The Secret Garden Touring Park: Hobbit Hill picnic area

General

  • Secluded setting in a carefully managed wildlife haven
  • Bushcraft classes in fire lighting, shelter building and more
  • Communal firepit area and bacon/sausages for sale

Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with accommodation in a green countryside setting within a two-acre garden.

You'll spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: much like the local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares. The site also has its own herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and a flock of cheery chickens.

Not quite undercover enough for you? Take one of the site’s bushcraft and survival classes to pick up skills in fire lighting, shelter building and other crafty activities; show off your skills later in the communal firepit area by cooking up some of the locally made bacon and sausages for sale in the site shop.

Other little touches at The Secret Garden include regular sausage and beer tasting sessions, an on-site distillery, a games room and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide out in. All guests have access to two modern shower and toilet blocks, and the kitchen with laundry facilities.

The site was beautiful with all the autumn foliage. Brilliant shop on site with reasonable prices and local produce. Lovely bar on site and very friendly staff working there. Pitches were quite private. Looked magical lit up at night time.

    Disliked:

Pitch got quite waterlogged in heavy rain. Communal area could have been a bit more inviting.

Fantastic campsite, very well laid out with great privacy. My children loved visiting the pigs and having a camp fire with roasted marshmallows. Lovely shop and bar onsite will definitely be staying again and will definitely recommend it.

    Disliked:

Campsite and surrounding area was really lovely. Wisbech itself as a town center is a bit run down (lots of closed shops) so wouldn't really recommend a visit but this is obviously no reflection on the campsite.

Everything. Lovely quiet site with large pitches. Great pub on site and events area where live bands are on at the weekends. Toilet & shower facilities are very good with digital showers. Pitches have electric and water facilities on. There is a maze to walk around and a shared area with a campfire area. There is nothing not to like about this site it's simply lovely.

The site pitch we stayed in was sectioned off almost which was perfect - covered from the wind and we had our own privacy. The fire pit was great and the little bar area and outdoor beer garden were lovely. The piglets on site just absolutely topped it off.

Local attractions

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles away and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to view (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999).

Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from across the ages.

The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15–20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore.

Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.

Must see

  • Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (14.5 miles)
  • Peterborough Cathedral (16.4 miles)
  • Ely Cathedral (18.7 miles)
