General

  • Secluded setting in a carefully managed wildlife haven
  • Bushcraft classes in fire lighting, shelter building and more
  • Communal firepit area and bacon/sausages for sale

Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with accommodation in a green countryside setting within a two-acre garden.

You'll spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: like the local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares.

The site also has its own herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and a ‘pig cam’ for guests to spy what goes on, as well as cameras tuned to the site TV service showing the bird table and nest boxes placed around the garden.

Not quite undercover enough for you? Take one of the site’s bushcraft and survival classes to pick up skills in fire lighting, shelter building and other crafty activities; show off your skills later in the communal firepit area by cooking up some locally provided bacon and sausages for sale in the site shop.

Other little touches at The Secret Garden include regular sausage and beer tasting sessions, an onsite microbrewery, a games room and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide in. All guests have access to the modern shower and toilet block with three washrooms and the kitchen with laundry facilities.

Hedges and trees around pitches gave everyone privacy. Having a huge fire pit was excellent and wood was good value at £4.
Sausage and beer tasting was fantastic and everyone was so friendly. The shop sold the essential marshmallows as well as great chutney and jam.

    Disliked:

A few more pegs would have been handy in showers as when showering with young kids we were little short of hanging space.

Lovely, quiet site surrounded by trees & shrubs of various types, reception staff were very helpful,toilets/washing facilities were the best I remember ever seeing on a campsite-large individual rooms in a pre-fabricated cabin with plenty of hot water and heated floors! (yes really!).
Grass areas were a bit muddy where churned up by vans/cars, (september) but gravel had been laid down on every pitch.
A fire pit was provided for every pitch, & a big bag of logs could be purchased from the small camp shop which proved very popular in the evenings.
A very friendly site that we will be sure to visit again.

Great little shop and on site facilities. Having an off lead dog run is a great idea! Haven't seen this before and more sites should take up this idea. The staff are very helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Would stay there again for sure.

    Disliked:

Due to the shower and toilet facilities being in the same room, it meant that when people were showering, a cue formed to use the toilets!

Local attractions

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles from The Secret Garden Touring Park and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to start off at (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999).

Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from World War I up to the conflicts of the Falklands and Iraq.

The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Prefer to gently soak your troubles away? Bubble away at the local Hudson Leisure Centre’s swimming pool, steam room and sauna.

Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15–20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; the RSPB reserve has free entry, a visitor centre and ten viewing hides, and the WWT at Welney has guided walks and nocturnal viewings among its regular activities. Or take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore.

Flowers, sausages and local produce at spiffing farmers’ markets can be picked up at Spalding, to the north-west of The Secret Garden and with many a nursery and plant centre nearby, water taxis along the river and shopping at Springfields and the Festival Gardens.

Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.

Must see

  • Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (14.6 miles)

  • Ely Cathedral (18.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Peckover House and Garden (1.4 miles)
