson Leisure Centre’s swimming pool, steam room and sauna.

Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15–20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; the RSPB reserve has free entry, a visitor centre and ten viewing hides, and the WWT at Welney has guided walks and nocturnal viewings among its regular activities. Or take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore.

Flowers, sausages and local produce at spiffing farmers’ markets can be picked up at Spalding, to the north-west of The Secret Garden and with many a nursery and plant centre nearby, water taxis along the river and shopping at Springfields and the Festival Gardens.

Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.
